Animo Explained

by Tony L. Atayde

After reading all your posts about the word Animo, I felt that it may be about time to get some first hand info from someone who was atually playing in the NCAA in the 1940s. You may find some links and have your opinions but still nothing beats first hand information.

Explaining what Animo meant to them in the 1940s is Mr. Eduardo “Mendy” Mendieta, the team captain of the 1947 - 48 NCAA Champion La Salle Seniors Basketball Team.

It is the younger DLSU generation who are bent on “La Salle, La Salle” by the way they define the word. Animo Ateneo means “Ateneo spirit” by the the way they define the word. Animo San Beda means “take courage, San Beda” by the way they define the word…

I should hope that you are not thinking that I am either a Bedan or an Atenean. That would be only half-true. I also am a La Sallian. I am both red and green. However, there was no confusion on the definition of “animo” during our time and here, I agree with Mr. Atayde’s view.

The confusion came in only when the phrase “Push the Limit, Animo Spirit” came out long after I graduated. At first I thought “animo spirit” to mean “courageous spirit” which is still within the original Spanish definition.

But the younger green crowd seem to have their own ideas. If such is the case, then so be it.

@bystander: So La Salle, La Salle still sounds a whole lot better than ANIMO ATENEO, or ANIMO SAN BEDA…

    Gets?

    Haha.
    Deny, deny,deny.
    You’re all good at it.
    SBC-ADMU Dream Matchp? HaHa!
    Dream on.

I won’t be surprised kung mali-mali ang tawag ng mga refs sa USt-ADMU match.. siyempre, pabor sa ADMU ang tawag. SIguro galit na galit na ang MVP niyo… nasilat ang SBC, now naman ADMU.

    Mga dreamers, WAKE UP!
Mga bedista, aminin niyo na gaya-gaya din kayo sa mga Native American Indians… Original ba kamo? HAHA.

Face it, ANIMO is associated with DE LA SALLE!!!!

If Animo means La Salle, then that means that when the younger generation La Sallites say “Animo La Salle!” they are in fact saying “La Salle, La Salle”? Somehow, that doesn’t sound right to me. Hmmm….

Can we not live in peace? Have our respective Christian Schools failed us all? The Jesuits, Christian Brothers, Benedictines and Dominicans?

I request inboundpass.com to take a more resposive role in the promotion of sportsmanship and friendship especially among CATHOLIC SCHOOLS.

To Bedans and posers alike, there is nothing to be gained from hatred.

animorah, Live Jesus In our Hearts?

Grrrr, For the Greater Glory of God?

Bedans, That In All Things God May be Glorified?

It’s almost Christmas. This is just basketball. This is just about the meaning of “ANIMO”. Let’s live in peace.

    Pax!

Whose dreaming about an old rivalry?

    WE don’t. That’s old news.

We are actually in good terms with Ateneans. Letranites, UP, Thomasians, Mapuans, UE, FEU La Sallians and the rest.

    Check us out in gameface.ph.

animorah, join us in a more sensible discussion.

Not exactly fight. This site explains it all:

    http://animosanbeda.wordpress.com/

The deleted video clip posted in this article by Mr. Atayde can be seen here.

    What does Animo mean?

In a declarative frm, it means “spirit”.
When used to cheer, it measn “take courage”. That’s the Bedan position.

animorah, William Tell is a Swiss folk hero.
Why did you copy San Beda’s Hippie-Indian chanting?

Rivalry with Ateneo basketball? That’s a dead issue.

Again, explain animo, animorah. Let me help you:

we bedans know how to respectably accept defeat…truly ust was the better team that game..hats off..congratulations, tigers..

i am proud of our very own red lions..they fought bravely and with pride eventhough it was clear that they were missing the services of yousif aljamal who has recently departed for the the pro league…i am certain though that the remaining big men will step up and make the necessary adjustments in due time for the next ncaa season, hopefully earlier..around summer next year so that the red lions would be able to show their deadly form in the other side leagues…hehehe…

as to Grrr! and animorah, bobo at wala kayong kakuwenta-kuwentang tao..stupid kids talaga oo…hehehe…ang bababa talaga ng level ng character at pag-iisip nyo…you kids are garbage..hintayin nyo trak ng basura para ma-pick up na kayo..ang aantot nyo…hehehe…IF STUPIDITY AND BASENESS WERE BRICKS, animorah and Grrr! WOULD BE HOUSING PROJECTS!!! hehehe….go to school kids para mag-improve kayo…hehehe….

    red pride!
    animo san beda!

    go san beda fight!

Perhaps reminiscing in the past is the only claim to glory for some of these people. Grow up, move on, a rivalry with ADMU is no big deal, unless you’re no big deal yourself.

    Grow up, guys.
Stop dreaming about the old-rivalry you had with ADMU.
Past is past, we all have to move on…
    Wake up!

    OK?

The article by Tony Atayde is about the meaning of Animo, animorah.

Please watch the clip by an elder La Sallite and correct the errors of your generation.

Read this also to be enlightened about our tradition.

    http://animosanbeda.wordpress.com/

    Thanks.

And please do not drag the name of La Salle in your posts. You might not even be a real La Salista.

    P.S.

    Congrats UST!

@Sioux — I may be young but I’m old enough to differentiate CRAP from SCHOOL PRIDE.
It seems SBC and ADMU has an altogether different view and meaning of SCHOOL PRIDE.

Kung sabagay, may common denominator kayo — MVP.
    No wonder.

    ANIMO IS LA SALLE!
Congrats to UST for defeating SBC Red Lions.
Oh ano, akala niyo kayo ang DA BEST?
Ikot ang pwet niyo sa galit… hindi nakaganti sa DLSU at UE, tinalo pa ULIT ng UST.

Truly, UAAP is THE BETTER LEAGUE.

Animo explained? It appears that the young La Sallians are really clueless.

Instead of accepting the error in their current understanding of “Animo” , many even tried to rationalize that the meaning was already changed by La Salle.

Better listen to an old La Sallian who was interviewed by Mr. Atayde.

Sarap Maging Bedista is an early 90s spoof of San Miguel Beer.

Does it matter that we already have that line since the early 90s? Nope. It’s OK if La Salle has a similar one created in the early 2000.

Bata ka pa nga , animorah.

    animorah,

Our Native American Inspiration came from the Scouting Movement.

The native Americans are icons of bravery, of courage. Just like our red lion symbol,it is a christian symbol for courage. In fact the family of St. Benedict took the lion as their emblem.

Red is the color of courage. The Bedan Hymn speaks not of glory but of courage. “Animo San Beda” means “Take Courage San Beda”.

    That consistency.

Now if you look at La Salle, William Tell has nothing to do with the Christian Brothers. Why are you doing an Indian Chant?

Tony Atayde said that the Wahooo is not Indian. It is just a Hippie Chant. Apparently Tony is no Hippie.

What is a Hippie? It takes a real hippie to know one. Here’s Carlos Santana:

“I bring practical spirituality together with the rebel from the street, because I still live the principles of the sixties. I’m still a hippie. We were rainbow warriors, reincarnated Native American Indians who wanted a different dimension of existence.”

    http://www.wie.org/j28/santana.asp

Bedans are consistent with their sybolisms and chantings. Even the Indian chanting by Hippies is conistent with San Beda’s tradtition.

    How about La Salle?

    Read and learn:

^ well actually the “ang sarap maging atenista” banner was adapted from La Salle’s “Sarap maging Berde” banner from the alumni homecoming (i forgot what batch) in 2004/03. But ok lang for us Lasallians. :)

baka sa susunod may gagaya na din ng “win or lose it’s the school we choose” or something like one big fight…hehehehehe…..regarding sa chants. I don’t have any idea about who started it and who discovered it….

pero sa banners, maraming nanggagaya like the “sarap maging atenista”=”sarap maging taga-UE”..hehehe….but ateneans ddon’t hate UE for doing that….IT”S JUST A BANNER CHEER…I dunno if that goes the same for the yell
