University of Visayas has invaded Manila.
The UV Green Lancers overcame a lethargic first half to pull-off a convincing 101-80 win over the Lyceum Pirates and clinch the last quarterfinal slot in the Flying V National Collegiate Champions League last November 17 at The Arena in San Juan City.
University of Visayas, with the win, will face the University of Mindanao in the quarterfinals at 2pm on November 19 to be followed by the 4pm match between reigning back-to-back NCAA champion San Beda and UST.
The Green Lancers, playing with promising 6-foot-11 Fil-Am Greg Slaughter, unleashed a scorching 34-20 burst in the third period and transformed the 37-40 halftime deficit to a 72-60 third quarter lead.
Guard Von Lanete, younger brother of Purefoods rookie playmaker Chico Lanete, drilled in 14 points, including 13 straight points in the third quarter. His last shot gave UV a 50-47 advantage with 7:19 minutes left.
“We came out flat but I’m glad the players managed to regroup in the 2nd half, said UV head coach Elmer “Boy Cabahug, a former PBA player. “I credited Von for playing huge today. If we play like this, our chances are big to dominate this league.
Slaughter, a prized-catch giant rookie, showed a very promising performance when he delivered 8 points along with 4 rebounds and 4 blocked shots with 2 assists.
The main factor for the Green Lancers’ second half explosion was their 72 percent shooting clip in the last two quarters. UV also registered 48 points from beyond the arc.
Ritchum Dennison led the seven-time Cebu Schools Athletic Association Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) champion with 19 points and 8 rebounds, while 6-foot-7 power forward Rino Berame added 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Ariel Mepaña and Chris Diputado made 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Green Lancers. UV maximized its advantage in the shaded lane. They got a total of 63 rebounds against only 46 for the Pirates.
Individual scores:
UV 101 — Dennison 19, Berame 16, Lanete 14, Mepaña 14, Diputado 12, Slaughter 8, Luga 8, Villanil 6, Lao 2, Lasala 2, Tancongco 0, Arda 0.
