The Time Is Near!

San Beda has won off the court. Their prized rookie Pascual will play in the coming NCAA tournament. It was another example of the misdeeds of Philippine Christian University that almost caused a young man his future.
I wonder what my co-writer here at inboundpass.com will say regarding this fiasco that continues to hound PCU. Apparently Pascual was asked to repeat his junior year in high school to be able to play for the PCU Junior squad. But nobody told the player that this was not allowed in the NCAA.
The NCAA Board heard all sides and decided not to punish the unsuspecting player. This was a very noble move by the board.
On the UAAP front, there are countless rumors swirling around about payoffs to release players and other not too flattering moves just to make sure that the rookies are kept on the roster. Of course none of these have been substantiated (yet), but I hear that some quarters are making deliberate moves to uncover these actions.
The most surprising move by the UAAP board was that about a month before opening, they decide to increase the number of players on the roster from 15 to 16. In addition, the age limit was likewise increased from 24 to 25 years old. But then again, nothing surprises me anymore about the UAAP.
Why this sudden change? It just does not sound right to do this so close to the opening of the basketball season. In an interview I recently did with La Salle coach Franz Pumaren, he told me that he was scrambling to find the addition to the roster that he had to fill. He had to hold an open tryout for students since that would be the easiest way to get a player without having to worry about entrance exams, since school has already started.
Can anyone from the UAAP please explain this sudden change in the rules? Who will benefit from this change? Will the addition of 1 player to the roster make that much of a difference?
The increase in age limit is another matter. Is this supposed to accommodate certain individuals or institutions? How can people not be weary of these changes when it happens so close to opening day?
I also heard that there are a number of coaches in the UAAP who are on the bubble with their jobs. Word is that this may be the make or break season for these coaches. A lot of money is spent to maintain a team in the UAAP and nothing less than a championship is expected in return.
The consensus is that there are 6 teams who will compete for the Final Four in this year’s UAAP. Many have said that La Salle, Ateneo and UE are a lock. This means that FEU, UST and Adamson are going to fight it out for the last slot.
Then you have the always unpredictable National University who will give many teams a headache. I am sure Ateneo will attest to this after what they went through at the hands of the Bulldogs in their last regular season game. Maybe this year the Blue Eagles won’t take any team lightly as well as not make premature reservations for out of town trips.
I expect this season to be filled with upsets. Even UP will win a couple of games that will affect the standings.
I hope the UAAP board will not decide games in the in the boardroom. I hope that they do not impede on the responsibilities of the Commissioner. I hope that they follow the rules and not find loopholes to decide on the basis of “it did not affect the outcome of the game.
As part of their centennial celebrations, University of the Philippines is this year’s host and I am hopeful that they have a season that will not be plagued by controversy. Unfortunately these last minute changes they made regarding the roster may be a sign of things to come.
Let the games begin. I am anxious to see if I will be baking a cake again this year.

let me be the first one to post a comment on your article sir.
Like you, I got surprised too that some of the rules suddenly had changed for reasons that we are just yet to find out. In other exchange forums, I just learned as well that players are again allowed to take their masterals then can use this as a ticket to extend their playing eligibility. I would agree with you that UAAP has been like this -inconsistent, though I understand each host is trying their best cleaning up some mess. Let’s just hope for the best but expect for the worst as they say, just fair enough to leave it that way.
Best of luck to UP as this year’s host.
UAAP is just around the corner and I can’t wait to sit in the arena and Yell-out loud with a “Go USTe” cheer. ;)

let’s allow the rules to be changed prior to opening, BUT…
…the UAAP board should explain the reason and rationale behind the change in the rules. not only to the board members, but to the member schools as well and their studentry and the UAAP fans. they fear criticism if they come up with an explanation knowing it’s gonna be just a lot of bull.
they cannot and should not, just go about saying to everyone else, “Oh, we will increase the age limit this year from 24 to 25.”. then come next season, they will say, let’s make it 23.
IF THEY DON’T EXPLAIN THE SUDDEN CHANGE IN THE RULES, THEN THE UAAP IS JUST ANOTHER CIRCUS!

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Salle_Green_Archers#Current_roster,
DLSU has only 14 players in its line up. I’ve also heard rumors that Casio is still injured and won’t be able to play this season. So will DLSU play with a 13 man line up this year?

Casio will definitely play in the upcoming season. He will play ,maybe, after a few games.
I am sure there are many players who will step up while he’s out. Remember, when La Salle played Ateneo in the pre-season tournament, the green archers still won over the blue eagles even without Casio.
In the nike summer league, 2 Lasallians were part of the mythical 5 namely Maierhofer and Barua. I think if Casio was not injured, he will also be PART OF THE MYTHICAL 5.

Grrr!, i don’t really understand where you’re coming from. puro ka lang satsat wala naman substance ang mga posts mo. you always come up with presumptions pero wala naman kang something to back these up. hanggang satsat ka lang.
Casio is a point guard. his role in the team is definitely important. but a point guard’s job is to direct the play. you still have to rely on the others to finish it, that is, score a basket. in the absence of good point guard, a team can still win games by going for fast break plays or a good defense, wherein La Salle is tops.
atkins can shoe-in for casio and so can revilla or lee. of course, casio is a tested point guard and he does his job well.
Your post doesn’t even mention how the others will fair, ano lineup nila, etc.
Ganito ang pag po post kung meron kang opinion na ipinapahiwatig.

The age rule adjustment, in my opinion, is a very suspicious band aid move by the board. At age 25, the player should get a life and move on other than basketball. That’s too old to be in college basketball.

mike, you’re right. anyway, what’s so special about the age 25? why not 26, or 27?
the board must be out of its mind!
at age 25, that means the “average” player has been in college for nine years at the most. assuming he is allowed to play for 5 seasons, by age 24 he has already done that if he started between 18 and 19.

I have to agree with Mike. I never agreed with the 24 yr old limit, and now they even raised it to 25. This supports the trend of getting players from other “lesser known” schools and from the provinces who tend to become “professional” college players — meaning they jump from school to school just to play at the collegiate level for several years. I hate to use the line, but these guys are supposed to be “student-athletes”, student comes first…7 or 8 yrs in college for no other reason than to play hoops? Come on.

UE, ADMU, DLSU, and FEU will make the final four this year.
I believe that UST does not have the capacity or the manpower to make it to the semifinal round. I am sorry to say that UST’s chances of making it to the semifinal round (not only this year but on the years to come) follow a Poisson Distribution that is it will be rare event that UST will make it to the final four not only on this year but on the succeeding seasons/years to come.
Jervy Cruz is the only force that UST has. I think there is a big chance that Mr. Cruz will join the 2008 PBA draft thus making this season as his final year. What do you think will happen to the Tigers if Jervy will join the said PBA draft?
I would also like to clarify that Jvee Casio is not necessarily a point guard. He can be a shooting guard. In my opinion, he is a “Willie Miller” type of a player . This makes him a vital part on the offensive end of the green archers.
Again, UAAP Season 71 Final Four:
UE, ADMU, DLSU, and FEU
UAAP Season 71 Finals:
ADMU vs. DLSU
Do you agree Mr. Atayde?

Mhel_Garrido.
From my understanding, voting would need a tally of 50%+1 to have the rule/policy/decision put into place.
Traditionally, the hosts sits this one out and votes only in cases of ties. So the Magic number here is 4.
For press releases, the board always says unanimous decision for the sake of unity, well in fact, some policies have been implemented or otherwise by a swing vote.

The only sure thing about the UAAP is its unpredictability.
Last year I predicted FEU to create a stir and they almost made it to the Final Four. They played UST for the 4th spot and lost.
There is something about the way Pido Jarencio coached that makes his team respond when they need to. Also, JV Cruz is a player a coach can build around.
I see it as UST fighting it out for a Final Four slot. But getting to the finals will be an extremely difficult task.

Casio may come in offf the bench in the beginning so that his wrist can heal in time for the homestretch.

Tony,
I guess the easy answer to your question is to find the oldest person on the roster - OR - transferees who might hit 25 in say 2-3 years - OR - someone rumored already taking up residency.
From 16 - 14 - 15 - 16. The number and purpose still eludes me.
As for the “No Masteral Students Allowed” to “Masteral Students Allowed only if you graduated from the same University”, I have an idea who benefited from this rule, unfortantely, they did not make it last year.

the way things are turning out, i think the UAAP is just a circus. rules are changed to put certain quarters at an advantage and then they will try to get the number to pass the vote.
if the member schools have any sense of decency at all, they should start correcting the errors the league is plagued with not only now but also of the recent past.
it only seems to me now the current uaap board is manned by idiots. if nothing is done to stem the tide of idiocy in this league, i don’t think i can brag anymore about my school being a champion in the uaap.

That’s why I tip my hat off to the NCAA. Their system may not be perfect but at least they are working very hard to create a better framework.
I have said this in the past. The NCAA has an Executive Council made up of the Presidents of all their members. The UAAP has none. The Board is the ultimate authority.

Your comments definitely means that the UAAP is all ready to start. Still bitter that La Salle won last year? BOO HOO HOO!!!
Don’t worry you get another crack this year.
Changes made 3 weeks before the season begins is not okay.
I am suspicious about players who are caught with tampered birth certificates yet no consequences are given.
I am suspicious when rules are broken and later mended with the “it did not change the outcome of the game” reason.
I am suspicious when a 25 year old is still in college playing basketball. At that age, he should already be in the PBA.
I won’t even dignify your comparison about my school and PCU. All I know is that we are the defending champions.

The Eagles are always packed with talent. Unfortunately, they always end up short.
They were suppose to have beaten UST 2 years ago but they choked.
They beat La Salle 3 out of 5 time last year but lost the games that mattered.
If it was all about talent, than UE would have been champions last year. Maybe that’s why Ateneo ends up empty handed because they are solely basing their run for a crown solely on talent.

Refarding the scoop, please bear in mind that it was not this writer or inboundpass that mentioned the word “scoop”. It was the person who posted a comment.
I have contacted the person and it is a legitimate issue that we will bring out in due time. I am just waiting for some documentary evidence.
Let me give you a hint. It is about a rookie who had allegedly finished his first and second year high school studies in the province and then came to Manila and repeated these 2 years so he could play for the high school team for 4 years.
We at inboundpass are not posting angthing else about this matter until it is verified with documentary evidences. It is very easy to accuse but it has to be proven.
We, however thank the person who brought up the matter and also others who have done the same for trusting in inboundpass to bring out the truth.

The Green Mind,
Why was Chris Tiu still playing for Season 71?
He was a rookie in 2003 then playing for his 6th year.
Some people told me that he was an exchange student…
Sir Tony,
Kindly confirm this….

why the heck is that UAAP observers are getting all the scoop and not the UAAP board itself?

simply because that is not the job of the UAAP board. in fact, it is nobody’s job. scoops are just scoops if not supported with evidence. it’s the job of journalists to dig out details behind the scoop before they can bring it out.
even inboundpass is not obligated to raise such things to the UAAP board. as sports journalists, it is obligated to gather evidence and if with merit, they can post what they find in inboundpass.com. the UAAP board can only act on it if a member school finds the report credible enough, whether it came from inboundpass or some other sources. whether the UAAP board acts on it or not is another story.

@PC
Tiu skipped one playing year (2005, I think) and opted to become an exchange student. Yes he started playing in 2003 and will end this 2008, but will play for only 5 seasons (much like how DLSU’s Cholo Villanueva played from 2001-2007, but only played for 5 seasons)
Grrr!

Sorry for using the word “scoop”. It’s not really a “scoop” but what we are tackling here is a licit case.

To all:
I think ateneo has the best recruits in terms of rookies…pero UE,FEU and UST ang may pinakamraming beterano sa line up at almost intact in terms of line up last year and this year….DLSU is always a threat because of the lasalle press defense and franz pumarens coaching…ADU is rebuilding but they can win…UP is also rebuilding but im sure dahil sila host di sila papayag na masweep ulit…NU as always is unpredictable…
tingin ko malakas ang DLSU,FEU and UE in terms of defense tapos ang ADMU if they start well and yung Rookies nila eh maging factor lagi sa game, they can probably secure the twice to beat advantage…UST pa din ang surprise team ko kasi kahit hndi sila sumali sa pre season tournaments eh ang alam ko eh naglaro sila ng tune up games sa mga probinsya sa south… at tungkol sa injuries nila i think yung rookie na si maliksi lang ang grabe injury, cla ababou at jervy cruz ok na ata yung mga slight injuries nila…ADU, UP and NU i think may mga UPSET games lang sila na masusungkit pero mahihirapan sila makafinal four.
maganda tong season kasi halos lahat ng teams malakas at marami posibleng mangyari…anyways this is my opinion and sana kita kita tayo sa mga laro…

As long as Franz Pumaren is their coach, LaSalle would always be in the Final 4 and would always contend for the championship. I am not from LaSalle but I know and have accepted this fact. Any true basketball fan should too. The best thing about UAAP though is that anything goes and upsets are almost always just at the corner. Being biased to your alma mater is your right as student or alumni. This makes watching the games more fun! I hope everyone enjoys the coming season!

There are 4 returning and 4 new courside reporters. La Salle, NU, Adamson and I think UE are having the same courtside reporters.
Ateneo is said to have 2 courtside reporters. One for Thursday games and 1 for Sunday games. Well ABS CBN is owned mostly by Ateneans so I guess that is a benefit they can obtain.

There are rumors going around that Arenas was initially set to attend the game but because the sponsor of the UAAP is Nike, it was decided not to anymore.

CORRECTION:
Its UST not UE who retained their courtside reporters.
Here is a list of this year’s courtside reporters:
1. UE - Alexis Go
2. UST - Diane Querrer
3. Ateneo - Kamae de Jesus & Portia Silva
4. La Salle - Sharon Yu
5. FEU - Kristel Filart
8. NU - Rizza Diaz
7. UP - Patricia Roque
8. AdU - Aaron Atayde (yes he’s my son)

My son is from La Salle. But thats the way it is in the UAAP. Mark Molina and Anton Montinolas are both from Ateneo but are part of the FEU team management. Dindo Pumaren is a La Salle graduate but coaches UE. I think the Athletic Director of Adamson and is from Ateneo.
