Tamaraws stave off UE, notch sixth win

FAR Eastern University showed its endgame heart to repulse University of the East’s fourth quarter comeback attempt and hold on for an 84-82 last June 4, 2008, in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Invitational Cup at the San Juan Arena.

With sizeable crowds cheering on their respective teams in the tourney’s penultimate elimination round playdate, the Tamaraws took an 81-72 lead when veteran Benedict Fernandez drained a trey with 1:58 to go in the final period.

But the Red Warriors dished out a serious two-minute scoring blitz behind James Martinez and Marcy Arellano, uncorking an 8-0 spurt to slice the deficit to 80-81 with only 24 ticks to go.

FEU center Robert Kave, a member of Papua New Guinea’s Under-20 national team, buried a triple in the fading seconds before Arellano responded with a lay-up. As a result, the Morayta-based cagers notched their sixth win in seven games, assuring them of at least the number two slot in the quarterfinals.

The Tamaraws were a perfect 6-for-6 from three-point range in the fourth quarter, and 10-of-18 overall, key statistics that offset the 26 turnovers that they committed during the game.

“It’s a statement that we can beat UE, but I guess the main factor here is the players’ maturity in handling pressure games such as this one, said FEU coach Glen Capacio, who played alongside his counterpart, UE’s Dindo Pumaren, in the professional ranks in the 90s.

UE suffered its second loss in seven games but is also assured of a spot in the quarterfinals, which start next Tuesday, June 10. Arellano led the Red Warriors with 17 points, while Pari Llagas scored 16.

Individual Scores:

FEU 84 - Cawaling 18, Baracael 13, Kave 11, Barroca 10, Adolfo 7, Fernandez 7, Knuttel 6, Sanga 5, Alisbo 3, Ramos 2, Cervantes 2, Noundo 0.

UE 82 - Arellano 17, Llagas 16, Bandaying 14, Martinez 13, Espiritu 10, Thiele 5, Reyes 3, Etrone 2, Lee 2, Duran 0.

Quarter Scores: 17-18, 40-33, 59-52, 84-82.

This is the second time that the Tamaraws beat the Warriors - the last one was at the NIKE Summer League 2008. Although, the game was no bearing since both teams are in the quarterfinals.

I’m a UE fan and I wonder why the UE players are very incosistent. I watched all his games from Fr. Martin Cup 2008 to HAIL 2008, where UE were unbeaten and champions. Although, the team made it to quarterfinals both in NIKE Summer League and Fil Oil Tournament, there is no guarantee that my team will win championships because of the inconsistency of some players.

It is just a point of view, but I still bet UE will get the crown(s) this year particularly the much coveted UAAP crown. Coach Dindo is a very very good coach although madalas syang mag yell sa mga players. Mataas na ang narating ng UE under coach Dindo sana huwag sayangin ito ng mga players.

    GO UE GO WARRIORS …..

Sana sa susunod naka-lagay po ang mga ito dito sa website na ito. Thanks and more power sa inboundpass.

soul228, if there’s one thing i can be sure of is that JR Cawaling is not the player being referred to as ineligible, if that news even happens to be true. he’s only on his second year, thus he did not play in the years 2003 and 2005. =)
