UAAP Season 70 Finals: Green Archers breaks Red Warriors’ heart

From suspension to champion.
After a year of absence, La Salle, unexpectedly, regained its throne in the 70th UAAP Senior Men’s basketball tournament last October 7, 2007.
The De La Salle University Green Archers has done the improbable in a best-of-three championship series by completing a two-game sweep – a 73-64 win in Game two – over the University of the East Red Warriors at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Green Archers, armed with a one-game advantage, used the free throw territory as its main course particularly in the fourth quarter, supplied long-time mentor Franz Pumaren his fifth UAAP title since 1998.
The Green Archers now have seven overall UAAP titles since joining the league in 1986.
“I won several championships in the past but it is bittersweet for me because I know now how it feels to beat your brother,” said Pumaren, also a Quezon City councilor. “If I can share half of our trophy, I can give it to UE because they also deserve it.”
“Cholo (Villanueva) is terrific, especially in the last three games including our playoff game against Ateneo while you should also give credit to TY (Tang),” he said. “Our championship experience did it for us.”
“They could have been playing now in the commercial leagues but they decided to stay with us, it’s so priceless to win a championship.”
University of the East, with a 14-0 record going into this series, performed fairly well in the defensive end but had 21 turnovers – including two in the final three minutes – that cost them the run for the title.
The Red Warriors also gave up 28 fouls, giving the Green Archers the opportunity to register 27-of-36 shots from the foul line. La Salle committed 18 fouls and UE only recorded 5-of-14 attempts from the free throw line.
UE committed a season-high 31 turnovers to drop Game one via a single point, 64-63.
After racing to a 15-11 lead in the first period, La Salle’s big man Rico Maierhofer and Peejay Barua merged for 14 points in the second quarter to ignite the Green Archers’ blistering 19-12 burst and earned their biggest lead by halftime, 34-23.
The Red Warriors tried as many times to trim down the gap in the 3rd quarter. With Kelvin Gregorio, Paul Lee and Mark Borboran at the helm, the Red Warriors were very close trailing by 1, 33-34 after 4 1/2 minutes of play in the 3rd. UE again had another run courtesy of Elmer Espiritu and Jorel Canizares for a 3-point deficit, 43-46, with 1:16 minutes to go. But the Green Archers had an answer to every UE rally.
In the final quarter, when Mark Borboran drained a long trey at the left flank to come closer at 51-52 with 8:31 minutes remaining, La Salle countered with a 9-4 run initiated by Casio’s triple and baskets from Villanueva and Tang to stretch back the lead, 61-55, with 5:21 minutes left in regulation.
UE’s combo guard Paul Lee scored two straight baskets to keep everything in striking distance, 59-61, with 2:05 minutes left in the last quarter. But Tang and Casio had their eyes focused on the prize anew and extended the edge, 66-59, with 51 seconds left.
From there, the Red Warriors lost control and could do nothing. La Salle’s gallery was celebrating chanting the Animo cheer.
Joseph Casio, who had 14 points (15 points in the 2nd half) shared the Finals MVP honors with Cholo Villanueva contributing 17 points for La Salle.
Maierhofer had 11 points – nine from the charity stripe – and grabbed 11 boards. While TY Tang had 8 points.
Borboran and Lee made 12 points each for UE, while Kelvin Gregorio added 11 points.
Individual Scores:
DLSU (73) – Casio 17, Villanueva 14, Maierhofer 11, Tang 8, Co 6, Barua 6, Malabes 5, Cua 2, Mangahas 2, Walsham 2, Atkins 0, Ferdinand 0.
UE (64) – Borboran 12, Lee 12, Gregorio 11, Cañizares 8, Martinez 8, Arellano 5, Espiritu 5, Fampulme 3, Lingganay 0, Bandaying 0, Llagas 0, Thiele 0.
Quarter Scores: 15-11; 34-23; 52-45; 73-64

Hi Duh,
Actually, his facts are almost accurate :-). But it was thier choice to leave San Beda, we fought for their stay, was one of them when we tried to keep Ren Ren in San Beda, but it was his choice coz we didn’t have a decent program then, now that we have it at least we can keep the attrition down to, well hopefully, bare minimum.
As for the_bedan, I hope you can see you face in the mirror when you use my alma mater as an excuse to badger anyone here in this article especially if the topic aint suited for the UAAP.
I hope to see everyone in November when we cover the College Champions League (CCL).
duh!!!!!

Why are we talking about an NCAA topic here? Anyway, Mr. Dolphin Dive - excuse me but I beg to disagree with your comments. I have said it in the other topics THAT - San Beda can win without Sam Ekwe. And, if you know your basketball…you will find all the answers why.

anyway, sa mga internet forums, grammar is only secondary to content. karamihan ng mga posts ng mga atenista lack substance and are devoid of logic.

Atenista,
Not all atenistas are good in grammar. They feel that everytime an Archer makes a mistake with grammar, lets put it this way– its just a typo error, they feel that they are one hell of a notch higher than an Archer. WRONG! Think again… This is not our Primary or Native language so making a mistake is not a major sin. Don’t be so confident of yourselves. Laughing at one’s mistake shows that ATENISTA’S ARE HILARIOUSLY IMMATURE PATHETIC SOCIAL CLIMBER THINGS ( NOTE: Atenista’s don’t fall on any of the classification of beings). They pull someone down to squeeze themselves up the ladder. Don’t be ridiculous. Atenista’s are so busy critisizing the Archers then come the bitter reality hangin in front of their faces: ATENEO IS >100 BELOW DE LA SALLE IN UNIVERSITY RANKING. Who’s to blame? Poor Archers, there’s no getting away with all the pathetic ramblings of the Atenista’s.
Atenista’s don’t have class….at all. Being rich and intelligent does’nt necessarily mean you have class and manners. They so want to put De La Salle down. We are constantly improving every aspectS of our system and we are doing it our way hence, mistakes and shortcomings are inevitable. Atenista’s show thickheaded imperviousness to the idea of ” MINDING YOUR OWN BUSINESS.” Your world is starting to revolve around De La Salle, and frankly ATENEO, YOU ARE SO PATHETIC. Get a Life! Improve yourselves in every way.
PEACE…
To my fellow Archers:
EXCELLENT JOB!
I AM PROUD TO BE AN ARCHER!
ANIMO LA SALLE!
LIVE JESUS IN OUR HEARTS… FOREVER!

sa mga warriors na kagaya ko, be proud, we did a very good job this season.. nothing to be ashamed of. & stop writing negative statement about archers or anyone in the league.. trueblooded warriors never do that..
i cried because we didn’t win but still i’m proud ’cause i’m from UE. nothing can change that even if we loose a hundred times.
Congrats to the Green Archers..
Animo La Salle!!
Peace!!

Congrats to the Green Archers…
I’m from UE and ofcourse medyo sad kasi di kami ang nagchampion this year (ang haba pa naman ng pila sa pagkuha ng ticket, hehe). I believe ‘di talaga pa namin time. It’s your time Archers kaya. Di din ako pabor na nasuspend kayo last year, kaya deserve nyo talaga yung title this season.Kaya Congrats sa inyong lahat. Wag lang sana bastusin or babuyin ang school ko. And pasensya na rin sa iba kong schoolmate na nag-aacuse sa inyo. It was really a great game… See you next year. Congrats..
ANIMO LA SALLE.. you have my respect..
but still I’m proud to be a trueblooded WARRIOR!!! red inside & out…

I sympathize with UE… especially towards Dindo Pumaren. After at least 22 years of failure and this year’s 14-0 sweep, the championship was virtually guaranteed. Promised to say the least. Sayang. Fall down 7, Stand up 8. Hope they rally and redeem themselves next year.

Sam Ekwe definitely changes a game whenever he plays. Having a huge, (at 6′7″) athletic big man on offense and defense is a huge advantage. If Beda didn’t win every game with him playing, ewan ko na lang. I could just imagine if they had two with the next Nigerian that is hyped to be bigger and more talented than Ekwe.
One word: DOMINATION. period.
I-lista niyo na next season sa San Beda. One thing for sure, I won’t bet my money against them. I only wish Jobe Nkemakolam played like his Nigerian counterpart in the NCAA. Maybe Ateneo also would have had the same result.
I sometimes wonder how the rampaging UE warrior during their 14-0 sweep would have fared against San Beda. Nice game to watch if they gave it their all. Sana mangyari sa CCL.

GREEN DYE,
RED IS RIGHT. wag mo nilalahat ang san beda.. baka masama lang ang loob mo kay the_bedan. hindi naman ata tama na nilalahat mo ang bedans at isa pa hindi naman bedista itong si THE_BEDAN E. nakikisawsaw lang yan. in fact bedans have nothing against la salle. we are both champions so theres nothing wrong with that.
sa lahat ng mga tumutuligsa kay sam,
we can beat you anytime, anywhere even without sam. sam is a bedan and his human hindi katulad ng mga sinasabi nyo. infact kaya sya pumunta ng pilipinas para maging BENEDICTINE MONK..
and again this is a la salle article why bring that up here!
ANIMO SAN BEDA!!!!
CONGRATS LA SALLE!!!
i hope we ill face each other sa CCL finals..

congratulations to the green archers. we all deserve the crown. the season was really interesting, the best i’ve seen so far.
ateneo gave a good fight, all through out the five games. i have nothing against them actually, but when the game starts, the rivalry starts. when the game ends, the rivalry ends as well.
for ue, there’s really nothing to be ashamed of. the green archers were the underdogs coming into the best-of-three series. 14-0 sweep by the warriors is really something, a history, and something to be proud of. the team was composed of great individuals, the deepest bench in the whole league.
dlsu, on the other hand, just relied on the championship experience and the veteran players.
a fair play, a fair match.
i guess we’ll see a stronger ue red warriors next season. and i hope dlsu gave them the championship experience which they can use, come next season, to try and get the crown.
as much as i want to say that dlsu still will be the winners for the next season, i’ll admit that we’ll have a long way to go. teams will definitely be more mature, and expect a good fight next season.
to people who say that rico is ‘mayabang’, i guess he looks mayabang during a game. but if you actually are a la sallian, and got the time to meet him and talk to him, he’s really a good person.
again, congratualtions to the de la salle green archers, as well as to the ue red warriors, as coach franz said, they deserve the other half of the trophy.

Its proven that we are the best this season. Who knows next year another team will reign the UAAP mens basketball.. But please the game is over on both league kaya tigilan na po yung siraan ng mga players and school. NOT a healthy thing to do… ORAS namin ngayon kaya ibigay nyo n sa amin. UE made a tremendous recordthis season and he are happy for them but please tigilan na po natin yun school fight…Our player bring pride to our school this year, let your player work hard next year to grab the title. UE played well but our archers played much better kaya nanalo kami..

Kakatuwa naman si the_bedan. Kung sa bagay, most of them ay ganyan ang ugali. One word to San Beda, “IMPORT”!
We are the champions!
Animo Lasalle!
-My question is… Why? lasalle never had an import?
If “I” (this is my own opinion and I’m not standing on behalf of all Bedans) will agree with you that San Beda deserves that ‘One word’ that you were saying, then what do you think is the best word for lasalle? “CHEATER?”.
Ekwe is a legitimate import, but your ‘imports’ coming from different schools,
ARE YOU NOT PROUD OF THEM? -like Casio? BTW, He’s a Bedan.
How about your “illegitimate imports?”
Think man, think.
Think before you post something.
no hard feelings. Just reflect on that. PAX! :D

Green Dye,
Do you think that the San Beda can beat PCU and Letran without Ekwe? - Why Not.
San Beda has proven, but not in public, that even without Ekwe, though hard pressed, San Beda can still win it all. The Red Lions were prepared in case of the non-Ekwe scenario. And they had the confidence to back it up.
And don’t be deceived by Ekwe’s presence, his skills need a lot of work. He is just tall and athletic, no more no less. It is just San Beda’s time.

@red, actually, we’re discriminated by the other race.
I’m not against to Ekwe. Gusto ko lang sabihin sa fellow bedans mo na kaya nag backtoback champion kayo is all because Ekwe. Do you think that the San Beda can beat PCU and Letran without Ekwe? I don’t think so… Or baka hindi pa kayo pumasok sa finals nung PCU time. BTW, 1 game suspeded lang si Ekwe. =)
