Jazul on target as Letran keep UP winless

A new attitude won’t change any of it. The Fighting Maroons are still winless. Rafael Jazul delivered the finishing kick for Colegio San Juan de Letran to tame the University of the Philippines’ huge rally.
Jazul fired-off 11 of his 19 points as the Knights stopped the UP Fighting Maroons, 70-61, to claim their second win in three outings last May 19, 2008 in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Invitational Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.
“It was great. I never expect UP to comeback but we were ready to stop them,” said Jazul, who sparked the Knights’ 13-3 attack by hitting a triple with 7:41 minutes left in the last quarter for a 60-48 lead. “My teammates stepped up and did their roles.”, Jazul added.
Letran Knights, with three play dates on their schedule, squandered an eight point lead, 30-22, early in the third quarter as the Fighting Maroons unleashed a 20-16 run to narrow the gap to 42-43 at the start of last quarter.
Rey Guevarra, a PBL veteran playing for Bacchus, stepped up also in the thirdquarter, as he scored 10 of his game-high 21 points plus 4 assists to help the Knights bury the Fighting Maroons to a 0-6 slate.
Jazul and Cabonce led Letran’s fourth quarter 27-19 assault to seal the game. Kojak Melegrito had 9 points for Letran.
Jay Agbayani led UP with 16 points, while Paul Sorongon added 13 points and Martin Reyes settled for 12 points.
Both teams played excellent defense by applying continuous pressure at the back court. Letran College finished the first quarter ahead by a slim margin, 17-14, but by halftime it was close at 27-22 with both teams combining for 19 second quarter points.
Individual Scores:
Letran (70) – Guevarra 21, Jazul 19, Melegrito 9, Cabonce 6, Foronda 5, Ranises 3, Cortez 3, Gutilban 2, Dangcal 2,
UP (61) – Agbayani 16, Sorongon 13, Reyes 12, Co 5, Dela Victoria 3, Sison 3, Hipolito 3, Gamboa 2, Astorga 2, Marfori 2.
Quarter Scores: 17-13, 27-22, 43-42, 70-61

About time Rey Guevarra showed some offense. Like UE’s Espiritu, he’s another slam-dunker who showed inconsistency on offense in the past. He needs to be more consistent this time, though
Really tough luck for the UP Maroons in the Fil-Oil Tournament without Mike “The Shelter” Silungan. I hope they don’t end up winless in this tournament
