University of the East, like there previous 1st round encounter, took a while than usual to enjoy a 73-68 victory over the Ateneo Blue Eagles and claim its 8th win in eight games in the continuation of the UAAP season 70 at the Araneta Coliseum last August 12.

The Red Warriors are still on top of the standings with an 8-0 record, enjoying a three-game advantage over FEU and La Salle.

Four red shirts had double digit markers. Mark Borboran topped the tally sheet with 16 points while Elmer Espiritu listed 15 points including three 3-pointers. Paul Lee and Marcy Arellano bagged 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Ford Arao and Chris Tiu made a combined 25 points to lead the Blue Eagles scoreboard.

The Red Warriors, which enjoyed more than 15-point leads in its previous games went under obscurity but still managed to find composure down the stretch.

“We had difficulty inside the post. They had big men who were really tall and had wide bodies,” noted Coach Dindo Pumaren after the game.

Ateneo made two three-pointers at the start of the first period. But the Blue Eagles could not sustain the lead as the first quarter ended 18-14 in favor of UE.

However in the second quarter, things started to heat up for the blue shirts as Ateneo ignited a 15-0 run and establish a 9-point lead, 29-20, with 4:48 minutes to play.

Elmer Espiritu’s hot hands converted three three-point baskets to cut the lead to three. The first half ended with the Warriors trailing behind Ateneo, 38-35.

In the third quarter, Ateneo’s big men took charge of the game. Arao, Siverino Baclao, Rabeth Al-Husaini and Ken Barracoso led the scoring for the Eagles.

UE still led with 57.3 seconds left to play until Jai Reyes and Tiu made back to back 18-footers to give Ateneo back the lead, 59-55.

In the fourth quarter, the Red Warriors sparked a vital 6-0 run with 8:10 minutes that gave UE a four-point lead, 65-61. Ford Arao failed to complete a three-point play but his Field Goal still tallied a 69-66 UE lead. Both teams looked for baskets in the final four minutes but could not find any until Marcy Arellano converted on a jumper with only 1:06 left to play in regulation.

Paul Lee fouled Tiu from the three point arc but the Ateneo Combo Guard could only nail 2 of 3 baskets from the stripe. Lee’s 2/2 FTs sealed the win for the Red Warriors.

Coach Dindo Pumaren is proud of his players and added, “We cannot win in scoring against other teams. We are no. 1 in offense because of our defense”.

Exactly my point. Kung pwede lang na isa-isahin ang mga players, Para wala ng mga issue.. Pero I guess, hindi talaga mawawala yung mga bagay na yun. Part na talaga siya.

Hmm I’m not arguing with you ok, steady ka lang. Hindi nakukuha yan sa away, I’m just stating my view on this.

    My reply on this:

[And “UE is not a ONE-MAN team.”

Kaya sabi ko, “UE has a good team this year and it’s a team that does not rely on just one player.”]

Im not saying that you’re wrong hir. Hehe.
But thanks sa pagcleaclear. I understand.

    Peace!

Leigh, are you saying UAAP is keeping quiet on Borboran because it is done by all teams? Submitting false documents is cheating…so all schools are cheating. And the UAAP board is also a cheat because they condone it, based on what you are insinuating.

Done by all teams!!??? Eh di dapat mas lalong mag-act na ang UAAP management if they want to save the league. Ipa submit na nila lahat ng authentic birth certificates ng mga players. It’s that simple.

And “UE is not a ONE-MAN team.”

Kaya sabi ko, “UE has a good team this year and it’s a team that does not rely on just one player.”

UE is not a ONE-MAN team. Before, oo.
    Kay Bon-Bon Custudio.
But present is different from the past.

Hmm.. Regarding about sa topic kay Mark Borboran: Yes, UAAP Board is keeping quiet amongst all controversies that is being done by all teams. Lumalabas kapag masyadong napapag-usapan.

Let UE play its games and win them. Let them go to the finals and win it as well.
Oops! Borboran is not anymore qualified to play this year. Kindly please return the championship trophy.

I think neither UE or any other school in the UAAP would want this to happen. The UAAP board should have this resolved ASAP to remove doubts on Borboran’s eligibility. UE has a good team this year and it’s a team that does not rely on just one player.

    Animo!

The UAAP is now ruled by a mafia.

Until when are we going to turn a blind eye?

It is high time for like minded schools to plan th next move.

There is a common practice among the UAAP Board. You scratch my back and Ill scratch yours. In Duncil’s case it’s a tale of 2 birth certificates. If Borboran were 25 yrs old then no body will complain because its UE.

But if ever there is a hint of suspicion that La Salle had an overage player, all the schools will scream to high heavens. Remember 2 years ago when there were reports that Cardona was ineligible? The UAAP Board immediately investigated that. They know Borboran is overage and everyone would have kept quiet about Duncil if the media did not expose it.

That’s the UAAP board for you. Nobody even knows who owns the league or who owns the UAAP brand. There are a lot of anomalies there that someone will uncover one day.

Never be overconfident, never be complacent, never lose hope, never lose heart when defeat comes, never stop trying… that’s UE! Fight like a Warrior!

how true it is that borboran is 25 yrs old? why didn’t the uaap officials find out and penalize ue? if it’s true, then why is he still playing? why don’t other uaap schools make an official complain? i know where this rumor come from.

Yes. I believe in what you have said na no team is unbeaten and no team is consistent. It just so happens that the team is very good this season. Well, every team has a chance to shine, maybe their time is NOW. And i’m sorry to Mr. John De las Alas..

“mas masarap pala maging taga UE?
sige, hintayin mo na maghanap ka ng trabaho…”

    Man, this is very wrong.
I am from UE and I am working now at one of the biggest and well-known company here in our country.

    Respect.

all I can say the season has not ended yet.. 2nd round is just getting started and there are still yet surprising actions that are about to happen.. UST’s game against DLSU last saturday is an example.. who would have thought UST was still able to catch that dozen lead in around a minute or so left in the last quarter and then they even won over the archers in overtime with 9 points I guess. I mean, the point here is.. the ball is round!! you win some, you lose some! For now, yes.. accept.. UE is #1 in the league.. but how about the issue that Mark Borboran is already 25 yrs old and yet still playing in the league (Duncil’s case also) which I just learned a while ago in other forum.. Which is also I think should be given a proper notice talking about “FAIRNESS” and “CREDIBILITY” of the league and even UE itself.. I’m not against UE as they are actually playing good so far as stats can explain that as well but this issue should not set aside either… I guess this is worth looking at RIGHT NOW than after the end of the season which will be again a very awkward action. We don’t want another team be disqualified or suspended for an another season.. I don’t know.. but the Truth shall come up before its too late!! ..peace!

No team is consistent, no team is unbeatable. Sometimes the weaker team beats the stronger team, it always happen in any basketball game.

Maybe its about time UE wins a championship. It has been more than 20 years since they last became champions. It’s good for the league to have equity among its members.

UE needed the type of game provided by Ateneo to avoid any complacency on their current position. Before the match w/ the Eagles, they blew out their opposition by an average of 20+ points! These guys are playing their hearts out & they deserved every victory they have earned so far! I just wished no more Jek Chia-like chambas happen again!

UE has not yet achieved anything, they still have a lot to prove if they could make it to the finals. To UE, be prepared to face very tough challenges from the other teams. Especially, things might be different in the final 4 playoffs. So far, UE is the best team!

There are many rumors that this team is fielding a 25-year-old player even before, but it still can be proven.

First: No complainant and second: no hard evidences…

    Very, very clean… Or clever?

UE was lucky to win yesterday against Ateneo. They wont have it as easy as they did in the first round. Remember Ateneo had 7 game winning streaks in the last 3 years and never won a championship. Remember La Salle went 13-0 befor losing to Ateneo in the final game of the season and also lost in the championship. Remember, UE choked against UST last year, not once but twice. Remember this is the UAAP where stranger things have happened.
