Ateneo Beats Ateneo

Yes you read the title of my article right. The shoe was on the other foot as the Ateneo Blue Eaglets squandered a 6 point lead with 2 minutes to go in regulation as La Salle tied it with a 3 pointer with 5 seconds left and send the game into overtime.

Ateneo looked ready to send the series into a rubber match with 24 seconds to go and still leading 3. La Salle fouled and Ateneo scored both free throws. La Salle hit a 2 with 12 seconds left and immediately fouled and Ateneo hit 1 of 2. La Salle brought the ball down and a perfect play was made to give Manguera an open 3.

In the overtime period, La Salle’s Joshua Webb and Brian Manguera took over to give La Salle Zobel the victory and the championship via a 2 game sweep of the first place Blue Eaglets.

Composure, game clock management and most of all the desire to win was very evident in every player on the La Salle Zobel team.

The Seniors Basketball Team should watch that game and maybe pick up a few things on what they will need to beat the Blue Eagles on Sunday. Whether they win or not, the future looks good for the Green Archers.

La Salle Zobel coach Boris Aldeguer said “we were not given the chance to defend the title last year and we had something to prove this year. The 2005 champions had lost graduates Migs de Asis, Simon Atkins and Martin Reyes.

All eyes are now on the awesome Joshua Webb, son of Lasallian Fritz Webb and grandson of the original spitfire Freddie Webb. He would be a great addition to a La Salle seniors’ team and play alongside Rico Maierhofer. Today, he had 21 rebounds as well as 2 crucial offensive board in the end game that led to a tip in plus a foul. The kid is just what La Salle needs.

Brian Manguera, son of former La Salle player and now Vice Mayor of Lipa, Boy Maguera, is another player that is worth looking into along with Capacio and Fortuna, who looks like a JV Casio in the making.

Congratulations to the De La Salle Zobel Junior Basketball Team for a great season and most of all for the championship.

I hope this would encourage DLSU to look for homegrown players, not some outsiders like Ilad. :) Yung totoong Lasalista, hindi mga mercenaries.

Also, I hope LSGH recruits championship-material players like DLSZ. Bulok ang LSGH lately sa NCAA. The last star from LSGH that I saw was Mike Gavino. Sayang he wasn’t given opportunities in the favoritism-laden DLSU team. Nice to see Mika Vainio, Bruce Quebra, and Mike Gavino reunite at UP back in 2005.

… i mean if there were players such as Gavino and Vainio, DLSU Graduates (something really to be proud of. I can’t recall Yeo, Cardona, Cabatu, Arana, et. al graduating) who opted to play their final years in UP, there’s something wrong. Or sayang sina de Asis and Martin Reyes, they opted to go to UP instead of DLSU (some claim it was largely because of Joe Lipa)

Anyway, Biatrevic and Ferdinand is something to watch for. Diba mga LSGH grads sila?

    Workhorse,

I along with a very large number of alumni are happy that La Salle Zobel has now started a solid high school basketball program. The seniors team now has 3 homegrown in Atkins (La Salle Zobel), Batricevic (3 years in LSGH) and Ferdinand (3 years in LSGH).

In addition, La Salle now has 18 campuses nationwide which means that more high school talent can be out there without being recognized.

With the excellent quality of players coming out of La Salle Zobel, I wouldn’t be surprised if there will be up to 7 homegrown players in next year’s team. Webb, Fortuna, Manguera and Capacio are ready.

    greenmind,

that’s really nice to hear. Props to DLSZ for winning the title yesterday, I have to give it to them for fighting up to the last second.

I hope LSGH will have a solid high school basketball program soon. LSGH has been a big disappointment in the NCAA. Bro. Oca used to be our president at LSGH, can’t he lend an “influential” hand to fix the LSGH basketball program? :)

    Workhorse,

The people taking the lead in beefing up, the basketball program at LSGH is the Alumni Association. The person in charge is Jojo Misa, who was my teammate when we both played for LSGH in the NCAA in 1969. Our team played for the finals but we lost to Mapua.

The goal is to have a competetive LSGH team for the schools Golden Jubilee in 2009.

finally, after the 5th ateneo-lasalle encounter i guess you can finally write an article that says ‘La Salle beats Ateneo’!

i thought the win earlier was pretty convincing and with the current string of ‘team beats team’ articles, the title would be perfect!

    great game team #488 ( sus… )

    Animo La Salle! :)

you are all correct… la salle is the better school… #488 lang ateneo… ateneo does not have distinguished alumni to speak of… d gaya ng la salle… may dingdong avanzado, gary v, randy santiago, ogie da pogi… and of course, si kabagang….

    Jeez,

Joshua Webb is a homegrown talent. As La Salle is developing its players and may have ss many a 7 homegrown talents on a 15 man roster, Ateneo is now going the opposite direction.

Kieffer Ravena stole the spotlight from the Zobel champions!! Joshua Webb is good and he’s sure to be in the SEniors team…
But Kieffer Ravena is a phenomenon! LA Tenorio level even if he’s not even old enough to shave! - FYI, my Lasalian officemate was the one who said this…

i never questioned joshua webb’s being a homegrown talent… it’s his arogance im peeved about… bata pa kasi, i guess… pero talent-wise, wala akong masabi… magaling talaga.

name la salle marquee players in the past few years na homegrown talent talaga (grade school-college)… i can’t recall any…

Sirs, don’t get peeved by the long-snout bravado of Joshua Webb. All great players, made, or in-the-making, have some form of Alpha Male attitude (sabi nga rin ni Charles Barkley). It’s their way of pump-priming the adrenalin to boost performance. The young man only wants to impress the old man and the old man’s elder man. Ours were a more laid back generation unlike today. No scores for personality, just the points. Just let it not be carried off-court. D Baleng mayabang basta may pakinabang. Cheer din tayo pag nanalo di ba? GREEN THUMBS UP, LIVE JESUS IN OUR HEARTS - FOREVER! ANIMO LA SALLE!!!

Congrats to the Junior Archers. The loss of the Blue Eaglets was really an arrow stuck on our throats. Lets give credit where credit is due, technically speaking this is the first time two defending champions met in the Jrs. final and DLS-Z came out on top becoz of their big heart. I congratulate Webb, he never had plays called for him but his determination and will to win rubbed on the rest of the team. He had a ton of offensive rebounds, played great help defense on JV Dumrique and scored when needed. Congrats also to Jeric Fortuna for a great game.

To the Blue Eaglets, hope you learn from this experience that will help you become a better team, fight it out again next year and hopefully win it all.

Very Opinionated. Very Green. Hate him. Love Him. It does not matter and he does not care. A Howard Stern in cyberspace. He bleeds Green, He is purely from La Salle – as a former writer and Assistant Vice President for Events of the DLSU Alumni Association. Played basketball and was on the track and field team for La Salle during the NCAA just don't ask what year.
