Far Eastern University flexed enough muscles to rout National University, 69-54, to register its fourth straight win last May 12, 2008 in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.
Veteran Benedict Fernandez scored 12 points, mostly from the three-point area, while Andy Mark Barroca tallied 11 points and 7 assists, and Jens Dieter Knuttel added 7 points to give the Tamaraws a 4-0 record. Reil Cervantes also had 8-points for FEU.
“We just need to do it right from the start,” said FEU coach Glenn Capacio, referring to their performance in the first half. “NU is not 100 percent because most of their players are in Baguio City playing in the PBL.”
NU, playing without Harbour Centre stars Jonathan Fernandez and Edwin Asoro, dropped to a 1-3 slate after losing three straight games.
After a short 18-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, the FEU Tamaraws banked on their hardnosed defense to eventually outscore the Bulldogs in the second quarter on the way to a 39-22 halftime lead.
The FEU Tamaraws sustained their scoring rampage in the second half with several 20-point advantages.
Fernandez’s triple gave the Tamaraws an insurmountable 67-47 lead in the final 5:15 minutes en route to a convincing victory.
The NU Bulldogs had 12 points from Raymund Aguilar and 9 from Aaron Galapon, fell to 1-3 in Group A.
