The Eagles have landed, face Green Lancers in finals

From Growling Tigers to crying kittens. The Eagles? broken no more.
Chris Tiu and Clifford Arao assured last November 26, 2007 to send Ateneo to the Flying V National Collegiate Champions League finals after routing UST, 92-66, in their final four match-up at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Blue Eagles will meet the team from down south, the UV Green Lancers, in the finals on November 28 at same venue.
After a 0-7 start, the Blue Eagles were never the same in the succeeding minutes.
Tiu, proving his worth after his inclusion in the RP-Harbour team, exploited UST’s lack of effort on defense by knocking down 15 of his 19 points in first half built on a 4-of-7 shooting clip for a 40-28 spread by the halftime break.
Ateneo stayed scorching in the third period, 23-20, to keep its huge advantage, 63-48, toward the last period, where UST came only within 10 thrice, 53-63, 55-65 and 57-67.
6-foot-5 Clifford Arao did most of the damage in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of his 17 points, including back-to-back stabs to provide the Blue Eagles a huge 78-60 margin with 5:15 minutes left in the game.
Point guard Yuri Escueta created the Blue Eagles’ largest lead, 81-60, with 4:02 minutes to go, when he made a fast break lay up.
Then, Ateneo, after five tries in the tournament, will possibly win its first-ever National Champions League title.
Actually, it was a blessing in disguise for Ateneo and UST as 70th UAAP finalist La Salle and University of the East did not join the annual event organized by former PBA chairman Rey Gamboa.
“We’ve watched them play San Beda and it was a very physical game, said Ateneo mentor Norman Black, who is looking for his first collegiate title as coach. “The credit goes to all my hardworking players.
“We played them tough too because you can’t really play them soft otherwise you’re not going to get the calls.
The game plan of the Blue Eagles was to control Jervy Cruz and the lead Growling Tiger had only 8 points and 11 boards and the credit was due to the stingy defense by Arao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Nonoy Baclao.
“We couldn’t stop Jervy Cruz but we were able to limit his game, that helped us a lot, said Black.
The win was the Eagles’ third straight over the 2006 UAAP champions since Ateneo bested UST in the second round and the stepladder games in the UAAP a few months ago.
Center Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Kirk Long contributed 13 points each.
Ateneo, benefited on the 21 turnovers of UST, gaining 23 points on turnovers. The Blue Eagles only committed 11.
Ateneo recorded 28-out-of-63 (44%) total field goals against the 28-of-73 (38%) of UST. dylan Ababou led UST with 22 points and Martin Mirza had 14.
Individual scores:
ATENEO 92–Tiu 19, Arao 17, Al-Hussaini 13, Long 13, Barracoso 9, Escueta 8, Monfort 5, Baclao 4, Baldos 2, Austria 2, Sumalinog 0.
UST 66–Ababou 22, Mirza 14, Allera 13, Cruz 8, Canlas 4, Cuan 3, Espiritu 2, Soriano 0, Basa 0, Badua 0, Gile 0, Taylor 0, Dizon 0, Cortez 0.
Quarter scores: 17-11, 40-28, 63-48, 92-66

I saw the game and the Tigers fangs got extracted. Only Jarencio had the fire. Jervy played a lack luster game and Mirza was shooting bricks. Japs was unlucky with his three point bombs. This was because the Eagles’defense was impeccable.
Both teams played rough but not dirty.
I think the Tigers’ minds were not in the game. They propbabaly thought the game would be a walk in the park like their previous game.

That’s a good description of what really transpired during the game. Let’s pray that another UAAP team may grab the crown this year. ANIMO ATENEO!

a disparity in free throws attempted (and hence fouls called) doesn’t always translate to unfair referees as you seem to be suggesting so readily Richard.
Free throws attempted is also an indicator of aggressiveness.
and if you watched the game, UST was definitely lackluster as previously mentioned in this discussion and Ateneo was very much aggressive and it was the team that had more energy.
You have to factor also that Jervy had an unspirited performance and the rest of the UST squad prefers to shoot from the outside while the Ateneo offense is generally interior oriented with the exception of Tiu.

arrogance? it has never been our game. Both of our teams didn’t go in the finals in the recent UAAP season. Nothing to make a big fuss about this game actually. A loss is a loss and I accept that! In my previous post, I have admitted our team played so bad in this game. They didn’t play smart basketball. Too many nonsense fouls, poorly executed plays and lousy defense. Japs ran like a clueless rat nowhere to go. Jervy’s presence was not felt that much. Tigers had an absent minded game causing a miserable defeat under the claws of the eagles. I knew it, despite losing the game, we’re still going to hear ‘name-calling’ from some of the blue crowd such as you if you are a real atenista. We have established our own collegiate basketball supremacy in the league and that’s a proven fact. We’ve been named as General Champions for Nth time and still counting but you never heard anyone from us flaunting about it and I don’t care to be honest. We still savor that very sweet victory we had against your team at season 70 even if you think it was just a fluke! cmon! Having Doug, Macky and JC on your squad with a very noted former PBA Coach calling the shots for your team?! - do I now deserve to be called Arrogant? LoL! Anyway, good luck on you game later against UV. I hope your team (again if you are a real atenista) wins.

addicted to blue.. do you think winning two in a row to grab the championship in season 69 was a fluke?! two in a row?! fluke?! labo nun!!! common sense man!
bitter ka lang kc di nyo nakuha yung title! sige, sabihin natin na nilaglag nyo kami last season 70, but did you get the crown? wala din naman e!
stupid ang tigers? wats ur basis? think first before spitting anything from your mouth. pwede cguro stupid kami for not beating a more stupid team like the eagles. :)
ateneo has two foreign players in laterre and long plus a multi-titled coach in the pba to help win in the uaap. ano nangyari? we beat the hell out of you guys that time and that wasnt a fluke.
review your season 69 history, ust gave ateneo its first loss in the elims which negated ur hopes for a sweep. tapos nung finals game 1 kayo ang naghahabol at you guys won via a brilliant last second play. game 2 we kicked your BIG BLACK ASSES via a 16 point win. and finally in game 3 we made you guys cry like a kid by beating you, AGAIN, in a very dramatic fashion.
now where’s the fluke there?!
addicted to blue, you are so damn STUPID and IGNORANT that you dont know what happened that season!

that we do not know. but the point i want to establish is that our 19th championship was not a fluke like this “miron” addicted to blue is saying. di nga nya alam ang nangyari nung taon na yun e! atenista ka ba talaga addicted? o bigla ka na lang sumali sa usapan na to for the sake of seeing your name here?!

after reading your post, I need to correct myself. We have beaten the hell out of the Eagles in SEASON 69 and not in Season 70! Darn! Simple math! LoL!
Good point you have there. Also, just to add your insight on season 69, if my memory tells it right, we ended second to the last at the start of the eliminations. We landed at #3 spot after winning a pivotal game against ADU before the final four started. We had to beat the warriors twice in order for us to get into the finals which we successfully did. For the very first time, the blue and yellow collided in finals. First game was stolen from us by a buzzer beater shot. We stood up and fought harder on the succeeding games. The 2nd was a massacre and the last game was the sweetest as we were able to snatch the crown and named as champions.
Addicted to blue…
beating your team in the finals for the very first time on a very first occasion simply states that we’re really destined to win that championship knowing the hardships we went through as I have stated above, clearly it’s not a fluke! Something that is not debatable.. at all! And we just made another history listed on one of the chapters in the UAAP book..
I still wish though that Ateneo’s BLACK MAGIC will finally work with your team later.

A UST-ATENEO issue should not have been brought up only if not because of this low life Addicted to blue. What’s the big fuss about this game?! NOthing! We lost and that’s it! Don’t make our school be part of your growing list of enemies just because of calling us Stupid! What do you call to yourself by the way?? You just made yourself look stupid because of your post.
Move on.. Season 69 was already done. Try your luck again on Season 71, ok?
Focus on your UV game instead later and make the whole UAAP proud of your team again!

blue follower.. read my post first, i said “you damn stupid.” notice the word “YOU?” does “you” mean the whole of ateneo?! i was referring to your arrogant fellow atenean addicted to blue who was the first one who called us stupids! if you were affected by that, then that means you understand why i reacted that way! that was retaliation dude!
all of my comments were cautiously constructed so as not to offend other people here. but by seeing what addicted has posted, do you think i will not get upset at that?!
in addition, please try to read very carefully. take a look at my comments and see if i said that you are low-lifes.
now, did you see any?
again, think first before you spit something from your mouth.
