UE can be beaten – Ateneo, La Salle

For La Salle and Ateneo, unbeaten University of the East is beatable.

For Blue Eagles Coach Norman Black, and La Salle assistant coach Joey Sta. Maria said whoever wins against them in the series is definitely an underdog when it faces the UE Red Warriors, who swept their 14-game assignments.

“They’ve proved that they are the best team after finishing the series without a loss,â€? said Black in yesterday’s PSA Forum in Shakey’s UN Manila. “But it doesn’t mean that UE can win the title easily. La Salle and Ateneo are both good teams.â€?

Sta. Maria, represented La Salle mentor Franz Pumaren, also said UE is absolutely balance offensively and defensively.

“UE plays tough in the defensive end and it executes its plays most of the time, said Sta. Maria. “But UE is not unbeatable. Of course, any of us (La Salle and Ateneo) can surprise them.

Ateneo dethroned University of Santo Tomas last Sunday, 69-64, to face La Salle, which has a twice-to-beat edge, in the semifinals.

Against La Salle, Black said Ateneo could overcome its twice-to-beat disadvantage if his team will win on September 27.

“Just win the first game, said Black, referring to De La Salle-Ateneo semifinals series. “Then everything would become equal for both teams. I believe my players have the willingness to make it possible.

Sta. Maria said La Salle will not give Ateneo a slim chance in the series. “We have to win on Thursday (September 27), said Sta. Maria. “There is no way we can allow them to force a 2nd Game because we really respect Black as a coach.

If La Salle wins on Thursday, it would be UE-La Salle in the best-of-three finals that will start on October 4 at the Big Dome.

But an Ateneo win, a winner-take-all match between the two archrivals will be arranged on Sunday, September 30.

The Pumaren brothers did not attend the forum due to various reasons. Dindo had a team practice in the morning, while his older brother Franz had attended a councilor’s session in Quezon City. Franz Pumaren is currently the third district councilor of QC.

This is the part where all you lasalle bashers eat your words. Tama na bashing. Let’s just watch the games coz they speak for themselves. WE WILL BE CHAMPIONS. It’s inevitable. :). Haha. Sana.

PS: All this banter is just what comes out of our passion for our own schools. Walang personalan. Tama na reklamo about refs and all that crap. Nasa utak nio lang yang luto luto na yan. What if the last second 3-pointer was made? Edi panalo UE. Wala sa ref yun, nasa players yun. May the best team win. See you guys on Sunday. Red and green alike. :)

We are the Champ! WE will prove it again! DLSU will definitely clinch another sweet title! ang galing namin! We are the supremacy in basketball! Tama si kuya Franz, it’s not how you start it, but how you end it. UE just does not have the potential of winning a basketball title even in 5 to 10 years to come. hahaha

Nakatsamba lang kayo sa Ateneo! Isa lang naman ang gagawin nyo sa Championship nyo vs. UE, guguluhin nyo laro nila, by throwing a punch or elbow to distract their game. I am sure UE will be much more prepared than DLSU! For obvious reason that all the players of UE can score, which made them a more balanced team. DLSU’s dream of a championship will just be a dream at all.

Don’t predict yet. It’s too early for you guys to say who is going to win. Hahaha!
Siempre, kaniya-kaniya na yang opinions and siraan pero don’t even say na “mahina ang isa, mahina yung isa..blah, blah” cos they won’t be able to get to the finals KUNG HINDI SILA NAGTIYAGA AT MAGAGALING :))

    peace out!

Conditioning would matter most to La Salle, they have outlasted a tired Ateneo squad that gone thru an emotional knock out with UST.

Now La Salle physical as well as emotional endurance would be tested, the archers have to fall back on their strength/advantage over UE- that is mental toughness. I believe they can match UE’s energy for most part (38min, plus some seconds), but they may run out of gas. I hope the Archers play it smart, don’t run all the time, use more bench players, fish for fouls, execute plays that have worked before, and don’t rely on playing on pure heart, use your heads more.

Two games to get the recognition of being champions.

    Animo La Salle!
