Let’s get it on with the Merger, No Way – UAAP

Former host, University of Santo Tomas and the other board members of the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) have killed the ‘merger issue’— literally – proposed by BAP-SBP Executive Secretary Patrick Gregorio.
In a statement emailed by UAAP President Fr. Ermito De Sagon last January 7, 2008 to inboundpass.com, the league will continue supporting the basketball development program. However, Fr. De Sagon reiterated that the UAAP is not ready to combine with any other league.
“We are open to proposals of playing for a truly national championship because we have actually been doing that already, UST’s Fr. Ermito de Sagon said. “And it should be held either before or after our season.
The previous National Collegiate Champions League is the only popular annual national championship tournament so far, where the best teams of UAAP and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) plus other collegiate leagues from around the archipelago play against each other.
De Sagon said the UAAP is not ready to give up its tradition. “But for us to lose our identity, history and tradition as a league (by agreeing to a merger), I don’t think we (UAAP member schools) are ready to part with that.
The UAAP board, with all eight schools attending, held a meeting in UST to discuss the reports that have been published last month regarding the “merger plan between the UAAP and NCAA.
The Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahan ng Basketbol sa Pilipinas (BAP-SBP), from other news reports the other day, has said it is ready to award cash prizes for the national champion if the merger plan pushes through.
The UAAP, De Sagon said, has allowed its players to play for a national cause, whenever called upon. But the UAAP board members said playing in a “combined league with the NCAA would not really mean the discovery of new talents for a national cage team.
“And besides, we are also available to lend our players coming from other sports, not just basketball, said De Sagon, who received a copy of the SBP proposal during the meeting.
University of the Philippines Chancellor Dr. Sergio Cao also denied any talk of a merger, although Gregorio approached them last year and brought the idea of the UAAP and NCAA playing against each other.
“But there was never any talk of a merger, said Cao of UP - the UAAP host school next season.
Stories of the “merger issueâ€? first appeared after Gregorio’s conversation with Cao about the possible event to highlight the Centennial Celebration of the university this year.

@itsme,
Grrr!

no doubt that UAAP is the more exciting and stronger league - no need to rub it in. except for the lions’, knights’,dolphins’ and bombers’ supporters , the rest of the league’s school supporters are hardly around during their teams’games to give support.

FACE IT!

i would definitely love to see the merger of UAAP and NCAA but unfortunately i may have to give up my support for my ncaa team and give it to my current school on their encounter,,,hehe…all of the comments here are so serious…hehe…
anyhow, yeah i dont think that it has something to do with identity and whatsoever…but more of an exciting games among the participating schools…
and not just that…they should also give opportunity to schools who are already ripe to compete in such competitions…
on the other hand, i wonder where would the venue be…araneta might not be able to accommodate everyone…
to end this up, they should try to reconsider the suggestion raised.

NCAA has withstood the test of time. NCAA will always be NCAA! UAAP will always be UAAP! History of the NCAA will never fade! NCAA’s contribution to the history of basketball in the Philippines will never be gone. NCAA will always be NCAA!

why is there even an issue of which league is better? is this a case of my ball is bigger than yours?
i just really do not understand the dyre need to prove oneself (uaap vs ncaa and vice versa)
its just a different league. get over it people. besides, dont we already have the Champion’s League? isnt that enough for everybody yet?
question: where will all the profit from this so called merged league go??? why is this being pushed so adamantly?

i think one thing that a lot of people have seemed to forget is if we have a merged tournament, this would mean more games and a longer season.. yes, yes, this would mean more profit, im sure… but has anybody thought of the student-athletes’ sake? how much time would these kids have for studying? i was a uaap athlete too in my time and I know how much time and energy not just the season but the training for the season takes.
please let students be students!
