Will The Icing Follow?

It was a festive day of green and red at the Araneta Coliseum. As the crowds were starting to come, it felt different from the energy that was present in last Sunday’s La Salle – Ateneo game. There was excitement from the La Salle crowd because it is the Finals but it didn’t have the tension that was in everyone’s faces in the last game.
The UE fans on the other hand were eager to get the game started. They had been waiting for 20 days and their wait was compounded by the high intensity level of the last 2 La Salle – Ateneo games. After all, they did win 14 straight games to automatically capture the 1st Finals berth but this seemed overshadowed by the playoff games for that 2nd seat.
During the warm-ups, I noticed that the UE Red Warriors were focused, maybe too focused or what we call “gigil. The Green Archers on the other hand looked more relaxed having just played 2 back to back thrillers.
Finally, the jump ball and Game 1 of the Finals was on its way.
Both teams looked tight early and it was immediately obvious that both teams were mirroring their defense. But with UE dominating the boards on both ends of the floor, they did not look like they skipped a beat.
UE ends the first quarter with a 45% field goal shooting while La Salle could only make 5 of 16 from the field.. With the 1st quarter score at 20 – 14 for UE, the La Salle fans seemed restless but still in high spirits.
The 2nd quarter was an all together different story. La Salle clamped down on its defense and also began getting hot. The Red Warriors seemed confused and with still 8 minutes to go, Coach Dindo Pumaren had already used up all his timeouts.
La Salle erases the UE 8 point lead by forcing forces more turnovers. The game starts to get physical, which would definitely be to UE’s advantage because of their size. UE just totally dominates the rebounds.
Sloppy offense on both sides keeps the scoring low, which would benefit La Salle because the Green Archers were playing slow deliberated basketball while the Red Warriors were running.
The first half ends at 39 – 37 for UE and the La Salle crowd was wondering, is it possible?
A look at some stats from the first half makes this game even more confusing. Though scoring percentages were almost equal, UE outrebounded La Salle 34 to 13. La Salle however caused UE to commit 12 turnovers while committing only 5 and had more blocks than their taller opponents.
The 3rd quarter saw both teams shooting terrible. Neither team could build a substantial lead but again this was definitely an advantage for La Salle. It was actually starting to be a coach’s match. Continuous substitution from both sides just kept coming.
The quarter ends with UE shooting 3 of 11 while La Salle 4 of 20. The jitters of the Finals were very evident. With UE still on top 50 – 47, the match was definitely anyone’s to take.
The 4th quarter belonged to TY Tang. He just lit up the scoreboard and kept La Salle in the game. Playing alongside veterans Pocholo Villanueva, Rico Maierhofer and JV Casio, the Green Archers began showing what Conach Dindo Pumaren feared most, the championship experience of La Salle. Surprisingly, it was the rookie Ferdinand that stood his ground against the UE big men.
Coach Franz, knew exactly what he had to do and kept his younger brother reacting to his moves. La Salle showed the composure that had vanished many times in the past games. UE on the other hand seemed lost.
With less than a minute to go, La Salle takes a 3 point lead. But UE’s Mark Borboran hits a 3 and ties the game. Rico Maierhofer gets fouled and splits his charities. With La Salle up by 1 and less than 20 seconds to go, UE goes for the final shot. La Salle makes one last defensive stand and UE just can’t find a way to score. Malabes gets the final rebound of the game and La Salle gets the win.
As the La Salle crowd was in jubilation, the UE players looked shocked. Their first loss of the season happens at the worst time. They are not invincible after all.
I felt that the deep bench of Coach Dindo backfired on him today. He has so much talent on that team but did not seem to have the core group he needed for today. Maybe substitutions were made too fast, so much so that the players were not able to get into the groove at the end game.
Oh the end game, how important is that? It was La Salle’s weakness that they have now transformed into their strength.
Can the UE Red Warriors come back from this devastating loss? They have never had that this year and it will be a test of their character to do so. Will the Green Archers go for the jugular on Sunday? They better, because a 3rd game will be an advantage for UE.
We got the cake when we beat Ateneo. Will the icing follow?

Also, do not use the name of God in vain.
Sheesh, you’ll even use God’s name just to bring down another institution together with your chismis.
Pity you, atenean.

Excuses.
“Win or LOSE, its the EXCUSE you choose”
Ateneans = Crab Mentality.
You’ll do EVERYTHING and ANYTHING just to bring down anyone/everyone most especially La Salle. You just can’t accept the reality that La Salle is now better than ‘duh’ ateneo, be it in academics and in sports.
Tsk. So much for being a “man for others”. Tsk.

mr atayde, im not trying to be holy.. but honestly, im already pathetic. ive been pathetic already because of the filthy things that the green community is always doing. and its already driving me crazy. oh, like a lyrics of a song, huh?.. ;p well, im not saying that you guys cheat all the time.. just most of the time.. :)
remember, you have a banner in the coliseum that i adore.. “winning when it matters most.” and if i would be an atenean, it will really insult me to read that..
but calm down mr atayde and all those green faithfuls, i have an answer to it…
“cheating when it matters most.” =)
you dont chea* all the time, but most of the time, especially when it matters most. =)
remember, god is watching us all.
no need to have proofs that you guys cheated. res ipsa loquitor.. the thing speaks for itself.. its already clear just even to watch the refs calling their unlawful calls against the reds. ;p
godspeed mr atayde.
by the way, the refs should have a fair share of the trophy guys, they also really worked hard for it.
its a fact, the green won the championship. and i had to live with it. and it really makes my life worth regretting all the time. =( sad truth.

GODISWATCHINGUSALL,
Your holier that thous attitude is so pathetic. So, everytime La Salle wins, the referee is paid. Truth is the opposing team scored less points than La Salle.
La Salle is the champion. LIVE WITH IT!!!

sourgraping is when youre saying a thing on which u really mean the opposite of it. well, i never sourgraped mr. atayde.. i just tell the truth. because i know that you know it too, the filthy habit that your team do just to win. and when someone is accusing your team of paying the refs, you just always say that theyre sourgraping. but still, you never gave an answer. then why dont you answer this comment once and for all and tell it right after this comment that your team never payed any refs ever at any game. but even if you said no, id still doubt coz your team dont even care allowing ineligible players to play . remember, the truth will always set you free.. no more sourgraping this time, no more change-the-topic things, no more lie..
god is watching us all, remember. trophy here is just a thing.. a trophy up there in heaven is just everything, including your salvation old man. =)

You should chage your name to greensourgrapes. And what the hell is “racu”?
Must be hard to wake up every morning and have to use the same old line of “buying the refs” just to at least give you consuelo d bobo. Why dont you just flush yourself in the toilet. At least after you do that you will be among things that are just like you.

I just hope that eventually, there would be an Atenean counterpart next year. A Blue Blood to counter the Green Mind!
Congrats on your sweep La Salle. Game 2 wasn’t even that close. Your players showed up with their A game and eventually won the game. You deserve it.
I like the comment that stated “La Salle steel was formed and hardened in Ateneo fire” after those duels. Poetic. You fought the good fight against seemingly invincible UE.

Hail Mary Squad,
You are good sport.
You are absolutely right about the rivalry. I am very big Boston Celtic fan but I lived in Los Angeles for many years. I was a witness to those great Celtic-Laker games with Bird going up against Magic.
That is the closest, but not even equal, I can compare to a La Salle Ateneo game.

Regarding Tony,
I have to admit his column, even if it is notoriously and even ridiculously biased towards La Salle, is still very entertaining with the reaction it sparks. Controversial to say the least. This is the only forum where I post because the people are really riled up because of his comments and he is unapologetic because of it. It’s fun to join the fray.
After reading the “Dignity…” and “La Salle beat La Salle” articles, I thought this guy sees only what he wants to see. I guess the “sus…” banner really hit him hard that he felt he had to defend his alma matter. A few articles later, you understand the guy’s just passionate for DLSU. Hey, aren’t we all regarding our respective universities. The only thing I completely disagree with is his statement regarding recruitment. But hey, everyone has an opinion. I definitely may not agree with his but at least I respect it.
There’s really nothing like UAAP basketball. It gives people the chance to act extremely childish with all the bashing that goes on. It is the only place where I could see old alumni during live games taunting, jeering and acting juvenile.

Actually, in DLSU’s defense (I can’t believe I’m doing this) A win is still a win regardless of theories of it being biased. If the referees constantly made calls in favor of La Salle throughout the game, that would be fixed. I still choose to believe it was called right in the middle (even in the ADMU games).Fact of the matter is, because of our passion for our schools, all of us want virtually all the calls to go our way just to win. There’s no fun in that. Winners make losers and losers make excuses.
Overall, minus the Ilad blunder, this was a good season for La Salle. As an Atenean no less, their suspension last year made me realize that (forgive me for my term) they are a necessary evil (vice-versa for La Salle). The Red Sox have the Yankees just as Ateneo has La Salle. There’s no other rivalry in the country like it. They more than made up for their absence last year with 5 epic games against Ateneo. These were classics! ADMU/DLSU games are the best show in the Philippines. After Ateneo lost, I was sad because it will be until a year until I watch these games again. Sorry substitute NBA season muna!
Regarding the UE collapse, they have nobody but themselves to blame for it. People even proclaimed this team as capable to beat even Pro-league teams. I certainly felt that after that 14-0, they could still beat La Salle even with the referees allegedly all paid up…but they didn’t. Losing sucks, especially the way they did. But hey, there’s always next year and the year after that unless they get suspended!

PinKisH_23,
There you go again…”we all know”?? When you say “we all know” that means no exceptions. But with all the positive posts in this article, it appears that your generalization is absolutely idiotic.
You dont have to be intrigued by my writing cos at least there are those who have given positive feedback. In your case, your comments are those of a parnaoid, schizo individual. You keep pounding on the refs just because they cant reply to your wayward accusations. You blame La Salle and everyone you can think off. Always blaming blaming blaming.
Kawawa ka naman. Tomorrow you will still wake up miserable cos nothing you can say, no story you can concoct will take that championship away. LIVE WITH IT!

Not really interested with La Salle’s over glorified win (though we all know what happened to that game, cash…ing cash…ing). Just so intrigued with the way you write your wayward ideas. BTW, keep rubbing it you might get satisfied.

Thank you once more for making my day start great. Nothing you can say can take away the fact that Im happy and you’re not.
You want to add to my misery? You must be living a Nickelodeon life cos it is apparent that you are the one wallowing in misery.
Lastly, people are interested in La Salle’s championship. Even you are interested since it seems to have a very strong adverse effect on you and you keep coming back here. If you weren’t interested then you should be on some Anger Management website.
