Red Lions now 4-0 in Flying V Preseason

For some it was de javu. For others, it was just awesome basketball showcased arguably by two of the country’s best in college basketball.

In June 2007, the San Beda College Red Lions went head to head with the University of the East Red Warriors in a battle of red and white at the Arena. That game ended in San Beda’s way in overtime, 96-92, giving them the golden ticket to the finals.

This year, the Red Lions made another run at the Red Warriors despite looking fresh from their two and a half weeks training in the United States, ending in overtime, 99-91, with a comfortable advantage in their bracket with straight 4 wins at the Fil Oil Flying V Pre-season Invitational at the Arena.

Pong Escobal, once again tooked charge and displayed his court leadership scoring 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

It was a sluggish start. After 3 deadlocks, the Red Warriors took the advantage, 21-15, after a 7-0 run by James Martinez, Hans Thiele and Gino Etrone 1:10 minutes left in the first period.

A Hans Thiele put back with only 10 seconds left ended the first quarter 24-17, with the Red Warriors still in control.

In the 2nd quarter, UE rocketed to a 10-point lead after another 7-0 run, 34-24. The Red Lions slowly crawled their way into the game with Sam Ekwe and Borgy Hermida tying the game at 36 with 3:25 minutes left to play in the 1st half. The 1st half ended with the Red Warriors on the driver’s seat, 45-42, in favor of the Warriors.

Martinez nailed a couple of three’s in the third quarter. But it was still a 2-point advantage for the Red Warriors after three quarters of play, 67-65. The Red Lions looked listless but managed to fight back and kept the game close.

In the fourth quarter, with the Red Lions leading by 4 points, 77-73 a technical foul was called at the San Beda bench for arguing a flagrant foul called on Lanete after tapping the ball away from Marcy Arellano. The infraction gave the Red Warriors an opportunity to tie the game at 77-all.

With 4 :26 minutes left in regulation, an Elmer Espiritu steal with an Arellano finish allowed UE to create a 10-point swing giving the Red Warriors a 6-point advantage, 83-77.

Escobal and Lanete conspired to help lock the game at 86-all. With UE over the foul limit, Escobal was fouled in the backcourt and converted both free throws. But Hans Thiele’s follow up from his own miss in the ensuing play forced the game into overtime at 88-all.

In overtime, Escobal took matters into his own hands, scoring 6 points plus a pass to Garvo Lanete who finished with a three-point play that gave the Red Lions a clear 6-point lead.

Ekwe’s icing on the cake with 20 seconds left in the extension period ended the game at 99-91. Ekwe contributed a double-double for the Red Lions with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Escobal said after the game, “Nag-step up talaga lahat ng teammates ko. Down the stretch kung kailangan namin ng stop na stop talaga naming ung UE. And then we made big shots like Lanete made a big shot Pascual made a big shot. Tulong-tulong talaga. It’s a team effort that’s why we won the game.

Box Scores:

SBC 99 - Escobal 24, Ekwe 18, Pascual 12, Lanete 13, Gamalinda 9, Menor 6, Hermida 6, Taganas 4, Taupa 1

UE 91 - Thiele 17, Martinez 14, Espiritu 12, Arellano 15, Lingganay 8, Lee 8, Llagas 6, Tagara 2, Duran 2

i was there and saw everything.. talgang sakitan na talaga.. the pressure started from the coach, then affected na ang buong coaching staff and lastly the whole team was pressured na din..
“Pressure” is something that made the whole team as one.. for those who know what this means, alam niyo na un.. ahahaha!!
Pero Lanete and Pascual are the stand outs talaga.. galing! Pinasok lang si Lanete ng 4th Quarter but he was able to deliver! Galing!

The Red Lions could not get anything from the starters - Menor and Hermida - most likely fatigue from the trip and they look exhausted after 2 Qtrs. Marcy Arellano was roaming and creating for his teammates that’s why they put a much bigger and longer defender on him in the end - Gamalinda. Both teams played excellent defense, but the end game woes of the Red Warriors remain.

Anyway, does anyone know why Udo was absent from yesterday’s game? I’m an SBC fan but James Martinez made his three-pointers look so easy I couldn’t help but be awed. =))

Sorry for the third consecutive post but, if I remembered correctly, Tecson scored five points for SBC.

that was a great game.. at the start, i know its going to be BEDA’s game.. because they came from an intensive training and based on the lineup, nobody could match sam ekwe.. but ue shows the meaning of a warrior and dicdatated most of the game (maybe fatigue is crawling to the Red lions due to training) but hats off to the Red lions for winning the game…

actually i was impressed with pascual but the most umpressive during that game (or maybe the hero of the game) would be lanete.. off the bench and scored 13pts.. if my memory is ryt, he came during the 3rd qtr, when the Red Lions are downed and he started the comeback.. well, it comes from the blood..( i know that he is the younger brother of the purefoods player, chico lanete, am i right?)

hands down also to Pong escobal, who made the shot when the SBC badly needs a points..

@redredred, from what i know, udo had to attend to his ailing father. he had to cut short his u.s. aib training and flew directly to nigeria from the states. hopefully, he’ll be back in time for the remaining matches of san beda in filoil and nsl.
