University of the East, like there previous 1st round encounter, took a while than usual to enjoy a 73-68 victory over the Ateneo Blue Eagles and claim its 8th win in eight games in the continuation of the UAAP season 70 at the Araneta Coliseum last August 12.
The Red Warriors are still on top of the standings with an 8-0 record, enjoying a three-game advantage over FEU and La Salle.
Four red shirts had double digit markers. Mark Borboran topped the tally sheet with 16 points while Elmer Espiritu listed 15 points including three 3-pointers. Paul Lee and Marcy Arellano bagged 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Ford Arao and Chris Tiu made a combined 25 points to lead the Blue Eagles scoreboard.
The Red Warriors, which enjoyed more than 15-point leads in its previous games went under obscurity but still managed to find composure down the stretch.
“We had difficulty inside the post. They had big men who were really tall and had wide bodies,” noted Coach Dindo Pumaren after the game.
Ateneo made two three-pointers at the start of the first period. But the Blue Eagles could not sustain the lead as the first quarter ended 18-14 in favor of UE.
However in the second quarter, things started to heat up for the blue shirts as Ateneo ignited a 15-0 run and establish a 9-point lead, 29-20, with 4:48 minutes to play.
Elmer Espiritu’s hot hands converted three three-point baskets to cut the lead to three. The first half ended with the Warriors trailing behind Ateneo, 38-35.
In the third quarter, Ateneo’s big men took charge of the game. Arao, Siverino Baclao, Rabeth Al-Husaini and Ken Barracoso led the scoring for the Eagles.
UE still led with 57.3 seconds left to play until Jai Reyes and Tiu made back to back 18-footers to give Ateneo back the lead, 59-55.
In the fourth quarter, the Red Warriors sparked a vital 6-0 run with 8:10 minutes that gave UE a four-point lead, 65-61. Ford Arao failed to complete a three-point play but his Field Goal still tallied a 69-66 UE lead. Both teams looked for baskets in the final four minutes but could not find any until Marcy Arellano converted on a jumper with only 1:06 left to play in regulation.
Paul Lee fouled Tiu from the three point arc but the Ateneo Combo Guard could only nail 2 of 3 baskets from the stripe. Lee’s 2/2 FTs sealed the win for the Red Warriors.
Coach Dindo Pumaren is proud of his players and added, “We cannot win in scoring against other teams. We are no. 1 in offense because of our defense”.

Why some of you questioning the Eligibility. Is it because your team loses to UE. It’s our moment to shine in UAAP Mens Basketball. UEan is not a cheater. We win because of our hardwork. Unlike other school there. Famous but cheaters. :D peace..

I agree with Green Mind and Mike. Eligibility would not be the issue anymore in Duncil’s case. It would be his and UST’s credibility. Having 2 birth certificates would now cast doubts on their honesty unless the school actively pursues this in finding out the truth. UST should not leave it up to Duncil alone even if he is not with the school anymore.
Whatever the outcome, UST will still keep their last year’s trophy. But they have to do something to remove any doubts and save their reputation. If nobody brought out the 1982 birth certificate, UST was still bent on fielding Duncil in their line-up in this year’s UAAP games. Sorry na lang, may nag-buking sa kanila.

The eligibility is not the issue. He is eligible fine. But when you have 2 birth certificates don’t you think it is worth looking into?

If it is proven that Duncil submitted fabricated documents then no matter how old he was would not be the issue. It would be the validity of the documents submitted.

UST is not making a big fuss about it because if they do then their championship last year could be revoked. Ateneo is not making a big fuss either cos they have somethings to hide like the Kirk Long issue of having incomplete documents. Thats how they are. UST is not raising the Borboran issue because then UE might raise the falsification of public documents issue of Duncil. FEU is not raiing the issue because of the alleged gambling that got a player sacked.
Eksakto!

Dont mind me
but Duncil was eligible last year, right?
that is whether he was born on ‘82 or on ‘83.
And if UST were to be sanctioned, it would have to be this year, since Duncil was on the line up.

hey guys, all of your comments are very interesting, i think uaap board should check once and for all the issue of Borboran and two other alleged over age players, to ensure equity, justice, fairness amongst all uaap squads. i really think uaap board should issue a statement about this.

I hate it na walang games today dahil kay egay kaya eto nagpopost na lang ako ng comments. Regarding this 8-0 run by UE, sa tingin ko e they would really end the season as no.1 with a twice to beat advantage but i think they will have a hard time beating UST and La Salle for them to sweep the 2 rounds. Besides, UE is having a hard time on teams with big players such as Ateneo, NU and UST. If the games would push through for tommorow it would be an interesting team standing after the games as UST will battle UE while DLSU and FEU are tied with 5-3.

green mind, it looks like almost all of the schools are guilty of something and they all choose to just keep silent. not a good sign.
at least la salle was decent enough to publicly confess their wrongdoing and accept the consequence. (even this noble act did not escape some bashing from its critics, who are now also riddled with controversies. tables turned.)
still, we hope that everybody would come out in the open and start cleaning up the dirt.

Blue Ice,
Word has it that Kirk Long’s student visa was not yet released as of the middle of the first round. The question is how was he able to enroll at Ateneo if he did not have a student visa. This also happened to a baseball player of Ateneo last year.

The Dont Mind: so sino yung 25 yr old ng Ateneo? Sabihin mo na. Kaso mukhang nanghuhula ka eh. Indeed ha? Baka si Arao…mukhang 25 y.o. lang yun! Pero deretso yun galing San Beda.
Green Mind: Sir, with all due respect, what incomplete documents issues about Kirk Long are you talking about? I haven’t heard or read anything about that in the news or in basketball circles. The boy has been here for quite a while now, hanggang ngayon ba kulang pa din documents niya? o baka kuwentong barbero din lang yan?

THE DON’T MIND… oh cmon! I mind you this time! LOL! name them!!! wooo…. from Black Gold to Red to Blue then don’t tell me… uh! I don’t know till when and how will this get resolved (which seems they don’t mind).. I was thinking though, if Duncil’s playing ineligibility became an issue to everyone then why did just UST (granted that they’re also aware of “overage” issues with other players of other teams..) let other teams then still fielding in these ineligible players?? I DON’T REALLY UNDERSTAND!!! Knowing also for a fact that they are the defending champions supposedly protecting their crown and definitely Duncil, being the finals Mvp will be a big help to the Tigers. IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE UST seems just allowing others to continuously do it! As this season’s host, don’t they have much authority to raise the issue or maybe they are also guilty of these unacceptable practices in the league?? I must know also.. It’s sad to think also that nowadays we are
much into competition, winning more than winning it clean.. I have nothing against UST as I am a thomasian too but we just do not promote Cheating…..!!

Don mind me
but indeed two other teams are fielding 25 year olds.
one’s blue. the other’s, uh, secret. the second one’s birth year is kinda blurry, IMHO. have to dig deeper and find out if the second one’s true.
but Ateneo is indeed fielding a 25 year old.

Leigh,
Your statement “Hindi talaga maiiwasan to. Kailangan ng ipaalam sa UAAP Board” is inaccurate because, it can avoided and also the UAAP Board knows about these things. They knew Duncil had 2 birth certificates. They should know about Borboran because his bio is splattered on the Nike Symmer League website. They just choose to look the other way.

Tama, tama yung sinabi mo Mr. Stewie and yellow_we. Mas maagang maagapan, mas maganda. Naintindihan ko yung point niyo, and I agree with that. Tiga-UE ako, at syempre I want my team to win, pero I also want peace and order in the league para ng wala ng sisihan sa huli. At para malinis ang lahat-lahat.
“I just heard today that Borboran is not the only one. Two other teams also have overage players.”
Hmmm. Hindi talaga maiiwasan to. Kailangan ng ipaalam sa UAAP Board.

See, The Green Mind. The UAAP Board is incompetent.
The UAAP Board is not in a position to correct itself. The Board that represents the UAAP is the problem.

in essence, what we ALL want here is fairness. whether a school is currently fielding a good team or a bad team skillwise, fairness should be the name of the day and the UAAP Board should be the first one to espouse that because it has the power to do so.
i have not attacked anyone’s comments in this thread. so i apologize if it seemed to be that way. everyone is entitled to his opinion. my posts were mainly targeted towards the UAAP Board’s inertia but i am still hoping that this will change for the better.
peace to all!

The fact that the UAAP Board accepts xeroxed copy of birth certificates is totally absurd. Why cant they get NSO Birth certificates. If thats what they did than all these suspicions will go away. I just heard today that Borboran is not the only one. Two other teams also have overage players.

I guess the main point here.. What’s the essence of this tournament if teams do not practice fairness of the game?! I’m not saying UE is guilty of this but as everyone is saying this seems to be the practice by most of the teams in the league which is obviously unacceptable! I think just to set this “rumor” close, UAAP board then have to investigate as early as now. Wag na nating paabutin pa ang off-season and kung sakaling UE ang magchampion bawiin lang sa kanila ang trophy just because of fielding in an ineligible player like what happened to la salle last year. If no one will speak up and address this issue it is just other way of saying that we support their nasty activities. What is the essence of playing for pride for your school when you are actually cheating?? Again, I’m not against Borboran nor UE. My only advocacy is justice for everyone. Play under the rules of the tournament!!
“UE has a good team this year”
