Since Gee Abanilla came to Saint Benilde, exactly four months ago, the College of Saint Benilde Blazers have finally embraced, well hopefully, a winning attitude.

Abanilla and his College of Saint Benilde Blazers lost to UE and Ateneo, but the preseaons is not over yet, there maybe more victims to come.

Last May 12, 2008, the CSB Blazers buckled up and surpassed the gritty challenge of the San Sebastian College Golden Stags with an 84-74 victory in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.

“We’ve learned from those two losses and the boys are improving well,” said Abanilla, an assistant with the Red Bull Barakos in the PBA. “I just need to be patient. Who knows? Some things might happen not only in this league but also on our way to Season 84.”

College of Saint Benilde took advantage the absence of Jim Viray and Jason Ballesteros, both playing for Burger King in the PBL, to take a 21-10 start.

With John Paul Raymundo and Ian Delgado hitting clutch baskets, the Golden Stags refused to give up early and reduced the deficit by halftime, 30-38.

But the Blazers’ determination prevailed by unleashing a superb 8-0 start to increase their edge, 46-30 with 6:17 minutes to go in the third period. The Stags responded with a quick 12-0 counter to trim the deficit to 46-42 with 1:56 miutes left.

Harvey Porras’ three-point play sparked the Blazers’ 6-1 run to close the third quarter and stay ahead, 52-43.

Angelo Montecastro, kept Saint Benilde on track, as he racked up 13 of his game-high 19 points in the final period. Keith Sevilla established 8 points in the 4th quarter on the way to duplicate his game high 19 points to bury the Stags to a 2-4 slate.

After marking an 80-70 lead in the last 2:44 minutes, the Blazers milked the clocke and matched the Golden Stags’ four baskets with less than 2 minutes left in the game and improve their record to 2-2. Harvey Porras had 15 points and 5 rebounds for the Blazers.

Dave Najorda led the Golden Stags with 17 points, while Jimbo Aquino and John Paul Raymundo added 12 points apiece forSan Sebastian, currently playing for Harbour Centre Head Coach Jorge Gallent in Baguio City.

CSB – 84: Sevilla 19, Montecastro 19, Porras 15, David 6, Umlas 6, Johnston 5, Morial 5, Manlapaz 4, Manalac 3, Dalanon 2.

Guys, let’s not criticize CSB because of their standing in the past seasons of NCAA. If you all come to think of it, NCAA is composed of different sports that will determine the best among the participating schools. Just to give you a recap, CSB was the overall champion of NCAA season 83. I guess that says it all. despite the Blazers’ dreadful performance in basketball, we still managed to make it to the top.Animo Benilde!

@Get_Blazed, David really is a bit of a tweener because he’s long but seems more of a natural three with his outside shooting. one big who isn’t on this year’s squad is layug who had a pretty decent mid range game. di ko lam ba’t wala na siya. di ako nagpopost sa PEX or gameface e. only here and sometimes basketballexchange.
