Far Eastern University showed its might last November 10, 2007 to topple CUSA champion Manuel Luis Quezon University, 91-80, and make it to the elite eight of 5th Flying V Collegiate Champions League at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Despite the threatening three-point attack executed by the Stallions, the Tamaraws relied heavily on their half-court trapping defense to limit the back-to-back Collegiate and Universities Sports Association champion from hitting downtown.

The Stallions, though, still shot 8-of-23 attempts beyond the arc against the 5-of-17 of the Tamaraws, who coached by mentor Glenn Capacio. They will face the winner between STI and University of the East.

“Well in the first place they shot very well from the three-point zone, said Capacio. “So we decided to lock them up in the second quarter. And we also outran them all-throughout.

MLQU star Alvin Vitug, who drained 13 triples during the CUSA finals, hit three triples and made two charities for 11 points in the first quarter but couldn’t score in the succeeding period due to FEU’s leech-like defense.

After a close 28-25 lead, FEU scorched MLQU in the second quarter, 30-15, to gain an insurmountable 58-40 halftime edge.

Center Aldrin Ramos, who tallied nine points and grabbed nine rebounds, scored on a put back twice to give FEU a 54-38 lead with 2:15 minutes left before halftime.

MLQU came within 62-54 with 5:16 minutes to go in the third but couldn’t sustain the run and FEU countered a blazing 15-4 burst, capped by the combined 13 points of Marlon Adolfo and Mac Baracael, to regain a huge lead at the start of final quarter, 77-58.

FEU, winner of 2003 and 2005 UAAP titles, did not surrender their double-digit lead the rest of the way in the last quarter.

Rebounding was also a huge factor for the Tamaraws as they out-rebounded the Stallions, 56-36. They gained 22 on second chance points while the Stallions had only 11.

Reil Cervantes and Adolfo scored 13 apiece to lead FEU. While Benedict Fernandez poured in 11 points.

The Tamaraws registered 39-out-of-79 (49%) from the field against the 27-out-of-73 (37%) from the Stallions, paced by Jo Custodio’s 18 points and 10 rebounds.

FEU issued more assists also than MLQU, 25-12.

Individual scores:

FEU (91) – Cervantes 13, Adolfo 13, Baracael 12, Fernandez 11, Ramos 9, Abaring 8, Cawaling 7, Barroca 5, Alisbo 5, Knuttel 4, Sanga 4.

MLQU (80) – Custodio 18, Luestestica 14, Vitug 11, Patricio 10, Tadlas 9, Manalansan 5, Dizon 4, Mendoza 4, Tamayo 2, Sangalang 2, Parapa 1, Sumayang 0, Crisostomo 0.

Quarter Scores: 28-25; 58-40; 77-58; 91-80

Note: In the shady part of the tournament, UE and De La Salle had reportedly withdrew from the CCL tournament. Details on this will be published in a short while with a spot phone and SMS interview with DLSU Head Coach Franz Pumaren.

MANILA, Philippines — The Far Eastern University Tamaraws rolled past the Manuel L. Quezon Stallions, 91-80, to advance to the “Round of 8″ at the start of the Collegiate Champions League Saturday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

The competition, though, hit a major bump when UAAP champion La Salle and runner-up University of the East recently withdrew from the tournament, which aims to pit the top 16 collegiate teams in the country.

UE’s not gonna defend its title??? Too bad…
I guess nadiscourage sila since they won’t be able to get revenge against La Salle. =)

UE had other issues in mind. Notice the rank, they are no. 4 when they are supposed to be no. 3 (no. 3 is Ateneo). Maybe this is the issue.

Regarding Mr. Abasolo’s comment, surely this isn’t just a matter of ranking, is it? Why would it even matter what seed UE is? Some schools are thankful just to be considered for the tourney. I think it’s just a matter of UE sourgraping…again.

tagamasid, taga UAAP takbuhin? Err…Where’s Letran? =)

La Salle didn’t join the tourney for four reasons:

    1. To give more time for the players to focus on their studies (which is also the same reason Letran didn’t join)

    2. Commitments to the PBL by some of the players

    3. La Salle doesn’t need to prove anything by joining an INVITATIONAL tournament. We know we are the best.

    4. Para naman manalo Ateneo. But then again, there’s still FEU, San Beda and JRU. This’ll be a good tournament.

    Peace. =)

La Salle doesn’t need to prove anything by joining an INVITATIONAL tournament. We know we are the best. - the Best, how is that possible? I know that you are still riding the wave of success, but how is that possible? Just curious.

haha! ayos sa mga reasons ah… keep it up! good luch sa STUDIES nyo! haha!

the Best, how is that possible? I know that you are still riding the wave of success, but how is that possible? Just curious. - What I meant by “we” is the Lasallian community. Of course, not everyone will agree with my statement. Just the opinion of a student that’s proud of his school. =)

Sir kik, as for La Salle, yeah, it’s hard na pagsabayin both, given the trimester system and the demands of the professors. I can’t say the same for Letran since I don’t know anybody from there.

Here’s what i believe. UE has the right to feel bad about its seeding. In my opinion they should be ranked no. 3 because, simply, they went to the UAAP Finals. But, I think UE should NOT withdraw thier participation and just prove everybody wrong. Aside from being the defending CCL Champs.

The CCL organizers or whoever is sanctioning this yearly tournament to think its basis for ranking teams to avoid this controversy.

Also, the PBL teams and its schools that send thier players to play semi-pro basketball or whatever you may call it, to re-think thier schedule, contracts(if any), etc. to fit this National endeavor of who is really the best college team in the land.

    Right Mike……….
UE should have at least considered in defending their crown in the CCL.

UE won last year…and yet they are not the best college team in the land.

Let’s treat this league for what it really is — a glorified exhibiton game.

It might be better and more interesting if we have a unifying league to determine the real collegiate champion of the land, as when the champs and runners up of UAAP and NCAA battle again for the unified crown.

merry x’ mas too all we here n cebu would like to thank ur site for giving us info on d CLC LEAGUE i hope that next year the league will organize d tournament here. we really miss big basketball, our coliseum will only b filled with people only on CESAFI championship games but after CESAFI its very boring… we just hpe and pray that this league will also focus there basketball program here n d south were n there are many talents waiting to b dscovered and for me this league needs support from big corporations and basketball fanatics coz this s were we get a lot of talent and train them for future competitions especially n d olympics. there are still many schools here n d south that cannot join CLC coz lack of funding from there own schools i think its time for the south to witness UAAAP or NCAA brand of play i think manila teams could afford transportation expenses coming to cebu, rather than visayas & mindanao schools going to manila and i hope ur website will help in accomplishing this dream of ours cebuanos too watch bigtime basketball and pls. let studio 23 or channel 11 cover d tournament.. so have a nice day guys and a have fruitfull new year too all good job guys..
