Suspension extended for PCU?

PCU may not hear the expression ‘welcome back’ from its peers.
After being suspended last season due to players switching identities, the Philippine Christian University Dolphins may possibly not return in all the events of 84th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) this June, 2008. Due to new offenses discovered by the Management Committee on its final investigation, NCAA may extend the suspension against PCU.
A reliable source close to the NCAA, who requested anonymity told inboundpass.com that the Man Com has identified four new players who were guilty of submitting false identities and academic records.
They are junior players Victor Miguel Oliveros, Jundell Navaja, James De Gano and Elvin Jake Pascual under coach Bong Sales. Sales and his coaching staff were all dismissed.
Jaypee Importante, whose real name is Vincent King Importante, was the first player discovered guilty of identity switching last year. He switched his original age 19 to a 16 year old person to allow him eligible to play in the junior division.
With that, NCAA ordered PCU to surrender the junior basketball first runner-up trophy won by the Baby Dolphins and, after one month, the Policy Board suspended PCU for one season in all events.
Paul Supan, chairman of NCAA Man Com, released a statement last March 12, 2008, saying: “The NCAA Policy Board, headed by Vincent K. Fabella of JRU, has arrived at a consensus regarding the issue on PCU.
“But we hope to meet with PCU officials at the soonest possible time before making any announcement.�
The source disclosed the NCAA Policy Board, composed of school presidents, met at the Casino Espanol last March 12, 2008 to discuss the PCU letter, which is a response to the NCAA letter given to them recently.
The response that was sent to the NCAA, according to the source, was that they did not argue on any of the points that were brought out in the NCAA report. They are just asking for “mercy� and understanding.
In a surprise visit by Inboundpass.com, Paul Supan would like to stress that some of the newspapers have misquoted his statements, and as of that time the news of this issue has been released, there has been no official statement on the status regarding PCU’s reinstatement in the league.

That can’t be Get_Blazed. I was a freshman in high school when San Beda won the NCAA 1977-78 season against Ateneo. Trinity was there already.

While the fraud may have been instigted by school officials, the players are equally to blame for allowing such fraud to happen with their consent, more so since they benefitted from it. Alam nilang hindi nalam sila nakatapos ng particular academic level yet they purported that they indeed had.
- these players are high school students and most are minors who are not legally-bound to give their consent. they may have parents that are not intellectually gifted and may be financially strapped. hence they are susceptible to deception thinking that everything is in order and could only think of “rewards” promised them by their finders. i dont believe they deserved to be crucified for it. they should be given the second chance to prove that they indeed meet the age and academic requirements for them to play, and be absolved of any wrongdoing. la salle has paid for that painfully (but at least it admitted that fraud has indeed been committed). others got caught. other schools got away with it. . i wonder then why duncil and ust got away with it. will they ever lived it down?

All players who are parties to the fraudulent activities should NEVER be allowd to play in the NCAA. This is to send a strong message to all and sundry that honesty and integrity are held premium in the league. While the fraud may have been instigted by school officials, the players are equally to blame for allowing such fraud to happen with their consent, more so since they benefitted from it. DISHONESTY and LACK of INTEGRITY should never be tolerated in the NCAA and those players, whether they transfer to San Beda, Letran, Mapua etc. should never be made part of the team. HONESTY and INTEGRITY should reign supreme over any baketball crown. The fiasco suffered by DLSU because of such shenanigans will never be lived down by the school.

As reporters and members of the working press, we have a responsibility to report what we hear. It is not unfair if some names emerge from the surface, primarily because we explicitly state whether or not they’re indeed charged, or just implicated. It is not irresponsible reportage/journalism.
The problem with forums (unlike inboundpass.com) is that the faces hide behind the pseudonyms or threads. Here, we readily show ourselves before all of you in the name of responsible and transparent journalism. You may have stones to throw at us, but the fact remains that we are committed to our craft and not disrespecting or maligning any “kids AND the reading public.”

You’re right there! They should do it as early as now to clear the air and not when the season is about to start. So as not to rock the boat by affirming facts and thrashing out those that are mere speculations, ManCom should call a presscon and announce its decision on PCU’s fate to avoid another mishandling of a case and clarifying “misquotes” from the writers as responsible individuals are now saying. Passing the buck?

i think NCAA MaNCom should come up with a statement as soon as possible regarding to this issue… The PCU’s suspension and what schools will be added for the next NCAA season if PCU will be suspended or remove from the league..

There’s probably malice in their reasons why their names were mentioned. Specifically in the case of Pascual, a talented player who is definitely suiting up for San Beda this season 84. But I don’t think the writers are to be blamed for this. They will, definitely report whatever is fed to them. Blame it on the person/s who have leaked their names. Especially person/s from a school who may have an axe to grind against the reigning school champion. Just trying to read between the lines, dudes!

I consider it irresponsible on the part of the reporter(s) to mention the names of the Junior players involved in PCU’s cheating without actually stating categorically what form of cheating they have been a party to.
Only Importante’s case has been defined. But what about the other players?
Should this episode in their lives as junior ballers be a burden when they move to college, assuming they will have to secure an athletic scholarship to be able to study?
Take the case of Pascual who is now with San Beda.
As shared by a Bedan booster in another forum, the kid was asked to re-enroll as a 3rd year hs student when recruited by PCU. He eventually graduated and PCU gave him his academic credentials which was what Pascual used when he enrolled at San Beda. The fact that he continues to be a student at San Beda this second semester is proof that his hs records are in order. Otherwise, they will not even consider him for inclusion in next season’s NCAA.
But with his name being mentioned in the context of PCU’s suspension due to cheating, what impression does this create in the mind of the public?
The same applies to Victor Miguel Oliveros, Jundell Navaja, and James De Gano.

Baka biktima ang mga iyan at hindi kasangkot.
Kung hindi niyo alam ang involvement nila, hindi na dapat banggitin ang pangalan. What’s worse, anonymous pa ang source! Konting discernment naman for the sake of the kids.
Dahil nabanggit na nga, at the very least, what these reporter(s) can do is make a follow up report defining the involvement of the kids.
Be fair to the kids AND the reading public.
Don’t be irresponsible.

@Major Dude, I stand corrected. Yes, Victorino played for JRU. It was a long time ago. Ateneo had then the quartet of Fritz Gaston, Joy Carpio, Padim Israel and Steve Watson. And my brother’s uncle, Bambi Kabigting.
@Get Blazed, im pretty sure Trinity was part of the NCAA in the 70’s.

@Get_Blazed, Trinity was there already as early as the 70’s. They had been the cellar dweller in all the years they have been with the NCAA.
@The_Big_Cat, Are you sure about it? All the while I thought Victorino played for JRC then.
I think the NCAA should revive and continue on with their plan to expand by introducing Division II and accept the likes of Lyceum, EAC, Centro Escolar, Fatima, Arellano and even STI who are all knocking on NC’s door. Then relegate PCU to division II as a form of punishment for the violations committed. Teams that do well in the second division may end up playing in the 1st division. In this way, they will be doing what should have been done before, develop college basketball.

its good that the ncaa is doing something. unlike in the other league they’re afraid to give punishment to league violators and the only solution they have is to run away with it and hide the truth..
what happened to the duncil case? i guess it just normal to have 2 bc in the uaap. and so many unfinished issue..
and thats what they call culture..

It would be a retro season for the NCAA if Trinity College would return. I recall seing Trinity College had 6′5″ Manny Victorino in my Dad’s old NCAA 76 & 77 Yearbook. Off course, Trinity should prove their competitiveness this past years in order for them to make a comeback.

kahit ata masuspend ulit pcu hindi daw sila aalis sa ncaa…. kaya baka hindi matuloy yung balitang replacement sa pcu… siguro mas maganda kung huwag nalang palitan ng ibang school ang pcu…

We’ve heard is that EAC has the most noise among the candidates mentioned. Former NCAA member Trinity (Stallions) is also a prime candidate.

UA&P for me is a good caliber school to match up the big UAAP schools.. but athleticism of the athletics program of a school is a factor in a NCAA settings.

Instead of kicking out PCU, id rather have them suspended. And add two college teams to the league. St. Francis of Assisi and EAC. Considering the succes of the DE OCAMPO brothers, Ervin Sotto and Cris Pacana in the PBA. And the recent Ronjay Buenafe of EAC. The ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI COLLEGE and EMILIO AGUINALDO COLLEGE are the most competitive collegiate schools outside the NCAA and UAAP.

@Grrr!: though this might be out of context, I am convinced that PCU had done enough damage to the name of the league. I believe that they are guilty of the accusations. Appropriate action must be taken to prevent further defamation to the NCAA.

I say yes to Lyceum and EAC, while I am not particularly keen on Fatima and Arellano. I say why not UA&P too? Maybe we can expand to a 12 team league, right?

But if they are really guilty and acted with malice to put one over the other teams, then they should be booted out of the NCAA. While a single mispresentation may have been the result of misplaced exhuberance to win one for the team, such events on a more widespread scale showns negligence, if ever, on the part of the powers that be, to allow such practices to happen. The league should never condone the duplicitous and malicious acts undertakinga os its member schools. Maybe it’s time to consider CEU or Lyceum as possible replacements.
