Buenafe and Reyes save Blue Eagles from disastrous finish

Incoming freshman Ryan Buenafe finally showed up when it mattered most as the Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles survived a dangerous comeback by Saint Benilde Blazers, 76-72, last April 30, 2008 in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Cup at The Arena in San Juan City .The Ateneo crowd at the arena could not believe what they saw when the Blazers started to crawl thier way back into the game.

“We collapsed in the fourth quarter and nearly lost the game, said Ateneo head coach Norman Black. “I’m surprised Saint Benilde is starting to mature since Gee (Abanilla) took the coaching job three months ago.

The Blue Eagles, relying heavily on Rabeh Al-Hussaini’s inside game, outscored the Blazers in the first quarter, 27-13, and eventually controlled the first half, 43-26, with Buenafe providing some offense.

But the Blazers, injected by Abanilla’s never-say-die attitude, did not surrender easily as Aaron Umlas delivered 10 of his 12 points in the third quarter, including three straight baskets, to trim down the Blue Eagles lead to 51-56 at the start of the final quarter.

Saint Benilde outplayed Ateneo in the third quarter, 25-13.

Both teams traded baskets in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, keeping the score close thrice just under the last three-minute mark (68-65), (70-68) and (74-72).

Gary Sevilla, who got 11 points for the Blazers, attempted to steal the limelight with 8.2 seconds remaining, when he fired an open trey but was off the mark.

Saint Benilde fouled Blue Eagles’ Jai Reyes and Chris Tiu and sent them to the free throw line making both thier charity opportunities to peg the final count.

Buenafe scored 6 of his 17 points in the last quarter, while Tiu fired 5 of his 14 points to calm down the Blazers’ scoring rampage in the last period.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini had 17 points in the first quarter and Nonoy Baclao had 11 rebounds. Ateneo improved its record to 3-2 while Saint Benilde dropped to 1-2. Harvey Poras led the Blazers with 13 points

Ateneo 76: Al-Hussaini 17, Buenafe 17, Tiu 14, Buenafe 12, Reyes 7, Long 6, Chua 4, Baclao 3, Baldos 3, Escueta 3, Austria 2.

CSB 72: Porras 13, Umlas 12, Sevilla 11, David 8, Morial 8, Manalac 7, Montecastro 6, Dalanon 5, Manlapaz 2

Quarter Scores: 27-13, 43-26, 56-51, 76-72

Ouch, painful defeat. Atleast no more blowout games this year. Good luck to their next game nalang. I still believe we are in better shape this year.

Sana mas makita na yung significant improvement. Keep fighting! Faith in the Flame. ANIMO BENILDE!

74-72.. i mentioned it already… Hindi naman siya patalo kasi he needs to take the shot kasi paubos na yung shot clock nila…

Malakas lang talaga kaya tumalbog… kung pumasok yun iyak ang mga naka asul…

With Ateneo up by 4 with 8 secs. to go, the Blazers were late to set-up in their front court. Sevilla’s only option was to hoist a quick 3, it had a straight line but it just on top of the front rim.

Sevilla could’ve given the Ateneo crowd some scare from an expected blow out. But then again, the Blazers crawled back into the game from a huge deficit. This is a great sign that the players are buying into Coach Abanilla’s system.

the blazers were down 20 in the first quarter, 17 at halftime then they surged back and cut the deficit at to 1. they just couldn’t get over the hump. to say na patalo yung isang player is totally unfair, and negates the team effort that brought them back in a game that was a blowout in the first half. the biggest surprise for me with how csb is playing is, not only have they greatly improved but that the opposing team realize that and really can’t believe it. it was the same in the last game against letran. csjl and admu are established teams in their respective leagues and benilde gave them a run for their money. csb may not be a top-tier team yet, but they’re getting there.

i watched the game live and i was really impressed how benilde was able to give ateneo a scare. the blazers played great in the 2nd half and i can truly say that you better watch out for them in the upcoming season of the NCAA.

Go Ateneo! ONE BIG FIGHT! :D

^ I hope you don’t take it that hard. we have a saying that goes “Rome wasn’t built in three days.”, you can’t expect a team to emerge from the bottom of the standings in such a short time. They will improve in the long run. Let’s hope the Blazers mature by the time the next NCAA season starts. Goodluck Benilde. :)

I agree with Redx3. At least you can see the players’ change in attitude. Unlike the last moments of Coach Garcia’s time, he was totally tuned out. This is a great start for the Blazers so far.

^^Again, the “Get_Blazed” who commented May 1, 2008 at 12:47 was not me.

I hope the site maintenance could prevent people using different email addresses to use the same name. Defamatory yan sa character ko. Again, I have always believed in Benilde no matter win or lose. Even if you traced for the email address and the IP Address of that dupe who tried to use my name, you will be able to prove that he’s a fake. Even the way he types, “i was not impressed,, still we lost..” Was not similar to how I express my thoughts at all. Truth be told I was very impressed with CSB’s performance vs. UE even if we lost by 21 points. I saw passion and perseverance and the will to win in them. I hope this ends here. Wala nalang gamitan ng pangalan, nakakabastos na e.

Also, I do not suggest that Sevilla was the one who lost the game for us, I was clearly asking the situation when he attempted that shot. Hope I clear my name here.

@redredred and sir Mike, you would see how much I rally fellow Benildeans and tell them to be patient and wait for our time. This dupe who uses my name clearly wants to make me look bad. I am all praises to the new-look Blazers. Thanks.

And to the one who uses my name: please stop. Seriously, it aint funny.

@manalac, Dude, I couldve sworn that I do not suggest that, I was clearly asking the situation. If you would ask people in PEX or gameface.ph how much I support Benilde baka magulat ka. It is not like me to put any player of CSB down. Good luck sa next game, Blazers. ANIMO BENILDE!

Oh yeah. Faith is an International School so most likely Burke will be on the team after grad which is like mid-June. The final 12 roster spots for Ateneo should look like this: Capt: Chris Tiu, Nonoy Baclao, Justin Chua, Kirk Long, Nico Salva, Vince Burke, Ryan Buenafe, Yuri Escueta, Rabah Al-Husseini, Jai Reyes, Eric Salamat and a toss-up between Baldos and Austria.

    Justin Chua > Rabah

Sana kelangan nalang magregister before you can post. Kesa ganito, my credibility is being stained.

“not again, May 4, 2008 11:46am , thats not me. Please stop. again thanks”

    A–hole.
