UAAP Season 70 Finals: Green Archers breaks Red Warriors’ heart

From suspension to champion.
After a year of absence, La Salle, unexpectedly, regained its throne in the 70th UAAP Senior Men’s basketball tournament last October 7, 2007.
The De La Salle University Green Archers has done the improbable in a best-of-three championship series by completing a two-game sweep – a 73-64 win in Game two – over the University of the East Red Warriors at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Green Archers, armed with a one-game advantage, used the free throw territory as its main course particularly in the fourth quarter, supplied long-time mentor Franz Pumaren his fifth UAAP title since 1998.
The Green Archers now have seven overall UAAP titles since joining the league in 1986.
“I won several championships in the past but it is bittersweet for me because I know now how it feels to beat your brother,” said Pumaren, also a Quezon City councilor. “If I can share half of our trophy, I can give it to UE because they also deserve it.”
“Cholo (Villanueva) is terrific, especially in the last three games including our playoff game against Ateneo while you should also give credit to TY (Tang),” he said. “Our championship experience did it for us.”
“They could have been playing now in the commercial leagues but they decided to stay with us, it’s so priceless to win a championship.”
University of the East, with a 14-0 record going into this series, performed fairly well in the defensive end but had 21 turnovers – including two in the final three minutes – that cost them the run for the title.
The Red Warriors also gave up 28 fouls, giving the Green Archers the opportunity to register 27-of-36 shots from the foul line. La Salle committed 18 fouls and UE only recorded 5-of-14 attempts from the free throw line.
UE committed a season-high 31 turnovers to drop Game one via a single point, 64-63.
After racing to a 15-11 lead in the first period, La Salle’s big man Rico Maierhofer and Peejay Barua merged for 14 points in the second quarter to ignite the Green Archers’ blistering 19-12 burst and earned their biggest lead by halftime, 34-23.
The Red Warriors tried as many times to trim down the gap in the 3rd quarter. With Kelvin Gregorio, Paul Lee and Mark Borboran at the helm, the Red Warriors were very close trailing by 1, 33-34 after 4 1/2 minutes of play in the 3rd. UE again had another run courtesy of Elmer Espiritu and Jorel Canizares for a 3-point deficit, 43-46, with 1:16 minutes to go. But the Green Archers had an answer to every UE rally.
In the final quarter, when Mark Borboran drained a long trey at the left flank to come closer at 51-52 with 8:31 minutes remaining, La Salle countered with a 9-4 run initiated by Casio’s triple and baskets from Villanueva and Tang to stretch back the lead, 61-55, with 5:21 minutes left in regulation.
UE’s combo guard Paul Lee scored two straight baskets to keep everything in striking distance, 59-61, with 2:05 minutes left in the last quarter. But Tang and Casio had their eyes focused on the prize anew and extended the edge, 66-59, with 51 seconds left.
From there, the Red Warriors lost control and could do nothing. La Salle’s gallery was celebrating chanting the Animo cheer.
Joseph Casio, who had 14 points (15 points in the 2nd half) shared the Finals MVP honors with Cholo Villanueva contributing 17 points for La Salle.
Maierhofer had 11 points – nine from the charity stripe – and grabbed 11 boards. While TY Tang had 8 points.
Borboran and Lee made 12 points each for UE, while Kelvin Gregorio added 11 points.
Individual Scores:
DLSU (73) – Casio 17, Villanueva 14, Maierhofer 11, Tang 8, Co 6, Barua 6, Malabes 5, Cua 2, Mangahas 2, Walsham 2, Atkins 0, Ferdinand 0.
UE (64) – Borboran 12, Lee 12, Gregorio 11, Cañizares 8, Martinez 8, Arellano 5, Espiritu 5, Fampulme 3, Lingganay 0, Bandaying 0, Llagas 0, Thiele 0.
Quarter Scores: 15-11; 34-23; 52-45; 73-64

Aidz, I’m sorry my La Sallian brother but Hail Mary squad is right. Yes, we did win the championship and we can gloat all we want. Pero iba na pag ganyang hiritan. We may have heard bashings from the blue side, but that’s over. Season’s over. We won. Yeah sure, we have the bragging rights I mean that’s part of it all. But to put down the other schools is not classy at all. That is not how La Sallians should act. No offense, man. Not that I’m going against you or anything. We should be humble in victory and gracious in defeat remember. Hayaan mo nalang yung mga tumitira sa atin dati.

Between the La Salle and San Beda comments, I also think that its cool if the time comes that the UAAP and NCAA would merge in a real competitive tournament to determine an undisputed champion in Metro Manila (considering there are also other Universities throughout the Philippines).
Pero, I imagine, ang tagal siguro ng season nun! Walang katapusang bashing sa forums! joke. peace.

Yeah. True. True. Although I admit I expected more of a fight from them. The height of their success in the regular season set them up for the greatest fall. The 14-0 sweep was a historic feat I admit. But, they crashed and burned when it mattered the most. I wish it was in a blaze of glory. They were more like colossal choke artists. I guess they had a false notion of invincibility during their 3 week inactivity. The greatest weakness to exploit. I wish they put up more of a fight and extended the series to a game 3. Instead they panicked and succumbed to the pressure. I’m sorry for them.
La Salle was composed and battle-tested. Kudos again.
I still commend UE for their performance this season. With the hype though, I definitely expected more. I thought they were due this year. Anyway, that’s for them to sort out until next season. Mukang the theories na pang-regular season lang sila could be true. If there was a final 4, it’s possible they would have choked their twice to beat as well like last year against USTe. A “what if” season for UE as well.
OBF!

Let’s give credit where credit is due. The Warriors have nothing to be ashamed of despite going 14-0 in the eliminations. It just ain’t their time as their players are still lacking in UAAP championship experience, Most of UE’s players were still in tears when they exited the coliseum. Yet, the Warriors accepted the painful defeat graciously They might have bowed down, but they did it in style; and for this, they should be commended. When all has been said and done, they turned out to be one CLASSY team!
THANKS RED WARRIORS FOR PUSHING US TO THE LIMIT!

Bedan, kaya lang nagchampion ang San Beda, eh kasi nag-import pa kayo ng negro. Ganyan talaga and desperate after 30 years na walang championship sa NCAA. What a shame, you needed help from abroad to win. Mabuti pa ang Letran, all-flipino players.

dimwit! Walsham and Ferdinand came from LSGH while Atkins came from DLSZ. They’re as homegrown as anyone could get. Where as your Sam “Kwekwek” has “import” written all over him. Get your facts right before you start accusing and bashing.

to all bashers here: Guys, wag sana natin kalimutan na basketball lang ‘to. In fact, this was one hell of a season and we should all be happy to be a part of it. But whatever you throw at us (mandaraya, suspended, wrong spelling, nanuntok) we don’t really give an F! Bottom line is we won the crown! Magmumuka lang kayong inggit at sourgrapers nyan so just save yourselves some dignity. Just a piece of advice.
To our Atenean and Bedan friends who congratulated us, thank you. You showed what sportsmanship really is. Buti hindi nyo ginaya yung iba dito. To Ateneo, thanks for putting in the spice for this season. Di magiging ganito kaganda UAAP season 70 kung hindi dahil sa inyo. To the Bedans, congrats sa inyo for winning the NCAA championship and goodluck next year!
THE UAAP MEN’S BASKETBALL CROWN IS BACK IN TAFT AVENUE!

congratulations to la salle for winning the championship. the team played well and capitalized on UE’s inexperience.
to go_animo:
La Salle has faith in God. And all this time, God was with La Salle even those times we were unjustly suspended from the league. This is our reward.
this is something that i really can’t understand. how was la salle unjustly suspended? didn’t you really field in ineligible players?

After a year of waiting, La Salle made this UAAP season the best ever. The other schools should also be proud of this season, the plot was full of twist and turn that made this season a real thriller.
Coach Franz is definitely one of the greatest collegiate coaches of our times, the recognition and subsequent adjustments he made against a more talented UE squad was key to the sweep of the finals. He did bring out suprises from the bench, Barua, Ferdinand and my favorite Kish Co did a splendid job as well assured LaSallians of competitive Archers in the years to come.
Coach Franz also did a job on Ateneo, masterfully choking and running down the tired eagles. From the two losses in elimination, most people thought La Salle would let the eagles go to the finals. But Coach Franz knows how to improvise and get the best out of his team. Rico was a controlled assassin, and the veterans was also given the roles of leaders more than ever.
I guess there are also some things going for La Salle: Hunger for Redemption, Better than most Basketball recruitment, no non-sense practices, instilling of discipline and stamina building, and the hunger of the veterans to win it all.
La Salle was also lucky: UE grope for leaders during the finals, UE also was panicking mainly because they were not seriously challenge. Dindo Pumaren was not able to break the shackling defense. Ateneo’s also was too tired to stay with the Archers staying power, Coach Norman poor defense on Rico Maierhofer. And ofcourse, NU gave La Salle a big morale boost.
I hope to witness another great season next year and hope La Salle wins the championship one more time.
Animo La Salle!
Go San Beda Fight!
Long live the Pakwans, those Green outside but Red inside!
