Falcons and Blazers, here they come

They are considered as one of the college teams to watch for this season. They may not tickle your fancy but maybe outside the more popular teams out there, the College of St. Benilde Blazers and the Adamson Falcons might put on a little show.
With the coaching carousel rocking their respective campuses, the Falcons and the Blazers are getting better with their campaign in the ongoing Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Invitational tournament.
Adamson brought back head coach Leo Austria in the Falcons’ nest after leaving them for a lucrative coaching job in the PBA. With a forgettable stint in the pros, Leo decided to return to the school which he sent to the Final Four in 2006.
Austria’s record was 7-29 for the 2006-2007 PBA Season and 3-15 in the Philippine Cup.
In fact, it was Adamson’s first final four appearnace since a new UAAP basketball format was introduced in 1994.
“My players want to win and it is good to be back here in this school. This is what I call home,” said Austria, receiving a barrage of calls from the Adamson community before deciding to return to collegiate coaching.
College of St. Benilde, on the other hand, had a forgettable year with Paolo Orbeta’s involvement in illegal gambling, point shaving and game fixing accusations after the National Bureu of Investigation (NBI) caught him through an entrapment operation.
Then, after finishing last season with a single win and 11 losses, Caloy Garcia was replaced by Red Bull assistant coach Gee Abanilla for Season 84.
We can say it was a total improvement when the Blazers bashed the Letran Knights, 71-64, last April 28, 2008 in the Flying V tournament and then they lost to Ateneo in a hotly contested game, 72-76, last April 30, then defeated San Sebastian last May 12.
Even at a 2-3 slate, after losing to the National University Bulldogs last May 21, nobody can dare say that the Blazers will have another whippin season.
There is a new atmosphere in the team, with Aaron Umlas, guard Chuck Delanon and Jeff Morial getting better in each game. “The boys are very interested to listen to me. I know there will be a time that we will find our winning ways,” said Abanilla. “All the players need is confidence. If they have it, they will be dangerous.”
Leo Austria stays humble with his prediction when he said that “The boys will just do whatever they needed to do, whatever they need to learn and, of course, we will fight for our pride. That’s all. And we’ll keep fighting.”
The Falcons have recruited Alex Nuyles, a promising swingman, journey man 6-foot-6 Michael Galinato and the leaderhip of Paul Gonzalgo, Eric Canada and Lester Alvarez could spell the difference for the Falcons in UAAP Season 71.
Who knows?
An upset over the Far Eastern University Tamaraws a week ago, 73-63, the Falcons proved that they can be one of the darkhorse. Canada had 21 points to lead them, while Gonzalgo had 17 points. If this continue, it will be a bright spot for the for the Falcons.

Teams live and die with coaching. Having Coach Leo as the head coach of the team is a great opportunity in bringing back the winning form of the Adamson Soaring Falcons.
They are now commanding RESPECT from the rest of the collegiate teams..RESPECT…that is earned thru sheer hardwork & determination translated to WINS..
Unawakanahimo Falcons!

2004?! I think Adamson’s first entry in the Final 4 Era was only in 2006.
Well regardless of the error, I think that both Adamson and CSB in their respective leagues will be a force to reckon or the season’s darkhorses.
Who knows? Adamson & CSB may enter the final 4… and the finals?!
Goodluck to both teams!

uh oh..adamson is attracting attention from this website. They should be wary of a group with vested interest out to destroy their chances. FEU, UST, UE, NU and UP should also take note.

Thanks for the encouraging story for both teams, hope this will further boost their morales. Im just wondering, can CSB still make it to the quarters of the Filoil tourney? I think its unfair that Mapua would only play 6 games(3-3) while we played 7(2-4) so that means even if we win against AdU, we still cant make it because Mapua would have no games left??

Correction:”we played 7″ should be “we will play 7(after the next game, vs AdU.”

UE,DLSU,FEU or NU yan, Adamson tignan natin, iba sa kanila walang disiplina sa team kaya 2nd to the last sila last season.Ateneo sus, Larong mayaman lang yang mga yan, tignan niyo si Chris Tiu nagArtista, di naman bagay maghost ng isang program just like Pacman.
CSB, uhm i think they should improve their skills and mental toughness, yan kasi ang kulang sa kanila eh. Tanggalin din nila yung ibang players nila na puro papogi lang sa court. Sakit sa mata panuorin yung mag papogi nayun.

kaya lang baka two or one slot na lang ang kulang for the final 4.
San Beda and Letran sure na yan sa final 4, its a battle between JRU, SSC-R, MIT and CSB.
yun lang opinion ko. PCU baka mangapa pa, UPHDS, might surprise us.
Goodluck sa lahat.

@ nyek
As many as 6 teams can be legitimate final four contenders this NCAA season.
@ GreenNinja
Expect Belga to be the forefront of their attack. Holdovers Navarro, Amparado and Chien are also legitimate offensive threats.

i suggest that the UAAP board of committee must investigate about the inefficient men’s basketball players of adamson university. many of them are not attending their classes yet when the season is coming up, they are busy on asking favors to their professors for them to pass and be abel to play on UAAP. It’s just being unfair with those other sports event because they are really studying just to have scholarship and play in the league. While these men’s basketball players are just busy roaming around and sleeping in their dormitories. Some of them also fake their grades and medical just to play.. they’re just being unfair on players who really deserved to be lined up. I also suggest that you must see the ages of them..I’m just a concern student because I’m a fan of other event players in adamson.. while they’re studying much, OTHER PLAYERS ARE JUST USING THEIR CHARMS JUST TO PASS AND YET DO NOT KNOW ABOUT ANY LESSONS AT ALL..,.. UAAP BOARD OF COMMITTEE MUST READ THIS!! ADAMSON MEN’S SENIOR BASKETBALL TEAM MUST BE BANNED THIS SEASON!!!

Please provide proof SPY to strengthen you claim… Actually, if you are charging Adamson with that, you have to look to other school as well…

@ Green Ninja
Jumel Chien is still young and according to some scouts and coaches, he is touted to be the next “big” thing for the Dolphins. He was born on 08/13/88 and hails from Escalante, Negros Occidental. He honed his skills playing for Iloilo Chinese Commercial High School, a school well-known for its great basketball program and pedigree. PBA Superstars James Yap and Ken Bono heads the long list of basketball standouts the school has produced. The highly recruited Chien was named captain during his senior year, wherein he led his team to an unbeaten record in secondary basketball competetions in Visayas and Mindanao while grabbing championships and individual accolades along the way. His team also had a great run during the 2006 National Students’ Basketball Championships wherein they placed 2nd. They dismantled the opposition, which included some UAAP and NCAA high schools, only to suffer their lone defeat against the controversial PCU Baby Dolphins squad in the championship match. He ended his high school career by leading Western Visayas to a 2nd place finish, behind the Borgie Hermida-led NCR, in the 2006 Palarong Pambansa. He already has one year of NCAA experience under his belt, playing for the runner-up Dolphins in Season 82. He was a key part of the Dolphins’ rotation, primarily tasked to defend opposing key players such as San Beda’s Pong Escobal in the finals and to bring some offensive firepower from off the bench. With David and Castro gone, a lot is expected from Amparado and Chien this season.
Surigao native Ian Garrido was born on 08/09/1982. He will be 26 by year-end. Basically, Garrido is over the age limit previously set by the NCAA, thus making him ineligible to compete in the league. Losing Garrido is not as detrimental in losing Castro. Kervin McCoy would probably step in to Garrido’s role. He will be the “new” guy tasked to bring the intagibles.

what the blazers need:
*big men that will fight inside the paint
–yes, their big men can definitely shoot from the outside but that’s only an icing on the cake. big men’s main role is INSIDE the paint, produce points and grab the badly needed REBOUNDS.
*clarified meaning of TEAMWORK
–let’s face it blazers, that is one department where you suck badly. view previous games for evidence. review stats for further tangible proof. your assists are way below the mark.
–you have guys who will go straight to the basket. ok, so you are going strong to the basket. question is, are you alone? or do you have a TEAMMATE trailing from behind? trust me, 1 against 4 is not a wise move
*point guards who can control the game
–sure, your main role is to bring the ball down. then again, you are the leaders inside the court, because you direct. if your team needs some spark, give it. if given the chance, take the shot. step up!
*familiarization
–given, because almost everyone is new.
*HEART
–few men have that heart to go fight for the ball. if there is such, i would quote, “heart can give you that drive to reach what you want”
>>end note: basketball is a game that would require guts. and physical “sacrifice” (minor cuts or bruises may happen). but that’s what makes the game exciting.
moreover, bullet passes is a must.. not all passes are in your terms, perfect, so, fancy passes may also occur, thus, LOOK OUT. your teammate might be dishing out some.
