Visayas sends Mindanao home, clinches F4

Showing that there could only be one best team from the south, University of Visayas drubbed University of Mindanao, 78-58, last November 19, 2007 for a semifinals slot in the Flying V National Collegiate Champions Cup at The Arena in San Juan City .

The Green Lancers, coached by ex-pro Elmer ‘Boy’ Cabahug, cruised to a good start and finished the game convincingly to challenge the winner between FEU Tamaraws and STI College in the semifinals.

“Our height and shooting advantage was practically the keys to this victory aside from our defense,� said Cabahug, who is now looking forward to his next match. “FEU and STI are both competitive, so we’re going to prepare harder.�

Shooting guard Ritchum Dennison put the Green Lancers on a strong start by firing 10 of his 16 points in the opening quarter for an early double-digit advantage, 22-11, which they never relinquished till the end of the game.

University of Visayas continued its dominating ways in the second period, outscoring them, 21-11, for a huge 43-22 halftime advantage.

6-foot-7 Rino Berame piled up 10 of his 14 points in the last quarter – including a dunk that gave UV a 70-48 lead with 3:12 minutes to go – and had 13 rebounds.

Michael Luga and Chris Diputado scored 9 points apiece, while Ariel Mepaña and Von Lanete contributed 8 points each.

UV out-rebounded UM, 53-37, and got more assists (16-15), blocks (6-1) and steals (8-3). The Green Lancers shot 30-out-of-70 (43%) against the Wildcats’ 22-out-of-66 (33%).

Eder Awitin led the Wildcats with 20 points.

    MY FAMILY AND I WERE HAPPY TO HEAR WHEN THE UV “LANCERS� WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP. ALL INFORMATION I’VE HEARD CAME FROM CEBU NEWSPAPER. GUYS I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I SAID. DILI AKO TAGALOG. MY POINT IS WHY THE UV HAVE A PREFERENTIAL OR SPECIAL TREATMENT TO “SLAUGHTER� WHEN THEY HAVE NATIVE VISAYAN PLAYERS WHO ARE AS GOOD (OR EVEN BETTER). WHO PAYS TO SUPPORT THEMSELVES? I am a Fil-Am. The one who suggested to bring our Professional player to the Philippines. Can you afford to pay for a $50,000.00 deal? IF so, they should import a better player. (whew, the interpreter is lost) Don’t try to correct my “Mipana”. I know I lacked a tilde on top of the N. I’m telling you guys, this Mipana came from Dauis, Bohol. They migrated to Leyte and to Mindanao (?). You want to know who brought LALONG to UV? BACK IN MAY 20,2000 (a Saturday, to be precise) LALONG (ARIEL) IS A NATIVE FILIPINO.     The spelling of “Mepana” (M-E) is wrong. The correct spelling is M-I (”Mipana”). Now, they are playing in Mindanao, the home of Mipana immigrants.

    I saw all the UV player score, and your import player, Slaughter, was the lowest scorer overall. Isn’t it embarrassing? We had a 5′8″ player in University of Maryland back in 2004 and now he playing as a Professional (NBA). What do you think about that?!

    My comments are about Slaughter. His parents are flapping their ears that their son is tall, but he could not get any athletic scholarship here in the United States because he is a lousy player. I think that the University of Visayas basketball team commissioner(?) must be dumb and an idiot. You should not look down on your own country man, And be proud that you have native people who plays well and have the height too(?).

    The spelling of Mepana M E is wrong. The Correct spelling is M I Mipana. Now that they are Playing in Mindanao which is the home of Mipana immigrants.

    I see all the UV player score, the your import player (Slaughter) was the lowest score over all. Is that embarrassing. We had a 5′8″ tall player in University of Maryland back in 2004 and now he played in Professional (NBA). What do you think about that!
