The Talented Mr. Udo

It was a case of bad DNA.

As reported by my esteemed colleague Mr. Tony L. Atayde about the disappearance of San Beda Red Lions Forward Kevin Emeka Udo, three facts revolve around his report. He asked money from a priest for a plane ticket to his home town, like a Flipino TNT, and his father is sick.

It was made known to me that Udo’s story about his ailing father might be the prelude towards a grand escape plan, that he was setting up everybody on this empathy process. Whether his story is true or True or not, Udo has been spreading this news for months, which means that he was trying to gather affinity hoping that it would help his cause. In other words, a plan is forming.

The Red Lions left for the US to train at the Home Depot Center and join the Abunassar Basketball Camp and urban legend has it that Udo brought with him two, not one, pairs of suits. Now why would anyone bring a suit to training were all you need are your basketball jerseys, maybe 1, 2 or even 3 pairs of basketball shoes, casual shirts, jeans, jackets, sweaters to dine out and maybe do some shopping, anybody heard of a basketball suit and tie, if you do, please let me know, I might turn out to be a cool customer.

If feel bad for San Beda’s spiritual adviser (I understand the monks privacy policies and will not mention his name), talk about bad DNA, Udo is untruly Bedan and untruly Christian. Shame on him to take advantage of a priest. Since I know this spiritual adviser, I’d rather sympathize on what he’s been thru.

I’m pretty sure none of the coaching staff knew about what was going on. If they did, I assure you that none of this will ever have happened, and let’s not get carried away of accusing the spiritual adviser have been taking things for granted, but common, let’s face it, its just too bad that this priest has a soft spot.

Anyway, if the coaching staff were informed of Udo’s plan – to go to Nigeria and see his father – I assure you that they would know the sanest way to deal with him. The best way is for Udo to come back to the Philippines and then leave for Nigeria, makes sense right. But again it didn’t happen that way. It was clearly a scam of get some money and TNT. Call it what you may, even the corporate HR term, AWOL, has been used within and around the league to explain this demise.

Assumptions from the grapevine has it that maybe one of Udo’s reasons for quitting the Red Lions roster is he didn’t like being canned after their FilOil Flying V Preseaon Tournament match against Ateneo. I used the extreme description to let you all know that this is plain and simple BS. No excuses whatsoever can help Udo justify to jump ship and leave your teammates. To me any excuse from him is a lot of Bull.

But life goes on for the Red Lions. If he ever comes back, even if he ever does re-appear in San Beda’s gates dressed in Red and White, I just hope that the community don’t give him the red carpet treatment.

Yan kasi ang common impression ng mga tao at lalo na ng mga agilang azul.

“you support your school and I’ll support mine” so what’s the point of reading this article and posting your comments if you don’t give a damn about our school?

we relying on imports? come on! you people got to be kidding me. wala bang imports ang la salle? ehh ang ibang school? wala din ba?

alam naming mga bedista na lahat ng players namin ay talagang pusong bedista. hindi katulad sa IBA na binabayaran ang mga players ng magagarang condo, kotse at pera. HOW DO I KNOW? nagturo ermats ko sa DLSU. at naging studyante nya ang karamihan sa mga players niyo..

I know UDO a lot. I used to play with him in some in the Basketball tournaments here in Sngapore. He is really a good player and a hard worker. But for him, he wanted to be compensated on all his contributions but sometimes he asks too much too ask.

For me, this has been the problem in the collegiate basketball in our country. UDO can be a victim and a suspect but I believed it is all about the system. Collegiate basketball is all about the Love of the game, passion of the sport and the pride of the school. If these 3 qualities are instilled on a player, for sure he can be the best irregardless of all material things around the league.

in fact, i think the manner bedans use the word “animo” is a conjugation of the spanish verb “animar”. which happens to be correct also.

but for la sallites, animo is a noun which means spirit for them.

for bedans, the word animo is related to the verb “animar” (to encourage). so animo may mean courage as well. literal translation for “animo san beda” should be “encourage san beda”. not “courage san beda” as mentioned by others because bedans use the word in its verb form. in other words, it’s a call on bedans not to give up.

but animo, as used by la sallites, relate it to the latin word “alma”, meaning soul or spirit. it’s a play on words such as alma mater, school spirit, etc. hence, animo la salle.

don’t criticize me on this. songwriters do this a lot of times. check the lyric in the beatles song “plasticine porters with looking-glass ties” or “newspaper taxis appear on the shore”. these don’t mean anything and may not even make sense but that song earned them millions of dollars. that’s how they write song lyrics by playing on words.

but in la salle’s case, it does make sense to use animo to mean spirit and coin a phrase animo la salle which is basically a cry to raise the school spirit.

i hope bedans would understand this and stop all this nonsense that la sallians don’t know the meaning of animo or that we are using the word wrongly.

there’s a thing called philology, the study of how words change from culture to culture over time. i don’t know why until now the use of the word “animo” is being defended by its ancient meaning.

just an example, the term alma mater in latin used to mean nourishing mother. check wikipedia. now it refers to the school one came from and is accepted as part of the english language. hence, la sallites would equate animo with alma, soul that is, as in school spirit. because that’s how it evolved for us.

in spanish, it is more acceptable to use animo to mean spirit or soul.

the more usual term for courage in spanish is valor, not animo.

although one of the original meanings of animo is also courage, but rarely used in this context in the spanish language.

bedans can use animo to mean courage because that’s how the word evolve for them.

I’ve seen the bbxn site before and gave a call to confirm and yes he did play for them with no money invloved and they had only good things to say about Udo. When you have corporate sponsors banner your league, chances are it might be a commerical league.

The only sanctioned commercial league by the NCAA and also by the UAAP is the PBL. Other than that, there is a risk of a violation
