Letran diverted Perpetual’s 4th Quarter storm

Louie Alas looked comfortable. Even though the victory of Letran College against the University of Perpetual Help Dalta System last April 30, 2008 was close, Alas finally had a relief – for now.

The Knights overcame a fourth quarter rally by the Altas to prevail with a 63-59 win and earn their first victory in the Fil-Oil Flying Pre Season Invitational Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.

Guard Reymark Gutilban, scattered 11 points, delivered a three-point play and finished with a lay up inside the last two-minute mark to save the Knights from another disastrous finish and finally making it at the win column after losing their debut game last Monday against Saint Benilde, 71-64.

“It is nice to get back and win again, said Alas, a multi-titled NCAA Letran mentor. “But I really need to tell my players again and again that we should play defense all-throughout the game. Earlier, we almost lost control, but we recovered just in time.

Big man John Foronda also had 11 points, while guard Rey Guevarra and forward Dino Daa, collared 16 rebounds, merged for 16 points to hand the Knights a 1-1 slate and push the Altas to the cellar with 0-4 record.

The Altas threatened to pull the rug from under the Letran Knights when they finally took the lead 57-56, after a trey by John Philip Galabin, with only 3:02 minutes remaining.

But after a minute-long drought, Gutilban buried his own trey that ignited a 7-2 run capped by another triple by Kojack Melegrito with time down to 18 seconds.

The Altas failed to score a basket for the final count. Letran took a 50-47 count with 2:11 minutes left. But Galabin quickly tied the game with a trey early in the fourth quarter to make it 50-all.

Raffy Ynion had 11 rebounds on top of his 11 points for his second double-double performance, while Rommel Balboa added 16 points and Galabin chipped in for 12 points for the Altas.
