The Bulldogs is finally learning how to win in close games.  Marc Joseph Berry could not afford another extension as he guided the National University Bulldogs to a 94-92 overtime win over the College of Saint Benilde Blazers after scoring “the” shot that mattered most last May 21, 2008 at The Arena in San Juan City .

With the score tied at 92-all, Jesus Garcia tried to knock down a game-winning triple. Thanks to a Berry follow with 1.1 seconds to go, the Bulldogs escaped with a win in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Invitational Cup.

“I felt the jitters. I have to admit it, said NU coach Manny Dandan. “Thanks to my players for playing tough today. I just told them to give their best even without our star players. I’m happy they responded well.

Coach Manny Dandan was referring to Edwin Asoro, who is currently playing for Harbour Centre in the PBL finals against Hapee Toothpaste in Batangas City .

Berry and Raymond Aguilar both scored 20 points, while Garcia tallied 19 points as the Bulldogs established a 2-3 slate in Group A to keep their flickering quarterfinal hopes alive.

Dave Catamora and Jewel Ponferado merged for 16 points for the Bulldogs.

The Blazers fell to 2-3 in Group B, but with still two games to play, they will most likely secure the no. 4 spot in their bracket to advance to the quarterfinal round if they will win one of their two remaining games.

Robbie Manalac, had 11 points, hit a game-tying trey with 8.3 seconds to go in overtime for a 92-all count.

The game almost went to another overtime when Garcia muffed a three-pointer, but Berry was there to save the day for the Bulldogs.

Benilde’s William Johnston scored on a lay up with 9.2 seconds left to tie the count at 77-all and the Bulldogs failed to score from their possession that eventually led to the extension period.

The Bulldogs actually led by as many as nine, 51-40, midway in the third quarter, but the Blazers charged back behind Garri Sevilla, with 11 of his 14 points down the stretch to put CSB to within striking distance, 49-51.

Berry and Aguilar conspired to a 9-0 run to push the Bulldogs back in front, 68-59, early in the fourth quarter. Aaron Umlas led CSB with 24 points.

Individual Scores:

NU (94) – Aguilar 20, Berry 20, Garcia 19, Catamora 8, Ponferado 8, Baloran 5, Dela Cruz 5, Luy 3, Magat 2, Galapon 2, Tungcul 1.

Di ba CSB is at 2-3? But I dont know what Mapua’s standing is, sabi sa isang article nyo, 4-3 na sila. Hindi ba 3-3? And if CSB wins one game in the next 2, hindi ba contradictory yan sa above statement because magiging tied lang sila with Mapua provided tha Cards lose their next games? Pls shed some light. Im seriously confused.
