On Eligibility, Udo, Adamson and Other Tidbits!

When are all these issues concerning player eligibility ever going to stop?  Whether it’s the NCAA or the UAAP, the issue just keeps cropping its ugly head like a turd in the toilet bowl.

In the 2 biggest collegiate leagues, this matter has been an unresolved problem for the longest time. In the UAAP, it became national news when La Salle returned its championship trophy and was suspended for a year for fielding 2 players who had submitted bogus documents as part of their playing requirements.

Last year, Jojo Duncil of then defending champion UST, was found to have a questionable birth certificate and quit the team right before the season began.  Unfortunately, the matter was not investigated further and nothing was resolved.

The NCAA showed its assertiveness by suspending PCU for massive fraudulent documentation and even identity switching in their junior basketball team.   PCU will return this year but has requested for a leave of absence next year.  Why…I have no idea!

Are the stakes really that high for players to risk destroying not just their reputations, but more so that of the educational institutions they play for?  Is it beyond the realm of possibilities for the member schools of the UAAP and the NCAA to institute a systematic eligibility screening system that will be more effective than what they have now?  Again, in this matter, the NCAA seems to be more pro-active than the UAAP.

In the past, the UAAP has accepted xerox copies of birth certificates.  However, computers have made this the most vulnerable form of proof of birth.  Scanning and tampering with the document’s information has now become child’s play.  A simple rule stating that original NSO birth certificates have to be submitted will definitely make things a lot more transparent and easily verifiable.

Eligibility accusations are also unfair to be made by anyone without supporting facts.  It can easily destroy the team and the player’s reputations when these accusations are made and later unsubstantiated.  But because the eligibility system of collegiate basketball is flawed, these accusations will definitely continue.

What boggles the mind is that the UAAP and the NCAA are made up of learning institutions with some of the best minds in the country, yet they cannot sit down and put together systems and procedures that are reflective of the needs of the times.
College basketball is big business.  With TV rights alone reaching many millions, shouldn’t the leagues be more conscious of their responsibility to their respective institution’s stakeholders.  For the players, collegiate basketball is their ticket to a big professional payoff.  So much is at stake yet so much is left undone.

Tidbits:
In both the Filoil and Nike leagues, Adamsom University has shown a lot of promise.  They beat La Salle and had many closely contested matches with other powerhouse teams.  If they carry this on to the UAAP, it will definitely make the race to the Final Four super interesting.

San Beda seems to have hit a roadblock with the disappearance of Nigerian Emeka Udo, while the team was in the USA.  Unconfirmed reports state that Udo had approached a San Beda priest and informed him of an emergency that required him to go to Nigeria.  The priest, who believed his story, gave him airfare money.  Udo disappeared shortly thereafter.  It is what we Filipinos call TNT.

This will definitely affect the future trips of other collegiate teams to the USA.  The US Embassy will definitely have a stronger screening process because of this.
Will Jervy Cruz be 100% when the UAAP starts?  This is one question that many are asking.  Cruz who got injured when he slipped on a wet floor in the PBL, didn’t see action in the finals.  Hapee sure could have used him.  Jervy is the cornerstone of Pido Jarencio’s team and if he is not 100%, it will definitely affect the Tigers’ chances of a Final Four appearance.  As it stand now, La Salle, UE, FEU, UST, Ateneo and the surging Adamson Falcons are going to battle it out for the Final Four.

Well, my beloved Boston Celtics are in NBA Finals against arch rival Los Angeles Lakers.  I am going to sit back and enjoy this prelude to the UAAP season.  When it’s green I am truly in.

@Jojo Duncil, oo nga hindi magalaw ang UST. But so what? Do you gain anything from it? Probably, by having preferential treatment. Other schools will opt for fair and honest treatment and equal application of the rules. That’s what sports is all about and you seem not to understand this at all.

    red01,

TNT means Tago Ng Tago. If San Beda could not find him, then it stands to reason that he is hiding and hiding or tago ng tago.

    Its as simple as that!

@red01, if nobody knows where Udo is and it seems that he is not in contact with San Beda at all, don’t you think it’s pretty safe to “assume” nag-TNT nga siya sa U.S. because that’s where he was seen last?

ang proof ng nag TNT is hindi mo siya mahanap o ma-kontak. nagtatago nga eh!

unless may masamang nangyari sa kanya, which we all hope not.

anyway, maghanap na lang kayo ng iba. don’t defend Udo. his actions don’t deserve him being a part of san beda.

    Tony A.
I’m glad you mentioned “Unconfirmed reports” regarding Udo’s story. But saying “TNT”, i think it’s still early to make such presumption.

    Keep it up.
    Animo San Beda!

until it’s not proven yet that Udo’s overstaying in the states, I don’t think he deserves to be branded as TNT. If I’m not mistaken, his visa is still valid so in case he’s still there, he’s not overstaying.

AFAIK nobody knows where he is, so its difficult to agree with Tony (unless he’s got Udo’s contact info).

you really won’t understand because you, duncil, and your school won’t admit to any wrongdoing. even going as far as to feign innocence about the issue and pin the blame on other people like the city/municipal registrar and duncil’s mother.

if you think there was some fault committed by UST and/or Duncil, then the least you could do is stop defending them on this issue. the problem is you even attacked us who have raised this thing but never even gave a good counter-argument on why this issue should already be dead. all you keep on saying is that duncil is not with the uaap anymore but never even mentioned in any of your posts that duncil’2 birth certificate was tampered. i for one, am not questioning duncil’s age in 2006. i am questioning why there is a birth certificate that shows his birth year as 1983 and this was the one in the records of the UAAP. i am also raising the issue that there was an attempt by UST to still field him in 2007 which makes him ineligible already.

being a supporter of la salle, the school that was suspended because of rules violation, we feel shortchanged when similar issues are found against other schools but are being let go to avoid punishment.

I honestly do not understand why do you keep on pushing this issue!! If you are after for UST’s suspension like what was did to La Salle, then again, it is up to UAAP Board’s hands right now. Nobody can dictate, not even you what has to be their decision. I suggest you to Pray hard that this issue gets resolved soon. :p

As to where duncil is, I don’t know! We’re not close for me to know his whereabouts. All I know he currently plays for Red Bull in PBA. If he doesn’t make any impact at all, so what? besides, he’s just a rookie! No one is expecting him to step up big time just yet.

Blah blah blah.. this doesn’t make sense to me anymore. Good luck to you sir!

ang issue is tampered ang documents niya. the same issue kung saan nalagay sa kaparusahan ang La Salle, which is fake or tampered DECS documents by some of its players.

ang masama pa, there was an attempt by UST to defraud the league last year by still having Duncil in their lineup. buti na lang may lumabas na tunay na birth certificate ni duncil at bigla silang umatras.

so asan si duncil mo ngayon? he is not even making an impact sa pro leagues ngayon.

i suggest that the UAAP board of committee must investigate about the inefficient men’s basketball players of adamson university. many of them are not attending their classes yet when the season is coming up, they are busy on asking favors to their professors for them to pass and be abel to play on UAAP. It’s just being unfair with those other sports event because they are really studying just to have scholarship and play in the league. While these men’s basketball players are just busy roaming around and sleeping in their dormitories. Some of them also fake their grades and medical just to play.. they’re just being unfair on players who really deserved to be lined up. I also suggest that you must see the ages of them..I’m just a concern student because I’m a fan of other event players in adamson.. while they’re studying much, OTHER PLAYERS ARE JUST USING THEIR CHARMS JUST TO PASS AND YET DO NOT KNOW ABOUT ANY LESSONS AT ALL..,.. UAAP BOARD OF COMMITTEE MUST READ THIS!! ADAMSON MEN’S SENIOR BASKETBALL TEAM MUST BE BANNED THIS SEASON!!!

ang patulan ka pa ay isang kabobohan! I have seen a lot of comments here and in other forum sites. I can’t count anymore the number of articles posted about this issue. And I had enough of them, so I’d rather move on from it. Why can’t you? :p What’s the fuss? The kid is no longer playing in the league. If you are suggesting the crown should be taken back then think again. He was indeed eligible when he played for Season 69 even if his BC was tampred. If he was born in 1982 that made him 24 in 2006 season thus, still eligible. Well, I don’t think I still have to make a comment on your post honestly! Why don’t you just read all the comments in the previous threads and articles about this issue. There you would find some explanations and findings on Duncil’s part. If you’re not satisfied enough, then nothing we can do about it. Do your own research, punta ka dun sa munisipyo nila kung gusto mo interbyuhin mo nanay nya bahala ka just to prove it. UST and Duncil just answered this issue. If I’m not mistaken the ball is now in the hands of the UAAP Board. Now that UP is the host, maybe they can do something about it. All I can say is..Good luck! ;)

Whamos, saan ka ba galing at nag-aral? Sa UST? Faking public documents like birth certificates is a crime.

Ano sinasabi mong mga faked PEP and entrance tests? Wala naman tinatago ang La Salle on this? At hindi kagagawan ng school yun but those individuals who had them trying to mislead the school.

Eh yung kay Duncil mismong UST pinagtatakpan ang ang issue.

All in all, both cases are wrong. But in the case of La Salle, inadmit nila ang wrongdoing ng students and some “officials” involved. Kaya nga tanggal sila Benitez, et al. Eh ang UST hinihintay pa ng lahat ang official and comprehensive statement on the issue and why it and what happened. Last I heard your priest, Mr. de Sagun, said “Duncil is a good boy”. Lying is now considered good at UST, I think.

    Whamos,

That is the dumbest bit of logic I have ever heard. Faking papers, no matter what kind, is wrong. It was not the civil registrar’s office who was mistaken. Duncil’s birth certificate was tampered.

Very Opinionated. Very Green. Hate him. Love Him. It does not matter and he does not care. A Howard Stern in cyberspace. He bleeds Green, He is purely from La Salle – as a former writer and Assistant Vice President for Events of the DLSU Alumni Association. Played basketball and was on the track and field team for La Salle during the NCAA just don't ask what year.
