UE captures Filoil Flying V Preseason tourney

SMALL ball is the name of the game – at least for the preseason.
University of the East’s pace and quickness triumphed over San Beda’s height advantage as the Red Warriors scored a convincing 81-65 triumph and nailed the second Filoil Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup last June 14, 2008 at The Arena in San Juan City.
Paul Lee, who has been nursing a sprained ankle for the past three weeks, returned to the UE roster and poured in 20 of his 24 points in the final quarter to help bury the Red Lions.
“We lost two big players Kelvin (Gregorio) and Mark (Borboran), so we need to play small and live and die with, said UE coach Dindo Pumaren. “I believe quickness remains our asset even in the coming UAAP.
Lee’s four straight triples in the payoff period gave UE a 72-61 edge. Marcy Arellano, who had nine points, then made it 74-61 after hitting a jumper with less than two minutes left. The San Beda offense remained stagnant until the final buzzer, generating a measly four points.
Lanky big man Hans Thiele powered the Red Warriors’ frontline, scoring 16 points and collecting 11 boards, while ex-San Beda Red Cub James Martinez added 13 markers for the Recto-based squad.
Nigerian behemoth Sam Ekwe led the Red Lions with 17 points and 17 rebounds. Bam Gamalinda also scored 17, while Borgie Hermida chipped in with 13.
Down by eight at the end of the first quarter and six at halftime, San Beda College refused to give up and actually built a 50-45 lead with a few ticks left in the third period. Lee and the rest of the Red Warriors, however, broke the game wide open with a stellar offensive salvo in the last ten minutes of the contest.
Individual Scores:
UE 81: Lee 24, Thiele 16, Martinez 13, Arellano 9, Bandaying 8, Lingganay 4, Espiritu 2, Llagas 2, Etrone 2, Zamar 0.
SBC 65: Gamalinda 17, Ekwe 17, Hermida 13, Menor 6, Tirona 4, Lanete 2, Tecson 2, Marcelo 2, Taupa 2.
Quarter scoring: 12-20, 28-34, 50-47, 81-65

Congrats to UE, lupet mo Paul Lee!, well back to the drawing for the Red Lions, sana marami tayong natutunan sa pre-season tournaments, at maganda sana ang campaign natin sa NCAA.
Animo San Beda!
meooww meooww
Ask ko lang two points lang bang ginawa ni Espiritu … then bakit sya ang MVP? It should be Paul Lee.
Still …
Go San Beda Fight!
@antonio, escobar or escobal po? hehe
wow san beda really changed when they lost aljamal,no one was there to break the other teams momentum
why the hell did they still left paul lee open after making two straight 3pt shots?
i was expecting martinez and arellano will make those killer shots but un-expectingly paul lee was able to pull the trick.hats off to paul lee
i just hope the red lions learned from UE
i guess the NCAA will be more exciting with more challenges
animo san beda
hahah!!! galing talaga!!! go UE!! hayz…
Ekwe’s height advantage was lost because of the rain of treys. I have observed during the Nike and Filoil games that many teams in the NCAA have developed the trey lethal arsenal. I forecast a no three peat for SBC for the other potential champs (JRU, CSJL MIT and SSC) will rein treys on Ekwe. ironic that the three point shots may end the quest for the three peat. TIYAK YUN!
Congrats to UE!
i agree a little bit of adjustments will do. just know who will take the shots to shut them down.look what happened to jazul, di naka porma kay menor nung finals. but with UE’s lineup martinez, arellano and the surprising paul lee? masisira talaga zone mo dun they should’ve make it man to man def
lets just wait till the red lions get their third roar.
Great game by UE, especially Paul Lee, those back breaker threes… Hehehe Fil Oil and NSL tourney is just not for San Beda, but two straight runner up finish ain’t that bad (Fil Oil). It just shows what a disciplined team can do. Good luck to UE for tomorrow’s game, i’m hoping that you capture the NSL crown as well.
Animo San Beda!
PURO KAYO RASON !! .. :D
People may i just remind you this is only a PRESEASON LEAGUE..
Still San Beda has tricks hidden up their sleeve for the upcoming NCAA season..
you may think San Beda has less chance of winning 3pt this season..
but be aware that defending champs has more experience in RETAINING their TITLE!!!
ANIMO SAN BEDA!!!
GO SAN BEDA FIGHT!!!!
congrats ue ….nice game hehehehe
Congrats UE!
Congrats to UE!
congratulations UE!!! Red Lions…congratulations din!!!Good game, medyo unstoppable lang talaga si LEE nung 4th quarter…kapag ganoon eh wala talaga tayong magagawa…momentum is on their side!!! Next Time!! GO SAN BEDA FIGHT!!!
@o.j mayo. blessed talaga ang san beda with talented players, but still depende prin sa coach. i doubt kung madedefend parin ng san beda ung title nila. di na sila ganung kalakas unlyk last yr. and hindi pa ganung kaganda ang rotation ng players nila. hindi kasi magaling ang coach nila, swerte lang sya kasi magagling yung players niya.. di nya kayang gawin yung ginagawang “magic” sa team tulad ng ginagawa ni coach koy banal and coach louie alas..
hats off to the red lions, a great team very difficult to beat.
lupet mo pa rin Paul Lee! tiba tiba Haba Holiday nun….
Animo San Beda!.
may sanib si paul lee kagabi…hahahaha
hats off to him..
congrats to UE…
animo sbc!!
Ok lang matalo! Basta San Beda is so Great!!!
no team can beat it”s fighting Red lions and Cubs Spirit! Animo san Beda!
congrats ue!
galing din ng san beda
humble at sports pa mga supporters
i like bedans more than those greens
hehe
ui!
cno nanonood ng nike summer league champ games ngayon?
cno na champion?
badtrip eh
nanonood ako, nilipat yung tv
hehe
Go Ateneo! The Big Blue Machine wins. Good game by Rabeh, Tiu and Bacon Austria.
But still no Vince Burke in-game sighting. I want to see the hype surrounding that kid.
panalo ateneo?
well, congrats
hehe
tama c bob mcadoo. justify tau mga bedans ng kung anu-ano e talagang talo tau. kala ko ba real men wear red tau. dapat we should accept na talo tau. next time na lang tau bumawi. coach ang problema ng team san beda natin. the sooner coach lim is fired the better for our red lions. kung nandyan c coach coy— masaya lahat bedan community. i suggest that we start a signature campaign to oust coach frankie. dami kz maka coach frankie na panangungunahan ni albert d “bj” almendralejo. wala naman alam sa basketball yan kahit may rexona basketball sya before. OUST! coach frankie right now!
Allow me to say that I appreciate this brillant exchange of ideas in this thread. Now we’re talking basketball.
To add to this talk of coaches, let me share my views on some of the brillant tacticians in the NCAA.
Letran’s Louie Alas, is, by and large, the best tactician in the league. His system of developing young talent is unbelievable. He’s succeeded despite having limited resources compared to other schools in the UAAP and even NCAA.
JRU’s Ariel Vanguardia has totally rebuilt the school’s hoops program. Marc Cagoco was rejected by both Letran and San Beda, but has now caught the eye of schools like UE and FEU, who were actively trying to pull the Davao native out of Shaw. Same goes with John Wilson. UP, FEU and UE all expressed interest in this guy after Season 83. JR Sena was being eyed by San Beda in the offseason. Player development is what Vanguardia is good at, and that’s a mark of a great coach.
Joel Dualan of the PCU Dolphins is one of the best at motivating players. He’s managed to maintain the level of intensity that predecessors Ato Tolentino and Junel Baculi built.
Of course, Gee Abanilla of the Blazers is, for me, one of the best teachers of the game. He won two games in the Filoil tourney with a rookie-laden team. There’s a sense of optimism in the Benilde camp because of his intensity and emphasis on hustle and hard work.
What does San Beda have to show for? In my mind, a talented roster. Enough said, you get my drift, so to speak.
right on @bob mcadoo and @thirdy d pogi! i could have posted the same argument kaya lang baka mabatikos pa being a supporter of la salle.
hindi niyo katulad yung ibang alumni ng san beda kung anu-ano pa ang sinasabi na kailangan pa daw mga adjustment, that they still have to find their rhythm, that they still have some tricks hidden, etc.
what rhythm? what hidden tricks? eh kailan pa ilalabas ito? sa important games? that filoil game with ue is important dahil championship. kung ida-downplay naman ang championship na ito, why bother joining?
but i don’t know if i can pass judgment on frankie lim. only bedans can do that. all i know is that san beda lost to ue.
I get the drift. It showed last Saturday.
Congrats UE. Better luck next time San Beda if may chance pa kayo. I think their supporters will be in hiatus again since they will be losing Ekwe at Escobal next season. Hopefully they will have new players that could replace those 2. Sayang si Emeka Udo. Peace.
go san beda fight!!!
antayin nyo, champion na naman kami!!!
@mr christian, totoo bang mawawala na si escobal next year?
to @celtic_pride:
..and all we know was La Salle also lost to who else, to the team that you hated the most..SAN BEDA RED LIONS ☺
Why not just discuss your school team’s plans, looks like you know everything huh?
ANIMO __________!☺
UE naman preseason lang magaling haha
Yes, this will be Pong Escobal’s final year. Same goes for Sam Ekwe
The red squad of Recto prevailed. Congrats Warriors!! The real battle is just yet to come! ;)
ANG SARAP MAGING UENIAN! ü
