Return of the PCU Dolphins

A YEAR without the “Bad Boys� of the NCAA is more than enough.
Philippine Christian University returns to the hardwood of the country’s oldest collegiate league after a year in the basketball wilderness. A year’s suspension was, in my view, the right penalty, considering that one of its high school players was either coerced or duped into falsifying his birth certificate in order to increase his number of playing years.
The facts surrounding that story have been well-established, but the way the Dolphins were treated after that was despicable, to say the least.
First, it’s mind-boggling that PCU was never invited to any preseason tournament this year. The Nike Summer League, for instance, involves non-UAAP and NCAA schools like Don Bosco Technical College and Lyceum of the Philippines. Is the NCAA suspension carried over to other leagues? To call this unfair would be an understatement.
To some extent, the Filoil Flying V snub could be justified, since it involved UAAP and NCAA schools only. If one is to work under the assumption that the Taft-based squad were still suspended this year, then that was an acceptable decision. But again, does a suspension from one league apply to ALL other leagues?
This brings me to my second point. What took NCAA league officials so long to decide on PCU’s fate? The Dolphins issue was supposed to be settled first right after Holy Week. Then, it was moved to mid-April. The matter dragged on until just last week, when coach Joel Dualan’s wards were told they could play.
Along the way, a million news reports on the PCU eligibility issue surfaced. Some slanted towards prolonging the school’s penalty, while others continued to harp on the falsification of documents by the Baby Dolphins. Also, rumors on a possible eighth team to replace PCU spread. These were in more ways than one caused by indecisiveness on the matter.
When De La Salle University was meted a similar punishment in 2006, nobody spoke of finding a replacement for the Green Archers in the UAAP. The one-year penalty was on paper, and everyone expected the Green and White to play in 2007. Why couldn’t have PCU been dealt with this way? Because it isn’t as popular or wealthy? Why are we setting a double standard even in basketball?
I spoke to Dualan a few days ago, and the ex-PBA player echoed the same sentiments. “Without sour-graping, we had a tough time this past year. We tried to practice everyday, but it didn’t work. Some of the players would ask, ‘Saan ba tayo maglalaro?’ At first, I said, ‘Just wait.’ Then the situation dragged on, Jason Castro left and I couldn’t blame him. Other players left too. I had a hard time recruiting. There was so much uncertainty. So now, naghihikahos kami sa paghahabol.�
The Dolphins are aiming to put all that aside in preparation for Season 84. Center Beau Belga will play for the squad this year, along with holdovers Lisztian Amparado, Jumel Chien, Lei Mar Navarro and DJ Santos. Dualan is also expecting big things from rookies Joed Batuigas, ex-UST Team B player Rogelio Busa and former Baby Dolphin Harold Sumera.
PCU plays its first game on opening day, June 28, at 8 p.m. against the College of Saint Benilde Blazers. Its comeback, hopefully, restores the “Bad Boy,� physical and hard-nosed image the team is known for on the court, and deflects any negative attention that may have been caused by the “bad� handling of the eligibility issue.

Dear Mr. Knowit All,
My girlfriend is pregnant and I’d like to be very supportive. I love her so much and I’m excited to be a new dad!
Right now, she’s always queasy, uncomfortable and needy. At time’s I’d like to be by her side as she goes thru the joys and pains of pregnancy. Because of this, I’ve been frequently absent.
One day, my supervisor handed over a memo. I got shocked because I knew that my reasons were valid and I’m sure any expectant dad would do the same.
Why are they being inconsiderate?

I’m happy that you’re excited and thrilled to be a new dad. But I’d like to share a thing or two regarding attendance concerns in the workplace.
Companies such as the one you work for consider emergency leaves to be confinement/hospitalization and life or death situations involving yourself or (1) immediatefamily - first degree; (2) extending up to parents-in-law, for married employees, (3) grandparents and siblings - 2nd degree; (4) adoptive parents and (5) adopted child. These are deemed to be excused and authorized. Moreover, contagious diseases and/or those for which the doctor requires the patient to rest for two or more days (with valid medical certificate) are considered valid.
All other cases not mentioned shall be deliberated on case-to-case basis and must be consulted with HR.
Furthermore, an absence maybe UNAUTHORIZED due to lack of merit:
Not aligned with the Attendance Policy
Absence not urgent and/or important
Answers given by the employee are inconsistent
Does not apply as an exception
or your department may disallow an unscheduled leave if program staffing levels would be affected.

All about WORK… being at our VERY BEST!
I just wanna share with you this message sent out to us by our (eTelecare Alabang) Site Director, Rea Reyes. This is actually made for people who always work, work and work. I find this message as a “wake up call” for those people who always whine about their job. It’s an “eye opener”. Please do have time to read it and see it for yourself… c”,)

Does this story sound familiar or do you know anyone who acts or feels this way? Who takes a while preparing for work? Who does chores and takes care of their family before going to work? Who has dates scheduled or goes to the gym? Who needs to attend to other things instead of being at work? One thing is certain. Most people, including yourself, live busy lives, but we must learn to take care of priorities.
A job, whether we like it or not, is one of the top necessities of life. We need the money we earn not only to enjoy our gimmicks, out of towns, shopping, etc. but also to survive and provide for ourselves and our family.
When employers schedule their work day and plan what is to be accomplished, they need to know they can depend on the people they have scheduled. It is difficult, if not impossible, to plan a day if you don’t know when an employee will show up. And face it, every employee may not realize how far-reaching his importance is.
Being habitually late or missing work is not a personal private thing - IT AFFECTS OTHERS! When a member of the team is not there to do what we have been hired to do, others suffer. Success is built on team work and if you don’t do your part, you cause the team to fall apart. Moreover, always remember, punctuality does not only apply to arrival time, but also to returning from lunch or break.
Of course, emploers do not expect you to work if you are trully ill. They also realize that emergencies occasionally come up that require tardiness. In these cases, it is extremely important to let your employer know as early as possible so that appropriate action can be taken to cover for you while you are out.
Unfortunately, though, being constantly late or missing work altogether, are easy habits to fall into. Each time it happens, it gets a little easier to do or accept again. These are habits that could cost you not only your job, but also a chance at future employment as well. So why risk it?
Employers need dependable people! There is money as well as reputation at stake and they must know that a job will be covered or completed on time.
Even if you have no qualms about leaving an employer, you should think about Number 1—yourself.
Employers need dependable people to get the job done. Good attendance and punctuality also show an employer that you have a good attitude toward your job. Dependability and attitude go a long way in helping you to get pay raises, promotions and better references.

Things are looking bleak for the Dolphins. But don’t fret, their last game against the Bombers was an awakening. They now know that even with a comparatively “weaker” line-up, they can fight bacvk and possibly win. Things will start picking up at the start of the 2nd round starting with SSC-R.

masyado naman binugbog ang PCU…baka natatakot na ang mga old guards sa emergence ng PCU as a contender for the overall title.
Sa basketball lalo..Imagine suspending the school that produced Jason Castro(3 time pbl mvp at first pinoy to play sa NBL)..tsk tsk….nakakalungkot ung mga ganong talent ay hindi na natin makikita..
nagbabago na tlga ang NCAA…sana ilimit nila height ng import para even ang chances ng mga schools
