Animo Explained

After reading all your posts about the word Animo, I felt that it may be about time to get some first hand info from someone who was atually playing in the NCAA in the 1940s. You may find some links and have your opinions but still nothing beats first hand information.
Explaining what Animo meant to them in the 1940s is Mr. Eduardo “Mendy” Mendieta, the team captain of the 1947 - 48 NCAA Champion La Salle Seniors Basketball Team.

True, nobody owns the word ‘animo’. Everybody has been using ever since, it’s just that it has been made popular by the schools who use it now, San Beda and La Salle, but with a BIG DIFFERENCE (not Caloy Loyzaga “Big Difference) on what they mean by the word animo.
San Beda has been using it ever since to mean ‘have courage’ in Spanish. Animo San Beda = Have Courage San Beda!
La Salle (and Ateneo) on the other hand has been using it ever since to mean ’spirit’ in Latin. Animo La Salle = Lasallian Spirit. As it has been repeatedly used/explained on their banners with the spirit by both la salle and ateneo.

my “copyright” statement is just a sarcastic response to the people debating on who use the “Animo” first. just like I said before, that discussion is not worth arguing. and it is not important who use it first but what embodies and uplifts the morale of each community, again Understand and Respect each sides.

Whoever said anything about copyrigting? Whoever said anything about owning the word?
Whoever said anything about being the first to use it?
The point is, Lasallians identify with “animo” more strongly than do people from any other school. The word has been taken to embody almost everything La Salle. In a sense,embodying La Salle itself,hence the La Salle=Animo comments made by Animoism. It’s not just a word,as words belong to no one. It’s the recognition and association that Lasallians and non-Lasallians alike (except maybe for a few from admu or sbc) make between “animo” and La Salle through consistent and popular usage over 84 years. It’s like “eagle.” It’s just a normal word that nobody owns,and yet is immediately associated with one school. It embodies a concept and idea that is unique to ateneans that few outsiders would be able to appreciate. Same goes for “animo.” 84 years of consistent usage have branded it into the Lasallian identity and culture. Like “eagle,” it is no special word. But to a Lasallian who truly understands the personal meaning that the “animo” symbol embodies,it is so much more. Normal ateneans themselves would be surprised when they found out that ateneo used “animo” decades ago. They probably wouldn’t even know how to cheer it. Regular bedans wouldn’t really make a big deal of having the word “animo” in one of their cheers. It’s just there,not really making itself felt. I really don’t get why you people always try to push “ownership of animo” into Lasallians’ mouths. Again,the point is that “animo” holds a significance to Lasallians that is far more superior than that perceived by ateneans or bedans. We don’t care if you cheer it. We don’t care if you use it against us. What matters to us is our “animo pride” or “animo (the symbol) spirit,” the very Lasallian “animo” that no one can surpass or take away from us.

can anybody show me here a peice that says the word “copyright”. puhlease. nobody gives you the right to own something when in fact it wasn’t you who first used it. (whether here in local collegiate basketball or in any other native american country..even the one who made the latin language.). so pulhease. unless you can show me a legal thing that will prove that you have the right to own it. it’s really not a matter of who first used it. (at least for non-bedans, non-lasallian or non-ateneans)

you can claim the word “Animo” all you want, and pls do Copyright it so you can sue other group who is going to use it(Animo), for me that is an argument not worth talking or discussing about. just respect and uderstand each sides, what is important is how the word characterize each community(La Salle, San Beda and other Univ/Col), and how it uplifts the morale of that community. and Btw, thanks for a research, nagabala ka pa.

Na-gets ko na ang sinabi ng gumawa ng Animoism shirts. They said they used the word “animo” because they couldn’t use “La Salle”. They chose “animo” becuase Lasallians see the word as a SYMBOL of their being Lasallians. They don’t take it to literaly mean anything in English or any other language. They simply use the word because they can IDENTIFY with it. ‘Yan ang wala ang Ateneo at San Beda,an identity that truly and rightfully proclaims “ANIMO!” That’s what people mean when they say ANIMO=LA SALLE. Animo IS La Salle,and La Salle IS animo.

Again,for Pete’s sake,THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS “PROPER USAGE” OF THE WORD “ANIMO” IN ENGLISH. It is not an English word,so don’t try to give it an English meaning. It is the same with hundreds of Filipino or Tagalog words that don’t have direct translations into English because THESE WORDS EMBODY CONCEPTS AND IDEAS UNIQUE TO ONE LANGUAGE. So please,unless we’re speaking straight Spanish here,I don’t think anyone has any right to dictate how the word “animo” is used in our immediate society. So,in essence,”PUSH THE LIMIT,ANIMO SPIRIT” is neither wrong nor right. But since we commonly identify “animo” as referring to La Salle,it can be taken that the word is used in those shirts just as any trademark or emblem that represents La Salle. Lasallians do not give “animo” any definite meaning,they just IDENTIFY with it.

This issue just exposes how ignorant some people are. “Animo” meaning “spirit” is from Latin. We come from Spanish influences,and “Animo” may be taken to mean “courage” in Spanish.
Remember,Latin is a dead language. The “Animo” we use is derived from Spanish,a current and relevant romance language.
So,if effect,”ANIMO SPIRIT” essentially means “SPIRIT OF COURAGE.” I don’t see any redundancy there. So please,”PUSH THE LIMIT,ANIMO SPIRIT” all you want!
Besides,the Spanish language and culture features certain nuances and traits that have not successfully been transplanted to our Filipino/American consciousness.
Therefore,unless we are speaking in straight Spanish,trying to put “animo” into context in our everyday conversation is useless.
Let’s leave the word confined to the Spanish cheers of “Animo, La Salle!”

San Beda may vaguely claim the rain chant or indian yell on the basis of its being more related to their native american theme. Having said that,they don’t have any basis for claiming that they were the first to use it since it only became popular though Woodstock. La Salle may have used it first,with no need to justify the indian-ness of it. In any case,San Beda couldn’t possibly have used it earlier (say,the time ANIMO came into prominence) because the concept of NATIVE AMERICANS was introduced by the AMERICANS. The Spanish-mestizo roots of san beda don’t support the idea of native americans.

please don’t dwell on San Beda vs. UE (or San Beda vs. La Salle because there is no such thing as far as i know not until Animo issues went out). In the end it will always be about the history, culture and how true and consistent we are in our traditions, so just keep the spirit alive and have a happy holidays. :D

UE’s being red and white began just recently. They used to be blue and white as well.
I think idol ng UE ang San Beda that’s why they chose red and white and the warrior monicker - similar to San Beda’s Indian Icon.hehehe! And now, seems like purebloodedwarrior wants to use Animo in their cheers. haha!
No prob with me, I’ve got nothing against UEnians. ;)
