Mapua’s highly-spirited comeback denied by Espiritu

The Mapua Cardinals forced the game into overtime when Allan Mangahas scored on a three-pointer to tie the game at 80-all thus erasing a huge deficit in the final quarter. But the high-leaping Elmer Espiritu had other things in mind in the extension period.
6-foot-3 forward Espiritu erupted for 8 of his personal high 29 points in overtime as the University of the East Red Warriors thwarted the Mapua Cardinals’ highly-spirited comeback to score a 99-95 overtime win last May 12, 2008.
With the Red shirts crowd going nuts at The Arena in San Juan City, Espiritu made the noise even louder after scoring six straight baskets that put the UE Red Warriors to a commanding 89-81 advantage with 2:46 minutes to go in overtime.
The Cardinals stormed back with an 8-4 attack, behind Allan Mangahas and Ian Chris Mazo, to trim the gap to 87-93 in the final 1:31 minutes. But Espiritu answered with a lay-in for a 95-87 lead to keep the Cardinals.
“I’m just lucky today,” said Espiritu, who is dreaming to make it in the PBA soon just like fellow Red Warriors Ronald Tubid, James Yap, and KG Canaleta, among others. “I made it a point to be aggressive and take charge because Marcy is not here.”
Marcy Arellano did not play because of his commitment to PBL Team - Burger King and currently playing in Baguio City.
Mapua’s Ian Mazo, who recorded probably the league’s highest output by an individual player, scored 34 points, 8 in the overtime period, but had limited support from his teammates.
“The players are awesome despite the Cardinals impressive shooting,” said UE coach Dindo Pumaren. “We played good defense but our opponent was really determined. I’m happy somebody like Espiritu stepped up in the game.”
Narciso Llagas supported Espiritu with 26 points, lanky Hans Thiele added 8 points, while Rudy Lingganay and Lucas Tagarda chipped for 7-points.
Rookie Paul Christian Zamar had 6 crucial points — all three-pointers – to keep the Red Warriors afloat in the fourth quarter.
It was a nip and tuck affair althrougout the 1st half with the Cardinals exploiting UE’s late reaction on defense that triggered Mapua’s transition attack. The Red Warriors would use its patented trapping defense to regain the momentum but it wasn’t enough to solve the Cardinals’ incorigibility in the regulation period. With the win, the Warriors climbed to 3-0 in Group A, while the Cardinals slid to 3-3 in Group B.
Allan Mangahas poured in 12 points for Mapua, while Jonathan Banal scored 11 points and 5 assists and Neil Pascual had 11 points.
Individual Scores:
UE (99) – Espiritu 29, Llagas 26, Thiele Lingganay 7, Tagarda 7, Zamar 6, Martinez 5, Bandaying 4, Acuna 2, Etrone 2, Alabanza 1.
Mapua (95) – Mazo 34, Mangahas 12, Banal 11, N. Pascual 11, Cornejo 10, J. Pascual 2, Acosta 2, Dela Pena 2, Soriano 2.
Quarter Scores: 20-21, 48-43, 67-59, 80-80 (OT) 99-95

Nice win for my team. Nice game for Elmer Espiritu after he was thrown out last game against (mayabang na team sa UAAP) La Salle. SO is Mr. Llagas who also doing wonders for the team. Against La Salle sya yung nagpanalo with his tip-in shot at ngayon naman he contributed 26 pts. The guards also have moments to share … James, Paul, Lucas and Rudy. GO UE RED WARRIORS …

Mas mabilis ang UE ngayon at maraming deadly sa shooting. Hindi pa nakapaglaro si Paul Lee dahil injury, nawalan ang UE ng slasher sa loob kaya dumidikit ang La Salle. Kung nasubaybayan nyo ang laro ng UE after UAAP … wala pa silang talo up to now from Father Martin cup to HAIL then now at sa Nike summer league. Champion sila sa Fr Martin at sa HAIL. Soon sa Nike and this tournament. GO UE Warriors GO.”
They were the champions last season…

Mayabang is a general term … like what you you’ve said na hindi dapat lahatin. Thanks … atleast may nagrebuke sa akin … okay lang … ang maganda buhay ang mundo ng basketball, … yung time ni la James Yap, hindi ko makakalimutan yun especially si Artadi, you know what I mean against Ateneo. Malas yung tandem nila sa UE at that time.

I’m an avid fan of San Antonio Spurs and Tim Duncan is my one and only favorite player ko sa NBA. The best talaga! Right now the series even with 2-2 a piece. Sana manalo sila bukas sa New Orleans. Thanks!

Elmer Espiritu needs to keep playing at this high a level for him to become a serious prospect for the PBA either next season, or the next next season.
