JRU wipes out Altas

Despite the fact that they could no longer make it to the eight-team quarterfinals in their present situation, the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers have stayed aggressive in the second Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Invitational Cup.

The JRU Heavy Bombers showed their superiority over winless Perpetual Help Altas, 83-55, last May 19, 2008 for their only second victory in six-game at The Arena in San Juan City.

Ariel Vanguardia admitted that the team have been struggling since the start of the tournament. “We were struggling earlier in the tournament, said JRU coach Ariel Vanguardia. “Because there are players who did not play due to their commitment to other leagues, but in the NCAA we’ll be fine.

Forward James Sena scored 24 points to lead JRU, while Marvin Hayes finished with a double-double - 10 points and 14 rebounds- and Marc Terence Cagoco had 11 points as the Heavy Bombers ended the elimination round with 2-4 card.

That record is not enough to get a slot in the eight-team quarterfinal round. The Altas ended the elimination with no win in six games.

JRU soared high in the early going, with Sena firing 8 points, including a three-point play off a Ronald Reyes foul, to establish an insurmountable 16-2 lead with 2:08 minutes left in first quarter.

JRU was ahead at the start of second quarter, 18-8.

Ronald Reyes, who scored 13 points for the Altas, erupted for 10 points and Mark Kong scored 7 of his 9 points in the second quarter to reduce the Heavy Bombers’ advantage by halftime, 35-29. Franz Dysam had 16 points to lead Perpetual.

Nchotu John Njei led a 15-2 run in the third quarter that put JRU ahead, 62-44, at the start of the last quarter.

The defense of the Heavy Bombers held-off the Altas to only 4 points in the last four minutes of the third quarter. And they coasted to an 18-point spread, 70-52, early in the fourth quarter.
Individual Scores:

JRU (83) – Sena 24, Cagoco 11, Hayes 10, Pradas 9, Bulangis 8, Nocom 7, Matute 6, Njei 5, Montemayor 3,

Perpetual (55) — Dysam 14, Reyes 13, M. Kong 9, Balboa 8, Salanga 5, Vivero 2, Petilos 2.

Quarter Scores : 18-8, 35-29, 62-44, 83-55.

@Christian, I honestly still don’t get it. Well, we can leave it as it is. Nobody cares about it other than the insolent people around. But thanks too for the FYI. =)

    Gibberish indeed.

According to one of JRU’s school officials, the hopia factory story is a myth. The present location of the JRU campus along Shaw Blvd. was bombed by Japanese fighter pilots during World War II, thus the monicker Bombers.

As for the hopia nickname, JRU was the only co-ed school among the six teams, or “Old-Timer Six,” that figured prominently in NCAA play in the 70s (the other five being San Beda, Ateneo, DLSU, Letran and Mapua). Thus, the name “hopia.”

@GoBlue, thanks for a piece of information and yes, absolutely, what’s the fuss about that?! It’s quite hard to deal with these balderdash statements.

I read something about that hopia thing. JRU’s location daw is formerly a hopia factory. Well, really doesn’t make any sense na asarin sila with hopia for whatever reason. Children’s fight.

I’m not sure what HOPIA and BALUT have something to do with JRU. Maybe I’m just being slow and I don’t care. Hehe.. It’s tiring to see these absurd comments. Sad to note some of us here are acting like idiots. If we can show that we’re educated that would be much appreciated!!!

tigilan na natin ang puro paninira, at kalimutan na natin ang nakaraan at tuunan na lang natin ng pansin and pre season tournaments at darating na NCAA season. at idaan na lang sa basketball ang laban.
