Either Bad Calls or No-Calls

In the past few weeks, I have been watching almost all the games of the UAAP. Aside from the many issues that I have posted in the past, I am quite alarmed at the terrible officiating that the UAAP is experiencing.

Before anything else, let me just make it clear that I do not believe that the bad officiating is directed against any one team. It is actually present in many of the games involving all the teams.

At one time or another, all the coaches have been warned of their outbursts caused by terrible calls by the referees. I honestly feel that it is an issue of incompetence that is plaguing the referees of the UAAP.

In yesterday’s UE-Ateneo game alone, there were many calls as well as non-calls that were questionable on both sides. In fact there were 2 identical incidents where each team had a fast break and the defensive player accidentally tripped the offensive player and the ball going out of bounds. Both times, the call was travelling against the offensive player.

I remember in the first round game of UST-La Salle, Pido Jarencio was furious at the referees and he had every reason to be. In their 2nd round match, the refs were again horrendous but this time against both teams. Both Pido and Franz could be seen looking in disbelief as the refs were fumbling one call after another.

My question is, doesn’t the UAAP Commissioner see what is very obvious? Again, I reiterate that I am not saying that the referees are favoring or going against specific teams. They are just not up to the standards that are needed to officiate UAAP games. Though they cannot be 100% accurate in their calls, they however have to be competent enough to call the game as it should be.

I also believe that all the coaches should unite in demanding for better officiating. It is unfair to the coaches and to their players to have all the hard work and long hours that they put in practice to be negated by bad officiating.

The UAAP Commissioner and his technical committee have to evaluate every referee after every game and sanctions should be given to those who do not do their jobs. It is only fair that the third party on the court needs to be as closely watched as the two teams playing. The referees officiate the games; the technical committee has to oversee the officiating.

Oo nga. Tanggapin nalang kung sino ang nananalo. Hindi yung gusto niyo lang manalo yung team niyo, siyempre MAS gusto namin.
Tama na ang siraan. Wala kayong makakamit diyan.

    Anyway, 9-0 na!

    Congrats to the team!
Good job din sa UST kanina,
    Maganda ang laban.

    RESPECT!

Now if you guys want to question my points then go right ahead but please do not question my motives.

I was at the games today with my colleagues on this site, Mike Abasolo and Josef Ramos. What we all saw was officiatiing at its worst.

What happened in the game against FEU was an almost deja vu. We are ahead by 15 and suddenly it became 6. What’s the problem here… It looks like no one rises up as the leader here or just a matter of complacency happening… It’s not the fault of the coach here.. It’s the players… No one’s taking charge… Where’s Rico this past few weeks? TY is slumping… Bader is having too many ill advised shots… It seems like we are getting beaten also with the trap that we are executing. FEU used it against us in stretches and it was effective… It’s like we are getting a dose of our own medicine….

Up next for DLSU is UP and Adamson.. Must win for DLSU because if the team wins, we are at least guaranteed of a tie in the final four with 8 wins…

Likewise, if La Salle wins, they will have their morale boosted before facing arch rival ADMU (i believe la salle will beat ADMU in the rematch)…

    ANIMO La Salle!!!!

I think UE will have a loss before 2nd round ends.. I think it would be against La Salle.

We believe in our team. Pero kapag natalo nga DLSU.. it’s OK. Napakita na ng Warriors kung sino sila.

UE is a tough team to beat but I hope La Salle win this time. Let us see. I think when they meet again, it will be a very exciting event.

    Question,

If the officiating is so bad, why is it that it is only rampant in the UAAP but not in the NCAA? Aren’t They are using the same set of referees?

Also, the commisioner’s job is not that simple. What do you want him to do? Suspend all referees without investigation? Would you guys do a better job? Cut the guy some slack.

i think what is being pointed out is the officiating within the UAAP. what is going on in the NCAA is not a concern at the moment. that is a separate topic.

the commissioner should do what he is supposed to do to correct the situation. nobody is saying he should outrightly suspend all referees.

and why pass the buck to us? we’re not the commissioner.

“cut the guy some slack”… sure. there are still plenty of games to go and at least he makes sure things go well this time.

    GenoM,
It is the person but the position of Commissioner that is being questioned. The fatc that the Commissioner is replaced every year and that he is not independent of the board, makes the position very shaky. What is being suggested is for the Commissioner to be given the powers needed to starighten out the many things plaguing the UAAP.

Remember the recent referee scandal in the NBA. Commish David Stern’s reputation is under scrutiny for not “listening” to the player’s complaints on outrageous calls and instead increased the penalty on such. He did a good job as NBA commissioner but for this incident his job is now in jeopardy.

In the UAAP, Cordero will only be commissioner this year. He is independent of the board. That’s why he has the power to investigate any wrongdoings without any permission from the board. If properly done, and proof shown, the board only hands in the verdict. His main job is to see to it that the UAAP rules and regulations are followed. That is not the board’s job.

    some corrections:
the commissioner is independent from the board in a certain way. it is not absolute.
the board has the final say and may overrule the commissioner. but the commissioner has enough powers to start the ball rolling.

    cheers!

    Stewie,

How can there be objectivity from the Commissioner when his position is co-terminus with the host. The Commissioner should be independent of the board. The model of the PBA is what the UAAP should be looking into. Right now, the Commissioner’s main task is running the day to day activities of the league.

    Green Mind,

You’re correct and that’s what I was really driving at. Not only should the UAAP Commissioner runs the day-to-day activities of the league, but his actions should not really be subservient to the board.

But still (at least for me), even if his term is only for this year, the host UST and the commissioner should not only exercise fairness but also prudence.

Very Opinionated. Very Green. Hate him. Love Him. It does not matter and he does not care. A Howard Stern in cyberspace.
