Leo Austria has made a strong statement for the coming UAAP Season: Beware.
Veteran Paul Gonzalgo displayed impeccable three-point shooting in the fourth while Eric Canada took the leadership role as Adamson University Falcons posted an inspiring 73-63 victory over Far Eastern University Tamaraws last May 19, 2008 at The Arena in San Juan City.
Gonzalgo, with 17 points, torched the Tamaraws in the fourth quarter by hitting 3-of-3 from beyond the three-point line and hand FEU its first loss after five games in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Invitational Cup.
“When I made my first shot, I became more confident,” said Gonzalgo, a four-time veteran. “It is good that my other teammates responded to the challenge. We knew FEU will be hard to beat but we were ready.”
Playmaker Eric Canada, scoring 21 points and dished out 6 assists, with Alex Nuyles were the initiators of Adamson’s first quarter assualt by nailing 9 points and give them an 18-7 advantage with 1:27 minutes to go.
FEU salvaged the lead by halftime, 33-29 with a remarkable comeback by unleashing a 22-11 run. Benedict Fernandez scored all of his 6 points in the second period to help FEU.
Adamson University attempted to snatch back the lead, with Gonzalgo hitting a trey while Galinato converted on four field goal atempts to get a 45-44 lead, before John Ramos of FEU finished a three-point play with 18 seconds left to get the lead back, 47-44.
Canada reduced the deficit to 46-47 after making two charities with only a second left before the final quarter.
Down 46-49 in the early going of the final period, the Falcons ignited a blazing 14-3 burst capped by Gonzalgo’s first three-pointer to give Adamson a 60-52 cushion with 4:38 minutes left. From there, the Falcons just traded baskets with the Tamaraws and were comfortable with their margin.
“It’s a good win for us. Beating a team like FEU gives us some confidence,” said returning Adamson head coach Leo Austria. “Also a morale booster for the coming UAAP. This is also a strong statement that we are prepared to beat any team.”
Rookie Alex Nuyles had 10 points, mostly highlights and a three-pointer in the fourth period, while Jan Julius Colina added 9 points. The win catapulted Adamson to four straight wins in five games(4-1).
Adamson’s next opponent will be the De La Salle Green Archers on May 28 (Wednesday).
