A gathering of reputable coaches from the NCAA and UAAP member schools last March 11, 2008 at the Manila Polo Club in Makati City signifies the opening of the FilOil Flying Sports V Preseason Tournament.

15 teams with 15 players each will be divided into 2 groups.

Group A - Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles, Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, Adamson University Falcons, Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, Far Eastern University Tamaraws, San Sebastian College Recoletos Golden Stags, and UAAP Season 70 runner up - the University of the East Red Warriors.

Group B - University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Altas, College of St. Benilde Blazers, National University Bulldogs, University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, UAAP Season 70 Champions - the De La SAlle Green Archers and NCAA Season 83 and Back to Back Champions - the San Beda Red Lions.

Each group will play a single-round elimination to determine the top four teams from each division that will play in the quarterfinals in a 1 vs. 4, 2 vs. 3 knockout towards the semifinals. The semifinalists from each group will again play a knockout game for the Championship round. The tournament will be played under FIBA rules.

Game day will be on April 13, 2008 at the Arena in San Juan. The 1st game will feature a rare meeting between two NCAA founding member schools, Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles vs. the San Beda College, that will somehow rekindle some of the old rivalry they had since their last meeting in 1978. Also on the same day will be a match to look forward to, the De La Salle Green Archers vs. the Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers, because of the of a feud that happened in their last preseason tournament meeting in 2007.

Games will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays for 20 playing days including the quarterfinals, semis and the Championship series. Games will be aired by Solar/Basketball TV in cooperation with IBC 13.

Hindi po ba ang elimination as “crossover”?

I hope the tickets are reasonably priced unlike last year na may kamahalan.

When Solar transferred to Destiny, I found myself missing NBA and PBL (FilOil league, later CNC)games. I was on the verge of foregoing Sky cable but my wife and daughter prevented me from doing so. The programs on Sky were much more to their liking than those offered by Destiny. So I had to accedde to their desires.

Guess what, I seem to have gotten over my addiction to NBA games (since I no longer have the opportunity to follow the on-court happenings). Thus, I’m also no longer hot on buying NBA products because of that.

If NBA enterprises want to spread the market for NBA (and its attendant products), they should consider the cable provider with the biggest reach–and that’s Sky.

I’m no longer an NBA fanatic because of the transfer of Solar, the NBA carrier to Destiny. That is a BIG substraction to the NBA viewership. Of course, I’ll probably still watch the playoffs on ABC 5, the free channel.

The transfer of Solar to Destiny ends up with the NBA losing a big market base. That is downside that hopefully the NBA will correct.

UST withdrew and UE made a late confirmation. Thus the seeding then the re-shuffle. The opening games will be held at the ULTRA.

@Bloody, for what we have heard, the Tigers’ camp is planning for a training trip. They are to focus further in their training. There were also reports stating that UST may not join Nike Summer League too. It appears that we will have to wait until the UAAP Season 71 starts before seeing the tigers in action again.

basketball is my bible, my life, I live, breath and it complete me. Because BTV and SOLAR did something that we viewers, fanatics are the one paying the price of their arrogance and egos, I want to change cable but sky has the channels for everyone, but not for us basketball fanatics. solar, sky reconcile find something that will make your viewers happy, because without us your nothing. Right?
