Blazers scorch Knights

The Knights pounded hard but got beat by the Blazers.
The College of Saint Benilde, coached by new mentor Gee Abanilla, refused to call them a “below-par” collegiate squad starting now in the Flying V Pre Season Invitational Cup.
“It shouldn’t be like that. Other teams must respect us,â€? said Abanilla, after the CSB Blazers outscored the Letran College Knights in the final period to squeeze out a 71-64 come-from-behind win last April 28, 2008 at The Arena in San Juan City. “We should prove our point like what we did today.â€?
Down by 43-51 at the end of third frame, College of Saint Benilde showed character in the last quarter to bounce back from a sluggish third quarter by unleashing a merciless 28-13 run that handed the Blazers their first win in two games.
“I though we almost lost it, but I’m happy the boys have learned how to win,â€? said Abanilla, also an assistant coach in Red Bull in the PBA. “I’m hoping all my players will sustain this kind of game.â€?
Forward Jeff Morial led the Blazers with 11 points, while Jacob Manlapaz collected 13 rebounds and hit 10 markers and Harvey Porras had 10 points.
Morial and Porras merged for 20 points in the final quarter, including the fast break lay up of Porras that pushed the Blazers to a 66-64 lead with 1:12 minutes to go. The Knights could not find a decent shot in the last minute mark while the Blazers had five attempts from the free throw line to peg the final count.
The game was close at first quarter (16-all) and College of Saint Benilde took the halftime lead at 34-36.
Reymar Gutilban led Letran with 14 points with Dino Daa contributing for 12 points. Bryan Foronda and RJ Jazul had 11 points each for the Knights.

He had an altercation with Blazers Point Guard Stephen Santos in the dying minutes of the game. Actually Santos had a good shooting game.
